KHARTOUM, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Ahmed Karti said on Friday his visit to China carried reassurances and confirmations to the Chinese side his government keenness to enhance cooperation with China even after a referendum to be held in southern Sudan."We have delivered a message on our keenness on continuation in enhancing the cooperation with China and expanding its investments in the country, particularly in north Sudan," Karti told reporters at Khartoum airport today upon return from a tour that included China and Egypt."China is an important country for Sudan and we are keen to fully coordinate with it, particularly with regard to current international issues. We are expecting China to play an important role in the international meeting on Sudan, scheduled for September 24, 2010," he added.He further stressed that Sudan was looking forward to enhancing ties with China, saying that "I have held consultations with the Chinese leadership on many issues and we have agreed on coordination during the forthcoming meetings of the United Nations General Assembly."The Sudanese minister described his visit to China as "one of the best official visits," adding that "we have managed to convey our viewpoint on many issues that has received complete response on the part of the Chinese leadership."On January 9, 2011, the southern Sudanese are expected to vote in a referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan to opt between unity or separation according to the provisions of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, and the Sudanese Constitution.The referendum would be considered legal if fifty eight percent of the registered voters participated in the referendum, and if the quorum was incomplete, there would be re-voting with the same terms in 60 days of the announcement of the referendum result.The result of the referendum would be decided by a simple majority of fifty percent plus one of the votes.

ANKARA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Turkish scholars gathered at a political forum in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Monday to discuss their economic ties, cooperation in the Middle East and coordination within the Group of 20 (G20).Wang Zhongwei, deputy director of China's State Council Information Office which sponsors the forum, said China and Turkey, both G20 members and emerging economies, share interests in such major issues as reforming international financial system and tackling climate change."We should further coordinate and cooperate in those issues. BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the China Chamber of International Commerce (CCIC) said Wednesday the United States has launched the wrong probe at the wrong time into the policies and practices by China in its green technology sector, as now is the "best time" for bilateral cooperation in the sector.The denunciation of the 301 probe by Lin Shunjie, CCIC deputy secretary general, came after the U.S. government decided to initiate an investigation on Oct. 15 into China's policies and practices in the clean energy industry, acting upon a petition filed in September by the United Steelworkers union.The union claimed the massive subsidies and discriminatory policies by China were shutting U.S. businesses out of China's renewable energy market and causing job losses in the United States. These charges come amidst worries that U.S. protectionist measures against its trade partners might be on the rise due to its sluggish economic recovery.However, Lin Shunjie said government subsidies in the United States to protect its clean energy industry were more extensive than those in China, adding the United States should reevaluate its subsidy policies and to especially benefit small and medium-sized companies.Further, Lin suggested the U.S. government increase the channels of financing for these small-scale companies in order to improve their competence in trade, rather than accuse other countries."The competence of small and medium-sized renewable energy companies in the United States is far behind those in Europe, Japan, and even Australia," said Lin, "while the Chinese market is open and is willing to import more products from overseas."Lin added that China had a trade platform for imported goods exhibitions in Shanghai, but so far very few U.S. companies have reached deals. "The U.S. government has not done enough in helping its enterprises increase their exports."The next five to 10 years would be the period when China and the United States see technology transfers and heightened inter-dependence of markets, Lin said while attending a conference held in Beijing on Wednesday.

CHENGDU, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official said Wednesday that major geological disasters and densely-populated regions would be the two main areas to monitor in the nation's efforts to guard against losses caused by such disasters.In the first 10 months of 2010, 2,909 people were dead or missing following over 30,000 recorded geological disasters, Xu Shaoshi, the Minister of Land and Resources, said at a meeting held Wednesday in Chengdu, capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province.Further, the number of people dead or missing during this period was five times higher than in the same period last year, said Xu.However, the majority of these victims, about 2,000 people, were killed or went missing after five major mud and rock slides which struck areas in west China's Guizhou, Gansu, and Yunnan provinces, Xu said.A massive mudslide triggered by rainstorms slammed Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province this past August, leaving 1,510 dead and 255 others missing."Our focus in loss prevention and control in the future will be to closely watch the major geological disasters and the areas with high human concentrations," said Xu.Xu also urged local governments to make specific plans regarding geological disaster prevention, improve the assessment and pre-cautionary monitoring mechanism, and beef up rescue and response systems in the event of an emergency.
