More companies are trying four-day work weeks. Some are doing it to avoid laying people off during the pandemic. Others say it creates a better work-life-balance with employees at home.Elephant Ventures is a software company that started testing employees working four 10-hour days. It's a move to help employee morale and parents dealing with childcare and remote learning.“I think you still have the age-old conversation of if it's 40 hours compressed into four days, you still have how much productivity are you actually getting in a 10-hour workday,” said Barb Holland, an Human Resources Knowledge Advisor with SHRM.Productivity has gone up in other countries, like at Microsoft in Japan, when they tried a four-day work-week last year.Zip Recruiter has seen an increase in job postings that mention four-day work weeks this year.“If you're not wanting to lose your good workers or you're wanting to make sure they're not looking elsewhere for those places that are hiring, you have to be thinking about, ‘how do I retain my good staff,’” said Holland. “I don't want to lose them and flexibility I think is going to be a key piece of retaining staff in the future.”That HR expert says flexibility could be key to attracting new workers in the future.Elephant Ventures plans to test its new work week this month. If it's successful, it could look at reducing the workday by an hour. 1393

NBC weatherman Al Roker announced Friday that he is battling prostate cancer.Roker, 66, made the announcement live on the air on Friday, adding that he is "going to be OK.""It's a good news-bad news kind of thing," Roker said on the Today Show. "Good news is we caught it early. Not great news is that it's a little aggressive, so I'm going to be taking some time off to take care of this."NBC says Roker will undergo surgery in New York next week at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.Roker added that he went public with his diagnosis because he wanted to highlight the dangers the disease poses to American men. One in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes. The disease also disproportionately affects Black men, as one in seven African-American men will face a prostate cancer diagnosis. This story is breaking and will be updated. 875

MILWAUKEE -- Some Milwaukee high schoolers are crushed after the dress they ordered for prom wasn’t done in time for the dance.Indira Ali, Riverside University High School Senior, wanted a custom made prom dress for her dance on April 20.Back in February, she met with Milwaukee designer, Kelvin Hayden and they came up with a design. She said weeks went by and she couldn’t get a hold of him. “I’ve been trying to contact him about it see how my dress is coming along. Every time he would give me an excuse on why I can’t see it, why he’s not returning calls,” Ali said. Ali said her mom put down a 0 deposit for the dress through PayPal.She said she was promised the dress would be done before the dance, but it wasn’t. Hours before prom she was forced to find a different one.“He told me it was going to be done in four weeks and those four weeks came and went by and I still didn’t have a dress,” Ali said. Her mom and others were furious and shared their stories on Facebook, demanding Hayden give these girls their money back. Hayden talked with Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee over the phone. He said he refunded everyone and has apologized to the young girls and their mothers. He said the company he ordered lace from for one of the prom dresses kept sending the wrong kind and weeks went by and he was forced to order a different material. “I ordered some of that fabric and paid for express shipping which was well over 0, it came in and mind you, it came in the day before her prom,” said Hayden. Issues with that one dress, Hayden said, delayed his work on three other prom dresses. With 25 years experience as a designer, Hayden told WTMJ he’s never had anything like this happen before. “There’s nothing I can say that’s going to bring their special day back,” Hayden said. A photographer, Timothy Ricketts, saw the story on social media and decided he would find a way to make it up to the girls. He said he plans to get hair stylists and makeup artists involved and take professional photos of the teens for free. Most parents want to start saving for college while their child is young, but a new study by the Center for Michigan found that might be difficult. In Massachusetts, families with two children are paying, on average, more than ,000 for child care in a year. State tuition for colleges average around that same price."Reality hits when you become a parent,” says mom Yvette Schilling. “And you are working extra hard and working full time and so is your husband."  Schilling says when it comes to child care, the family has to be really mindful of the cost and budget accordingly. On average, parents pay nearly 0 a week for two children in child care. Care.com estimates it at more than ,000 a year.Figuring out how to pay for day care has been a struggle for many mothers."We don't have any family around, so that becomes a little bit of a challenge," Shilling says.  She says hiring a nanny would have cost her almost triple what she's paying for daycare.  "Is it worth it for me to work full time, so we can pay ,000, or should I just stay home and watch my kids myself?” Schilling asks.   So, how can parents save money for child care?According to the Care website, one option is to sign up for a dependent care account through your employer. You can set aside up to ,000 tax-free pay for child care.  If your employer doesn't offer a flexible spending account, take advantage of the child care tax credit. Each family can itemize child care expenses up to ,000 a year and apply a tax credit to it.  To off-set some costs, nanny sharing is becoming a popular trend, allowing two families to share a nanny and split the cost. 1685
