SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An almost strangled coyote is getting sympathy from Katie Ryan's neighbors in Oaks North in Rancho Bernardo and from online friends."People are just 'Wow! This is phenomenal. Let's get her rescued, let's get her rescued!'" Ryan said.What appears to be 5- or 6-inch length of plastic flex-pipe that might have been discarded is wrapped tightly around the coyote's neck."Little critters try to make a home in there and other wildlife try to bring out a meal and it's obvious she got her head stuck in there and couldn't back it out," Ryan said.RELATED: Man in construction worker disguise suspected in series of San Diego break-insRyan's familiar with this particular coyote; having seen it out and about for years. Many people fear coyotes but she appreciates the wildlife she watches nightly."They're part of the eco-system here; they clean up; this was one of my favorite rat-catchers," Ryan said.She's worried that cuts on the coyote's neck will get infected and poison it; so she and others have been trying to capture the animal.  "Little tidbits of goodies to lead her in this direction and she almost got into a smaller coyote trap," she added.Wednesday night, they set up a larger trap; one that is mountain lion-sized but no success."She stayed ten feet away from the corner; I think she knew, she spotted the difference in the trap. They're very sensitive to change in the environment and when that happens, they run off," Ryan said.Her brainstorming with others now; hoping to get to the coyote in time; somehow."We're hoping we get her and get her some medical help; get her fixed up and put back into nature." 1703

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Ahead of their games in San Diego, the Harlem Globetrotters took to the USS Midway Museum to make some trick shots.Several of the team’s players, TNT Maddox, El Gato Melendez and Zeus McClurkin took three shots in a row to a hoop on the flight deck below.This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Globetrotters performing for U.S. troops around the world.TNT is only the 9th female in the team’s history.The Globetrotters will play two games at the Valley View Casino Center Friday, February 16 and Friday February 23.Watch the video of the tricks in the player below: 598

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Ohio man accused of pepper-spraying 11 San Diego Police officers during a demonstration last month has pleaded not guilty.Denzel Draughn, 28, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony counts of unlawful use of tear gas against a peace officer and 11 felony counts of use of force against a peace officer.On Aug. 28, a group of demonstrators protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc., marched through downtown San Diego.See Sky10 video of the demonstration below:Police say that as the group neared 9th and E Streets, a vehicle that was following the group failed to stop at red lights. After police stopped the driver, a crowd began to form near the car and officers who pulled the vehicle over.SDPD says that the group ignored demands to back up from the scene, prompting one officer to pull out pepper spray. Police say one person tried to knock the pepper spray out of the officer's hand, forcing the officer to discharge the spray.Several police officers then tried to arrest the person. As the officers were placing the person in custody, a pepper spray canister fell on the ground. Officers say Draughn picked up the canister and sprayed it twice, hitting 11 officers.SDPD says Draughn fled but was later found and arrested.If convicted, Draughn faces probation to 11 years in jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second person has died and three children remain hospitalized after a fire tore through a Logan Heights home Sunday morning. The family’s oldest son told 10News his mother and father, who he identified as Nicolasa Mayo and Jose Romero, were killed in the fire. His two younger sisters and brother remain in the hospital following the blaze. The 26-year-old says he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man tells 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home. "My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.The fire started around 4:30 Sunday morning on the 3100 block of Clay Street. "The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm. The curtain was open and I looked across the neighbors house was just bursting in flames," said Maria Orona, who lives nearby. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out. One witness who was nearby when the fire started told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through bars in the windows, unable to escape.At least three fire engines and dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze.At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire, but the metro arson strike team was called to the home to investigate.A GoFundMe has been set up for the family to help cover funeral expenses. 1541

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An official with the Encinitas Union School District confirmed Sunday a presumptive positive case of COVID-19.In a release sent to families of the district, Superintendent Andree Grey said "individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary" tested positive. Grey could not provide further details citing privacy restrictions."I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff.
