UNITED NATIONS, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday voiced its support for the international efforts to promote the Middle East peace process, saying it will continue to play a constructive role in working with the international community for durable, comprehensive and fair solution in the Middle East.The statement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking to reporters here after the UN Security Council met on the current situation in the Middle East.Li said that China is deeply concerned about the long-stalled peace process in the Middle East. BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Being the only foreign rescue team to run medical-aid stations in quake-ravaged Haiti, Chinese rescuers are giving quake victims what they desperately need: medical assistance, team members told Xinhua via phone Saturday.     The China International Search and Rescue Team, arriving in Port-au-Prince at 2 a.m. local time on Jan. 14, opened the first medical assistance station at 8 p.m. the next day, said captain Hou Shike.     The station had been treating patients pulled out of debris and provided medical support to medical and security personnel, he said.     China's second station in the refugee camp near the office building of Haitian prime minister had treated and some 120 people, while giving hygiene tips and conducting epidemic prevention work in the camp.     "To prevent epidemics, we had sterilized an area of 300 square meters in the refugee camp crammed with thousands of quake victims," Hou said.     "Confronted with severe wound infection, numerous refugees are in urgent need of professional medical treatment," said Fan Haojun, deputy captain of the team.     He said although local volunteers had done their best to offer basic treatment, but because of the lack of wound cleansing, infections among some of the wounded had deteriorated that even small operations costed more time and medicines than usual, said Fan.     The Chinese rescue team of more than 60 people left Beijing for the Caribbean island Wednesday night along with 10 tonnes of food, equipment and medicines.     The massive quake also left eight Chinese police officers, serving in China's peacekeeping forces, buried. The body of one missing police officer had been found, said China's public security ministry late Saturday night.

BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said Friday the U.S. decision to impose preliminary duties on Chinese potassium phosphate salts and coated paper was unfair and discriminatory.Yao said "frequent" countervailing probes by the U.S. into Chinese products have "unfairly restricted normal exports," adding the fresh anti-dumping measures came only two years after the U.S. ruled China's coated paper exports did not harm the domestic industry in November 2007.The two products will face 109 percent and up to 13 percent duties, respectively, according to a U.S. Commerce Department statement Tuesday.Yao said the fundamental reason behind the difficulties in the U.S. coated paper industry was due to weak demand caused by the financial crisis. He said passing the problem on to Chinese manufacturers was unacceptable.He said China firmly opposes abuse of trade protectionist measures by the U.S. and would negotiate with the U.S. over the unfair move to protect the interests of Chinese companies.

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- A severe drought has affected 69.6 million Mu (about 4.64 million hectares) of arable land and left 12.7 million people and 8.4 million livestock short of drinking water, said China's drought relief authorities Saturday.The figures nearly doubled the average level for corresponding periods over the past years, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.The drought had caused huge losses and serious drinking water shortages in the affected areas, said Liu Ning, vice minister of water resources.Local governments have put 750 million yuan (110 million U.S. dollars) and mobilized nearly 9 million people to cope with the draught, which temporarily helped 7.4 million people and 3.6 million livestock out of drinking water shortages, Liu said.He called for prompt allocation of more relief funds from the central government and more efforts to ensure drinking water safety and spring irrigation.The dry spell started last autumn and has hit southwest, south and part of north China. The seriousness, duration, areas affected and losses are rarely seen in history, said the Ministry of Civil Affairs Friday.Severe drought would continue to ravage the already hard-stricken southwest China as no major rainfalls are expected in the next three days, the China Meteorological Administration warned Saturday.
