CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- As Chula Vista continues to grow, so does the need for police officers in the city. Last June, voters approved a half cent sales tax increase, giving Chula Vista the highest sales tax in San Diego County. The money goes into the general fund, but os designated for hiring more police and firefighters. Despite the new sales tax, some business owners say they are still having issues with the department's response times. A bakery owner on Third Avenue tells 10News she sometimes has to call police multiple times a week to report a crime, but that sometimes police don't show up or shows up hours after the crime. Captain Phil Collum says the department has hired nine of the 12 officers currently allowed by Measure A. According to SANDAG, crime in Chula Vista is actually down 3 percent in 2019, including property and violent crimes. "Sometimes the perception that crime is on the rise or perception that things feel less safe than they were, in fact all of the data suggests otherwise," said Collum. In a recent survey, 91 percent of Chula Vistans said they are "very satisfied" with the department, despite not meeting response times for priority one and priority two calls. Collum said those response times are slowly improving. The police department says additional positions will be filled through the Measure A sales tax, meaning 31 additional officers by 2023. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of parents from the Sweetwater Union High School district have started a petition hoping to push the district to allow their student-athletes to return to practice.As of Tuesday night, the petition has over 1,100 signatures. The parents want their children to follow all safety and social distancing guidelines, but they say the district has told them the kids can't practice. The petition gives examples of other school districts in San Diego County that have allowed their student athletes to return to practice. The petition even suggests that district officials are keeping sports shut down to balance Sweetwater's multi-million dollar budget deficit.Parents argue that not having sports is affecting their children's mental health and that not practicing could put them at a disadvantage once the seasons starts and when it comes time to get sports scholarships. (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas and Electric is looking into whether or not power lines were damaged during a brush fire in Chula Vista Monday night.The fire happened on Bay Boulevard at the Interstate 5 southbound off-ramp near the Bayfront Charter High School just before 7:00 p.m.At this time it's unclear what may have sparked the brush fire or how much was burned in the blaze. 10News will continue to keep you updated as soon as we have more information.  491

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Donut Bar in Chula Vista abruptly closed its doors Monday, just five months after opening at Eastlake's Village Walk shopping center. A sign on the door said in part: "We have enjoyed serving this community and we appreciate all of the support you have shown us over the last 5 months. We will miss seeing your smiling faces and we will especially miss those of you who graced us with your presence almost every day." Customers were shocked about the closure and told 10News the business would often sell out, with lines out the door.
