SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Ocean Beach are coming together to help raise money for the owner of ACE surfboards whose workshop went up in flames Tuesday afternoon. Albert Elliott's hand-shaped creations were well known in the San Diego area and news of the fire spread quickly. He believes the fire started after the battery on his electric bike ignited. Elliott says much of what was inside was one of a kind and irreplaceable. Although he did have insurance, he isn't sure what it will cover. A Gofundme account has been started to help Elliott and his wife try to rebuild. There is also a clean up at the Elliott's home set for Saturday August 10 at 11 a.m. 674

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect they say choked a clerk before robbing a Mira Mesa 7-Eleven.The robbery happened around 2:10 a.m. Tuesday on the 11000 block of Camino Ruiz near Sandburg Elementary School.Police say the suspect walked into the store and asked the clerk for cigarettes. When the clerk went to get the cigarettes, the suspect choked the clerk unconscious from behind.When the man regained consciousness, he discovered that the suspect stole money and cigarettes from the convenience store.The clerk was uninjured during the robbery.  588

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police agencies throughout San Diego County are investigating multiple brewery break-ins, all within the last week. Employees at Serpentine Cider say they were hit last Friday morning. Their surveillance cameras captured a man walking up to their business, moving a planter and then smashing a window to get inside. The person got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. Just two miles away, Longship Brewery says they were hit that very same morning. The suspect, also broke a window and crawled inside, getting away with an empty cash drawer. In Vista, Barrel Harbor Brewing confirms with 10News someone also broke into their place the same exact way. They reported the crime to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. On social media, a fourth brewery, Black Plague, posted pictures of a break-in at their business on Instagram. Oceanside Police is investigating that incident. So far, police haven't confirmed if the incidents are related or released a description of who they're looking for. 1029

One fact is clear: those countries that have managed to safely reopen schools have done so with declining infection rates and on-demand testing available. California has neither. The skyrocketing infection rates of the past few weeks make it clear the pandemic is not under control," the district said.SDUSD's 2020-2021 school year will start as scheduled on Aug. 31, officials said Monday. "That assessment will be based on local measures of whether the virus is sufficiently under control, as well as progress on testing and federal action on funding," the district said.The district will be announcing more information about its online learning program on Aug. 10. The district had previously offered families an option of in-person or online distance learning.Monday's announcement comes as President Donald Trump continues to put pressure on states to open school campuses. Last week, Trump threatened to withhold federal money if schools don’t reopen in the fall.The district has said it has enough state funding to operate for the first half of the year but will rely on federal funding for the spring semester. Instruction will resume on Aug.18 in Los Angeles Unified and Aug. 31 in San Diego Unified, as previously scheduled. Both districts will continue planning for a return to in-person learning during the 2020-21 academic year, as soon as public health conditions allow.This announcement represents a significant disappointment for the many thousands of teachers, administrators and support staff, who were looking forward to welcoming students back in August. It is obviously an even greater disappointment to the many parents who are anxious for their students to resume their education. Most of all, this decision will impact our students in ways that researchers will take years to understand.Our leaders owe it to all of those impacted by the COVID-19 closures to increase the pace of their work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- North County leaders, including city mayors and Supervisor Jim Desmond, joined Legoland officials Friday morning in a press conference demanding answers from the state as to when and how they can reopen.They said a letter was sent last week to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting that the state implement protocols to abide by to reopen, similar to what they established with schools.Legoland's park is mainly outdoors and has been closed since March. Their hotel opened in July and hotel guests can access the main promenade but the park wants to open its doors to the public. The park's president, Kurt Stocks, said Legoland has implemented safety guidelines for the attraction to operate outdoors with sanitizer stations, distance markers and temperature checks upon entering. Stocks said he and city leaders believe the state needs to implement guidelines for all businesses across San Diego county, indoor and outdoor, so employees who were furloughed or laid off can get back to work. At Friday's press conference, leaders also stated they constantly receive calls from residents with questions as to when they can open their businesses back up and hope to provide them with answers sooner than later. "We've heard very little and I recognize the state has to make decisions for businesses across California. but what we're doing today is calling on the state to recognize that San Diego attractions are safe to open." 1445
