At the Denver Public Library, story time is one of the most popular programs. They're interacting with me, they're responding to questions, they're rhyming,” says children’s librarian Warren Shanks. But in the age of social media, a principal in Texas is offering children a more modern option: a digital version of story time. Principal Dr. Belinda George hosts the story hour called "Tucked in Tuesday" on Facebook Live. “You can't just stay stagnant. You'll lose the kids,” Dr. George says. “You got to meet them where they are.” The principal says she got the idea before Christmas break. “I knew I would miss my scholars,” she says. So, she decided to read them a story, while in her pajamas, from her living room. She decided to keep reading, with the goal of bridging the gap between home and school.What started with 35 students from her Texas elementary school, has grown to hundreds of kids and parents around the world. The response has been overwhelming. “In my head, I'm doing something that I love and I’m doing something for kids, and so the attention that I’m getting is kind of like I don't know the big deal yet,” Dr. George says. Now, authors are sending in books for her to read, and some are even joining her during story time. A 72-year old woman was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on Thursday, June 25.A news release from park officials says the tourist approached within 10 feet of a bison several times to take its photo, and the bison gored her. It happened Thursday evening at the woman's campsite at Bridge Bay Campground.Rangers provided immediate medical care to the woman who sustained numerous goring wounds. She was then flown via helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.“The series of events that led to the goring suggest the bison was threatened by being repeatedly approached to within 10 feet,” said Yellowstone’s senior bison biologist, Chris Geremia. “Bison are wild animals that respond to threats by displaying aggressive behaviors like pawing the ground, snorting, bobbing their head, bellowing, and raising their tail. If that doesn’t make the threat (in this instance it was a person) move away, a threatened bison may charge. To be safe around bison, stay at least 25 yards away, move away if they approach, and run away or find cover if they charge.”This is the second incident of a bison injuring a visitor in 2020; the park re-opened several weeks ago after a prolonged COVID-19 closure.Several recent incidents involving visitors and wildlife at Yellowstone:Earlier this month, a visitor was knocked to the ground after getting too close to a bison.In July 2019, a group of about 50 people got too close to a bison, which then charged and knocked a 9-year-old girl into the air. BILOXI, Miss. – In the lobby of one Mississippi hotel, people aren’t the only ones checking in and out – so are the dogs. “They see that cage. They're like, ‘What is it?’” said the hotel’s director of sales, Teresa Johnston. The gazebo-like kennel is the temporary home for Basil, a 6-month-old terrier mix up for adoption from a local shelter and ready for checkout in the hotel’s lobby. “The guest just gives us their room number and the sweet little puppy goes up,” Johnston said. If the guest wants to adopt them, the dog goes home with them upon checkout. It’s part of a partnership between this Home2 Suites hotel near Biloxi, and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The idea is Johnston’s brainchild. “It's that simple,” she said. “And they've given us the ability to adopt right from the property.” The hotel hosts one shelter dog at a time; all are already spayed and neutered. It’s an out-of-the box effort to try to bring down overcrowding at the local animal shelter. “We have to go out into our community and get a little bit more involved in ways that people wouldn't really associate an animal shelter with,” said Bianca Janik, with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “And so that's a big part of why this program is so successful, is because they don't expect to see a shelter dog.” Since the program began late last year, more than 30 dogs have been adopted at the hotel by people who fell for those puppy dog eyes. The hotel is seeing an added benefit, too. “A lot of people stay at this hotel because of this program,” Johnston said. “And a lot of people spread the love.” Puppy love, that is.In addition to the hotel in Biloxi, another hotel in Mississippi has also started a similar dog adoption program. 1751
