SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new technology just reached San Diego and Border Patrol agents say it’s going to help them do their jobs faster, easier and more efficiently. They’re called Mobile Video Surveillance Systems. Each unit is grounded to a Ford F150, the controls to operate the cameras mounted on a mast in the bed of the truck are inside. San Diego is the second place in the nation to have truck like these. Border Patrol says they’ll be rolling out in just a couple days. The first place to have Mobile Video Surveillance System trucks is Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Michael Scappechio is a supervisory with Border Patrol and he tells 10 News, “the looming threat of the migrant caravan in Tijuana and more people potentially on the way we need to make sure we’re prepared for that”. The two cameras allow the agents to see two pictures at all times, a daytime camera and an infrared camera. While Scappechio says the need for this kind of technology is needed in San Diego, it’s their increased rate of arrests that landed the trucks here, “nearly a 90 percent increase is significant, that’s going to get attention, that’s going to get resources, that’s going to get man power, infrastructure and technology”.Border Patrol tells 10 News these trucks won’t replace the border wall but instead, will go hand in hand with it. 1334

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Weeks after storms flooded University of California San Diego dorms, students are still reeling from the damage.UCSD officials said 41 students, from Thurgood Marshall and Revelle Colleges, were relocated after the flooding Nov. 20. By Dec. 6, they said 19 had moved back into their rooms.Students showed 10News their dorms that smelled of mold. Friday, a dorm in the Thurgood Marshall Lowers Apartments had a hole in the ceiling. Students said the hole was cut after water fell from the ceiling days after the Nov. 20 storm."I noticed something dropping and it's like starting to smell," a student said. "It started dropping from three holes in the ceiling ... It started pouring in so I had to get like three trashcans to hold the water."The student said every time it rained after the original storm they saw leaks through the same hole.READ RELATED: UC San Diego students reeling from flooded dorms after storm10News visited UCSD Dec. 6 and were invited into another Thurgood Marshall Lowers Apartment, where fans and a dehumidifier were whirling.The student said he had to move out, his clothes reeked and water seeped through a window in his bedroom each time it rained."It smells moldy, it's super hot, and it's just a nasty kind of humid feel that hasn't gone away in two and a half weeks," he said frustrated.UCSD said they were working to repair the dorms, using dehumidifiers, replace drywall and carpet if necessary. 1455

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A splash of color brings life back to Bay Park Elementary. Over the weekend, parents and volunteers joined together to give the school a facelift. The beautification project now has kids excited to come to school. “They were just blown away,” says Emily Auer. “Their face just lit up. They actually touched the walls.”Bay Park Elementary is approaching it’s the 80th anniversary. The school’s beautification team brought together almost 80 volunteers. The project started Friday night until late Sunday afternoon. Volunteers painted the walls and wooden backpack holders. Parents tell 10News one family donated a bunch of small desks with chairs that now sit in the halls. Behr gave the paint for the project. “Such a wonderful group of kids, so positive,” says parent Erica Krystek. “We really wanted that positivity reflected in the hallways.”The Bay Park Elementary Beautification Team plans to do more upgrades in the future. They hope to paint and add new carpet to the school’s auditorium. 1022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection over the weekend seized more than 440 pounds of drugs worth more than .5 million.From noon Friday to 12 a.m. Sunday, officers intercepted 277 pounds of methamphetamine, 21 pounds of fentanyl, 13 pounds of heroin and 128 pounds of cocaine.The drugs were found hidden inside a gas tank, spare tire, dashboard, doors and quarter panels.RELATED: CBP stops attempt to smuggle 15 people off coast of San Diego“CBP’s detection and apprehension of contraband plays a significant role in keeping our communities safe and we remain committed to securing our nation’s borders,” said Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego.The drug seizure is one of many in recent months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two children suffered injuries Monday when a pick-up truck driven by an elderly man hit tables and parked cars outside a University City Starbucks.The crash happened about 8 a.m. outside the coffee shop at 3202 Governor Drive at Regents Road, according to San Diego Police. The Starbucks is near the University City Post Office.The 85-year-old man driving the truck jumped the curb, crashing into customers.A 6-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Police did not release details about her condition. A 2-year-old girl had an injury to her lip but did not need further treatment.San Diego Police have not announced what caused the crash. 689
