A high school teacher from San Diego and her students are up for an Academy Award, KABC reports. They’re all taboo subjects in the United States, periods, menstruation and bleeding. But a group of high school students and their teacher, Melissa Berton, are trying to change that. Berton is originally from San Diego and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. Now, she's a producer on “Period. End of Sentence” and an English teacher at Oakwood High School in Los Angeles. “I think it has been a profound experience from start to finish,” Berton said. In 2013, she advised a group of students who were selected as United Nations delegates to advocate for women and girls. That’s when their journey to normalize menstruation began. “Who better to sort of be the voice for that than high school young women who are in that moment,” Berton said. Originally, the short documentary was a marketing tool for their bigger vision. A non-profit they created called Pad Project. Their mission was to get a machine that creates biodegradable pads to a rural village in India. “We never thought it would be an Oscar nominated film but the idea was always, if we could just make an educational film, to raise awareness about this issue, then that would be the jewel in the crown of our non-profit”The students were in charge of fundraising and creating the non-profit as well as bringing the documentary to life. Seven executive producers on the project are either in college or grad school and several associate producers are in high school. They put the documentary through the film festival circuit and received award after award and an Academy Award nomination. The students along with Berton say that their biggest achievement of all was normalizing periods for women around the world. “I think the students have felt different responses from their classmates and have felt a little less shy about something that maybe we don't need to feel so shy about,” Berton said. 1972

A California police officer shot during the Las Vegas mass shooting outside Mandalay Bay hotel and casino is at home with his family for the first time in months.Friends and family welcomed Ontario police officer Michael Garcia home yesterday. Both he and his fiance were wounded during the Oct. 1, 2017 shooting. At one point she jumped on top of him to shield him from gunfire after he'd been shot in the head.Thanks to her bravery and months of medical assistance, Michael Garcia survived. He's now trying to move forward with his life and regain some semblance of normalcy."It's everything, it's been a long road, so I'm just grateful for everything," said Garcia.Garcia can't work at the moment due to his extensive rehabilitation but that hasn't kept him from being upbeat. Other's have taken notice of his positivity and have decided to help out. That is why when Garcia arrived home he was shocked to find out he was the recipient of a brand new car. A college football player from the College of Wooster in Ohio died on Sunday, after he was transported to the hospital following a game on Saturday. Clayton Geib, who was an All-Conference offensive lineman from London, Ohio, died at the age of 21. Geib was a three-year starter for NCAA Division III Wooster, starting in 33 games. According to the college's athletic department, Geib was transported to the hospital on Saturday after complaining that he did not feel well. The cause of his death is unknown. "Clayton was a wonderful student and member of the College of Wooster community, and beloved by many," said Sarah R. Bolton, Wooster's president, "Our hearts are breaking, and all our prayers and thoughts are with Clayton's family, teammates, and friends."Wooster is located Northeast Ohio. Geib's death is the second among college football players in the area this year. In June, freshman Tyler Heintz died following football conditioning drills at Kent State. Heintz's cause of death was ruled as hyperthermia by a coroner. It was later discovered that Kent State employed a conditioning coach who could not produce proper credentials.  1230

A bystander video shows the moment a demonstrator was hit by a Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy's vehicle Saturday night as people protested the shooting death of Stephon Clark.The collision happened during a vigil as a woman carrying a "Stephon Clark Rest in Power" sign walked in front of a sheriff's vehicle and motioned the driver to stop, according to a video from the National Lawyers Guild Legal Observers obtained by CNN.The deputy then drove away, said Guy Danilowitz, a legal observer who recorded the video."The vehicle accelerated and struck her, accelerated very fast and struck her violently and she fell to the ground," Danilowitz said."It was a very fast acceleration, not the way you would move with people around," he added.The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.About eight seconds before the collision, a deputy inside the sheriff's SUV could be heard on a loudspeaker repeatedly telling protesters to "back away from my car."The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said protesters approached the vehicles and "began yelling while pounding and kicking the vehicles' exterior.""The collision occurred while the patrol vehicle was traveling at slow speeds," said Sheriff's spokesman Sgt.
