WASHINGTON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Women who have higher levels of the appetite-controlling hormone leptin have fewer symptoms of depression, and this apparent inverse relationship is not related to body mass index (BMI), a new study finds. The results were presented Monday at The Endocrine Society's 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston, the United States."Animal data suggest that leptin may reduce anxiety and improve depression. Our study in women suggests that leptin may indeed have antidepressant qualities," said the study's lead author, Elizabeth Lawson, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.Leptin, the product of fat cells, signals satiety, or fullness. It is low in thin women and high in obese women, according to Lawson. She also said there is an increased prevalence of anxiety and depression in certain conditions in which leptin levels are typically low. These include the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, in which there is abnormally low weight and body fat, and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, in which women have stopped menstruating despite having normal weight."It is unknown whether low leptin levels contribute to the development of mood disorders in these women," Lawson said.She and her co-workers studied the relationship between leptin levels and symptoms of anxiety and depression in 64 women. Fifteen of the women had anorexia nervosa, 12 were normal weight with hypothalamic amenorrhea, 20 were normal weight and in good health, and 17 were overweight or obese but still healthy.All subjects were asked questions to assess symptoms of depression and anxiety, with high scores indicating more symptoms. Besides measuring leptin levels in the blood, the researchers assessed the women's BMI, a measure of weight for height.The relationship between leptin and depression symptoms was independent of BMI. This finding indicates that leptin may mediate symptoms of depression and that this effect is not a function of low weight, Lawson said."Further research administering leptin to humans will be important in understanding whether this hormone has a potential role in the treatment of depression," she said.

MANILA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- At least 200 people, mostly children, have been taken to hospitals after allegedly suffering from food poisoning at a birthday party in the northern Philippine province of Bulacan, local newspaper Manila Bulletin reported Tuesday.Most of the victims suffered from stomach and chest pains, diarrhea and vomiting, local health officer Dr. Rizalli Lucas was quoted as saying.The victims claimed the cause of their food poisoning was the spaghetti served during a birthday celebration over the weekend in a village of Calumpit town.James P. de Jesus, mayor of Calumpit, said the situation is now contained and controlled but they still have to implement health measures and to determine the cause of the alleged food poisoning.Police have started investigating the incident.

BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Google lacked evidence to support its accusations that Chinese hackers are behind the alleged cyber attacks on hundreds of its email accounts and the timing to make such accusations is evil-intentioned, Chinese experts said on Friday."Google's accusation is neither serious nor credible as it has not published any evidence that shows the hackers are from China," said Dai Yiqi, a cyber security expert with Tsinghua University.Eric Grosse, engineering director of Google's Security Team wrote on the company blog Wednesday that unidentified hacker attacks likely originated from the eastern Chinese city of Jinan, tried to collect user passwords of the Gmail accounts of hundreds of users, including senior U.S. government officials, Chinese "human rights activists" and journalists.A report released in 2009 by the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission, an organization created by the U.S. Congress, claimed that Jinan is the home of a Chinese military reconnaissance office.An anonymous cyber security expert believes, despite Google not referring to the Chinese government in the latest attack claim, the company is targeting the Chinese government by listing the victims of the attacks as those whom only the Chinese government are interested in."Both their intentions and the timing of the accusation are dubious," Dai said.Google's accusation followed on the heel of the reported Pentagon's first formal cyber strategy. CANBERRA, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Australian scientists on Saturday said a satellite due to re-enter Earth poses a negligible threat to life and property on Earth.U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), which weighs more than five tons, is expected to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere at 1058 (AEST) on Saturday. The U.S.-based Center for Orbital and Re-entry Debris Studies estimates that re-entry could occur up to seven hours before or after this time.According to Nonathan Nally, a former editor of two space magazines and currently editor of the Australian Space News website, the satellite poses a negligible threat to life and property on Earth."Most of the satellite will burn up on re-entry, with perhaps as many as 26 stronger or harder small pieces surviving to reach the surface," Nally said in a statement."But with the majority of the Earth comprising oceans or uninhabited (or very sparsely populated) remote regions, the chances are overwhelming that any pieces of UARS that survive re- entry will fall harmlessly and never be seen again."Since the spacecraft is no longer powered, U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration has no control over where it comes down, but Nally said there is a small chance that debris from the satellite could land in Australia.Debris from SkyLab, another satellite which plunged to Earth, was scattered over parts of Western Australia in 1979. Its total dry mass is about 5.5 tonnes. UARS is one of the largest NASA satellites to plunge back to Earth uncontrolled in the last 30 years.Since the beginning of the Space Age in the late-1950s, there have been no confirmed reports of an injury resulting from re- entering space objects.?
