CINCINNATI — Matt Moeddel worked tirelessly to comfort and care for his COVID-19 patients, insisting on staying by their sides as they battled a disease so contagious and deadly that most patients who die from it must do so alone. The 43-year-old nurse wouldn't let that happen and held his patients' hands for as long as he could -- until he became infected with COVID-19 himself.His former patients still send his family thank you letters."He wouldn't let somebody die without somebody there with them," said Bethany Moeddel, Matt's sister.Matt was the director of nursing at Bridgeway Pointe in Arlington Heights, Ohio, and won awards for the job he did. For Bethany Moeddel, he was a big brother, the middle child and her Reds game day partner. She said he dreamed of one day buying a cabin in the Smoky Mountains."All he worried about was 'my patients, I need to be there, I need to take care of them,'" said Bethany.He'd just adopted a dog, Wilson, and was settling into his new townhouse when COVID-19 began infecting his patients."He said, 'nobody wants to die without having like a human contact or somebody there,'" said Bethany. "So he would go into the rooms and hold their hands."By May, Matt tested positive for COVID-19 and his Type 2 diabetes made him vulnerable to complications from the illness. Bethany said she suggested her brother go to the hospital, but he hesitated, reluctant to leave his dog alone.Then, 21 days later, family found Matt dead in his home."He was sitting on the stairs with his shoes on and his keys in his pocket," said Bethany. "He was planning to go to the hospital, he was ready to go."Bethany said months later, his former patients and their families are still sending letters expressing gratitude for the way he cared for them and their loved ones.She said now, two months after his death, she's working to share his legacy and hopes his story will inspire others to work to protect one another as Matt protected and cared for his patients."Take it seriously," she said of the pandemic.This article was written by Courtney Francisco for WCPO. 2098

CINCINNATI — Screen time was a perennial concern for modern parents well before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Now, with nearly half of Ohio school districts conducting classes only over the internet and most in-person socialization sharply limited, it’s even more of a catch-22. How much is too much? How little is too little?Children’s Hospital pediatrician Dr. John Hutton studies the effect of technology on children and adolescents, and even he isn’t sure.“Screens have become such a huge part of kids’ lives in a very short period of time that we really don't know a lot of the longer-term effects,” he said Friday.The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has found some correlation between extended screen time and trouble with sleep, mental health, and school performance.Hutton said it’s likely not all the same. Using a laptop, smartphone, or tablet for school, as most Ohio children have done since March, doesn’t necessarily have the same effect as using the same device for social media or games.Still, he encouraged families to closely examine the amount of time they and their children spend using screens every day. He recommended setting aside screen-free times, such as during meals, and encouraging battery-free activities such as reading or playing outside as a healthy complement to children’s daily routines."I think it's very important,” he said. “I think every family is going to have something that's realistic for them. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- After years of a growing demand for cafeteria lunches at South Bay middle and high schools, frustrated parents say the lunchrooms have become overcrowded.Some parents say the problem was predictable. The proliferation of housing developments and road congestion surrounding eastern Chula Vista schools were strong signals that campuses would be impacted. Others say the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall is to blame.However, while parents and students struggle to navigate the crowds during lunch, district officials say the current situation is routine early in the school year.“As students become more comfortable or reacquainted with the campus, class schedules, and learn to prioritize lunch, the flow of the meal service will improve,” says Manny Rubio, Sweetwater Union High School District spokesperson.That’s not so, say families at Otay Ranch High, Eastlake middle and high schools, and Rancho Del Rey. The problem has gotten worse over the years, according to these families. "Yes my kids never get to eat at Eastlake High they always come home with headaches not enough time to eat and by the time they make it thru the line theres no choices of food,” one parent told 10News on Facebook.Some hope to land a fourth-period class near the cafeteria to get to the lunch line quicker."My son mentioned that to mom yesterday. I was a bit skeptical so I downloaded the daily schedule for ELM [Eastlake Middle School]. How the ---- do they expect kids to get from their class, wait in line for food, and eat in 30 minutes?"Another parent said the overcrowding had left her students with few to no meal choices.“If your child shows up a few minutes late they're not going to get any food. My high schooler and middle schooler always brought their own food because of this,” said another parent.Rubio says that he hears the public's concerns but insists the current situation inside the lunchrooms and at various points of sale is only temporary. “At all of our schools we aim for about a 1.5-2 minute wait time. At most of our schools we see lines cleared within 10-15 mins – meaning that after that time there are no lines and wait time is less than 1 minute,” Rubio says.Given those figures -- plus factoring in the time it takes to walk to and from the cafeteria -- a student would have roughly have 5-10 minutes to eat, in a worst-case scenario. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that students get at least 20 minutes for adequate time to eat.“My high school graduate never had enough time to get a school meal. We had to send him food for him to eat because of the lines and wait times,” said one parent.Waiting it out is a risky strategy, according to some parents and students.“At Rancho del Rey Middle they run out of food while kids are still in line. We've been bringing lunch for a few years now, for my peace of mind,” said one mom.DISTRICT: FINANCIAL SCANDAL A NON-FACTORSome parents have speculated that the district's inability to properly tackle the problem is due to a financial scandal that came to light last year. They argue the district has reduced the issue of crowded lunchrooms to a low priority.Currently, SUHSD is working to climb out of a million debt and is facing a state audit for possible fraud.“There aren’t enough resources at the schools for the number of students they have going there! This needs to be corrected!,” one parent said.Rubio says the district’s financial shortfall has nothing to do with the perceived lunchtime problem, and that schools have the resources to ensure they are meeting student needs.SUHSD has routinely overspent its tax-supported Government funding to operate its food services, according to Ed-Data records. The district has spent nearly million more than it was granted between 2011-2018.By comparison, San Diego Unified School District, the county’s largest school district, received a total of 7.8M in funding and spent 3.1M.SUHSD’s most significant expenditure was recorded during the 2017-2018 fiscal year when the district spent .2M of the .9M it was granted for its Cafeteria Special Revenue Fund, according to Ed-Data.Rubio says the district is equally vulnerable to the rising costs in the food service industry, which includes an increase in vendor, menu item, and transportation costs. “We are constantly trying to negotiate lower prices for items, but overall we, like most others, have seen costs go up,” Rubio says.Data on three other San Diego County school districts -- La Mesa-Spring Valley, Fallbrook Union High, San Diego Unified -- show they either underspent or stayed within ,000 of their cafeteria funding between 2013-18. 4693

(KGTV) -- Police in Chula Vista say an 8-year-old boy who went missing from Heritage Elementary School was found safe Wednesday afternoon. Police have yet to say where exactly the boy was found or when he went missing. A San Diego Police Department Helicopter could be seen in the Otay Ranch area searching for the young boy. 368

  

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — New businesses are set to call the Otay Ranch Town Center home in the coming months. Just a few months ago, the mall had more than a dozen empty storefronts and employees at the mall called it a ghost town. The new businesses moving in include Novo Brazil Brewing, Planet Fitness, and Barons Market.LONGFORM: Vacant storefronts reflect mall struggles at Otay Ranch Town CenterBrookfield Property Partners took over full ownership of the mall six weeks ago. It was a part of a larger merger across the country. The mall's general manager, Steven Sayers, sat down with 10News."Nothing was going wrong with the property at all. It was just, some of it was just timing with expiring leases and unfortunately, some tenants just left," says Sayers.Sayers says these new businesses were already in the works before the merger. He credits the construction surrounding the mall is a big factor for why these businesses are choosing to invest in the mall. RELATED: Barons Market grocery store coming to Chula Vista's Otay Ranch Town Center"They advertise very heavily that you're within walking distance of Otay Ranch Town Center, where people can eat shop and dine, so that's a big plus for them and it's a big plus for us as well," says Sayers. Shoppers tell 10News they hope the mall will keep adding businesses that will encourage them to shop in town versus going elsewhere.    1464
