A major crackdown could be coming to stop those annoying robocalls. New research from YouMail--a company that developed robocall blocking software--shows each person on the country receives about 150 robocalls a year.Alex Quilici, CEO of YouMail, says these terribly annoying calls keep increasing for two reasons. "One is there are more and more scam calls. The second thing that's driving the increase is people aren't answering the phone anymore," Quilici says.Because people don’t answer their phones, it makes the robocallers place more calls, he says.It’s a problem both Democrats and Republicans can agree on.  Senators John Thune, R-South Dakota, and Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, have proposed bipartisan legislation to increase the penalties for robocalls to ,000. They are also proposing to extend the time after a crime in which prosecutors must bring their case from one years to three years.Commercial robocalls are illegal, but the Federal Trade Commission, which is tasked with investigating and charging those who have violated the anti-Robocall federal law, has a hard time prosecuting offenders within the current one-year time limit. “If you look at the current enforcement efforts, there's been a 0 million fine and million fine that's covered people who've made 100 million robocalls or a couple hundred million robocalls. A federal judge in Florida has ruled that the state must give voters whose mismatched signatures disqualified their provisional and mail-in ballots until Saturday at 5 p.m. ET to correct those signature problems -- extending the deadline by two days.The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Mark Walker comes in a suit brought by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson's campaign and Democratic Party officials, who are looking to the courts to help them find votes to narrow the margin in the race with Republican challenger Gov. Rick Scott.The order affects approximately 5,000 voters who sent in ballots by mail or were forced to sign provisional ballots, but whose signatures did not match those on file with the state."There are dozens of reasons a signature mismatch may occur, even when the individual signing is in fact the voter. Disenfranchisement of approximately 5,000 voters based on signature mismatch is a substantial burden," Walker wrote in the order.It is not yet clear exactly how this ruling impacts the timetable to meet Thursday's 3 p.m. recount deadline, or whether there are enough ballots in question to potentially change the outcome of race.The ruling is narrower than the wider relief that Democrats were seeking -- to invalidate the signature-match requirement entirely. Florida law requires signatures on vote-by-mail and provisional ballots match the signatures on file for each voter. Attorneys for Nelson's re-election campaign argued that the signature-match rules violate the US Constitution and called for the judge to invalidate the law. Lawyers representing the state of Florida and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, along with others, argued that the law was valid and constitutional.The number of ballots in question is less than the margin of votes separating the closest race undergoing a recount. A former assistant manager of a Michigan PetSmart has filed a lawsuit in which he claims he was fired for enforcing a store rule and a state-wide mandate requiring customers to wear a mask.Alex Brothers says he called police on July 19 when he saw a customer without a mask at the chain's store in Midland. According to Brothers' attorney, Jennifer McManus, the maskless customer was carrying a gun while shopping in the store."Because the man was openly carrying a weapon, my client decided the smartest course of action was to contact law enforcement about the fact the man was not wearing a mask, as required under the governor's executive order," McManus said.Midland police escorted the man from the store without incident. Two days later, PetSmart fired Brothers, who had worked at the store since 2015 and reportedly had an "excellent" performance record."He was told, 'Well, we know you feel really strongly about this mask issue,' and that was said during the termination meeting," McManus said.Michigan is one of many states that have adopted mandates requiring masks in public. But enforcement of those mandates often falls to retail or restaurant employees — and there have been several incidents in Michigan where such confrontations have ended in violence.In July, a dispute over masks led to a police-involved shooting near Lansing, Michigan. Two months earlier, a woman in nearby Macomb County, Michigan, was accused of attacking a worker after refusing to wear a mask. Also in May, 43-year-old Calvin Munerlyn was shot in the head after asking a family to put on masks before entering a Family Dollar in Flint, Michigan.McManus said those headlines were at the top of her mind when she heard about Brothers' case."Terminating your employee for trying to do their job in these unprecedented times is really unconscionable," McManus said.
