SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As many San Diego business owners fold due to coronavirus pandemic pressures, a few brave entrepreneurs are launching their businesses now, including a Pacific Beach couple that turned their passion for plants into a "blooming" business. It was the sign of the times for boxing instructor Cody Warden -- COVID-19 made him jobless."I was laid off during that time," Warden said. "It was not legal for me to teach boxing."His girlfriend, Tammy Nguyen, a social media content manager, was also now working out of their Pacific Beach home. But when the couple looked around, all they saw was joy."We were getting all these houseplants in our house, and it was filling this void if you will," Warden said. "It brought us companionship in a time when it was really difficult to see your friends or family."So they took a leap of faith last month, and decided to turn their passion into a business. They launched IvyMay & Co., an online houseplant curating company that offers tips and free, contact-less delivery anywhere in San Diego County."Plants are a form of therapy for people who might be depressed during this time, and being able to take care of these plants and seeing them grow gave a lot of people happiness," Nguyen said.Science backs this up. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology looked at the psychological responses of young adults to a computer task, versus an indoor plant-related task. Researchers found that people who interacted with plants had significantly lower blood pressure, as well as physiological and psychological stress.Although Warden and Nguyen cannot see their customer's smiles underneath the masks, they can hear it in their voices when they deliver. They say it reassures them that starting a business that brings joy during the pandemic was the right thing to do."If I could keep a house plant alive, you can too!" Warden laughed. "There's no such thing as a green thumb. Basic things, learn how to read your plant, and listen to what it's telling you."As the business grows, Warden and Nguyen hope to partner with local artists who can create unique pots for their plants. 2164

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cleanup is underway after a driver went on a rampage, hitting three cars before crashing into an apartment building in North Park.  "I heard just a really loud bang noise and I felt the apartment shutter," said Laura C, a resident in that building. It started when police say the 60-year-old driver hit an electrical box while getting on the 805 southbound from El Cajon Boulevard. He went down an embankment and continued south before crashing into a car on the highway. The driver kept going and got off on University Avenue. That's when he crashed into two more cars and a pole near Boundary Street. He then put the car into reverse and plowed through a gas station and into the apartment building wall. "Out of nowhere he just went full blast in reverse until that building stopped him," said witness, Vicki Nikbakht. Police believe the driver may have been under the influence of drugs. Residents were evacuated in fear that the building would collapse. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one else was hurt.  1110

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At St. John The Evangelist's Sunday night service, the pews were packed to hear why their pastoral associate was resigning.Aaron Bianco was asked to come to St. John August of 2016. His work: organizing events, budgets and other behind the scenes tasks. His goal, to build up a more inclusive church.Bianco has been married to his husband for 10 years last month, and once he started at St. John, so did the attacks."They've threatened me from shooting me down across the street, to throwing Molotov cocktails into the church," Bianco said. The hate groups sent emails equating him to a pedophile and threatening him. His tires were slashed, fire thrown at the church doors, the office broken into and spray painted with a gay slur."They're no different from organized crime or a terrorist group. They will continue until they get their way," Bianco said their goal was to force him out. "I'm convinced that the gospel is on my side, and they can spew their hate, but I'm not going to allow them to make me hate them back," Bianco said.Last week his personal information including photos of his family and his home address was published on a conservative Catholic website. Bianco said he saw someone in their yard in the middle of the night  watching the house.Since the threats, he's added security to his home and filed police reports. He realized it was all too much, "My life and those of my family are more important than any job."Bianco addressed the packed church at Sunday night's mass, "when hate rages like a fire, love rains down, and I feel it from so many of you in this room."Bianco told 10News he believes there is more good in the world than bad, explaining he's received encouraging notes from people all over the world. After his speech, the church erupted, "It made me so happy that everybody stood there and clapped for the longest ovation I've ever heard in a church in my life. Letting him know that we love you, we care about you and you're going to be missed," Parishioner Berena Pe?a said. She attended the church a decade prior and stopped coming because she didn't feel welcome as a lesbian. Her friend convinced her to try again two years ago. She said she could feel the difference, and it woke her up.Bianco said this is not the end, and he will keep fighting. He said he will still attend church, hopes these groups stop their attacks and instead come and talk with him. 2524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a woman lay paralyzed from a horrific accident, police say someone was inside her car, stealing from her.  The search for that thief is now turning to San Diego County."She was the nicest, most wonderful person I've ever known," said Don Nelson.Nelson says his wife of 27 years, Terri, was on her way to pick up her father for a hospital trip in August when a truck rear-ended her car at a stoplight in Riverside.  As she lay with her neck broken, amid the commotion of bystanders and first responders coming to her aid, police say someone got into her car and stole her purse.Detectives say within days of the accident, surveillance images show her using Terri's credit cards and writing checks in her name. Nelson says as some ,000 worth of purchases were made at various businesses, from fast food restaurants and Albertsons to Costco."I think that's the lowest form of life that could possibly be. You have to be a sorry person to do something like that," said Nelson. For three months, Terri was paralyzed and on a ventilator, until she passed last week from complications from the accident.  Her husband's grief is not the only emotion that consumes him. There is also anger. He's still dealing with collection agencies seeking money from the thief's shopping spree.  During that crime spree, police believe the woman rented a Nissan Rogue in Terri's name, before the CHP pulled that car over on a highway in San Diego County. The two men inside the car have yet to lead detectives to the woman, but police hope tips from the public will."I just can't believe a lightning bolt didn't strike the person. I hope they never run into me, and I know who they are," said Nelson.Nelson believes the rented car was pulled over near downtown San Diego, but the CHP has not confirmed that. If you have any information on the case, call the Riverside Police Department at 951-353-7115. 1936

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol investigators are correcting their initial findings of a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in February. In March, CHP said 35-year-old Justin Callahan was at fault for the fatal collision on the northbound I-5 transition ramp to westbound I-8 on Feb. 26 just before 2 a.m.Investigators had believed Callahan, driving in a Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling eastbound in the westbound I-8 lanes when he collided with a Toyota Camry on the transition ramp — a finding Callahan's family had contested.RELATED: Family disputes CHP's details of I-5 wrong-way crashCallahan died at the scene while two female occupants inside the Toyota suffered major injuries.Friday, CHP said they've now concluded the Toyota was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with Callahan's vehicle on the ramp.Investigators also said the driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Lauren Freeman, was found to be under the influence at the time of the crash.Freeman turned herself into San Diego Superior Court Friday. She faces charges including murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and felony DUI causing injury or death.RELATED: Driver killed in wrong-way crash on I-5 in Midway areaCallahan's family said following the crash he should have been heading to Ocean Beach from Chula Vista after work at the time of the crash, not away from it."It doesn't make any sense," his brother, Tommy Villafranca, told 10News in March.  "Why would he get back on the freeway and get back the opposite direction?"It takes 21 minutes just to get from his work to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. He’s still got to turn around go back, and that would take even more time, so the timeline is not working at all."Callahan's parents, Lowell and America Callahan, sent 10News the following statement:"We are grateful for the many hours spent by the CHP investigators and especially officer Cliinkscales, who kept us informed over the last several months, concerning the investigation. Initially, Justin had been reported by CHP as the wrong way driver on I-5 north on the transition ramp to I-8 in San Diego. This took place early Monday morning at approximately 1:55 a.m. on February 26, 2018. We are pleased that his name is finally cleared in this horrible collision that took his life instantly. 2366
