BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- More relief supplies, worth 20 million yuan (2.94 million U.S. dollars), have been sent from China to flood-hit Pakistan, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.The shipments mainly contained urgently-needed daily necessities, including grain, cooking oil, flour, sugar, salt and medicine, the ministry said in a brief notice on its website.The supplies are to be transported through a land route to the Sust dry port near the Pakistan-China border from Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the statement said.However, the ministry did not say when the supplies would arrive, as workers were still rushing to repair the road linking Kashgar and Khunjerab Pass.China is one of the first countries to respond to the relief needs of Pakistan when it was hit by the worst floods in 81 years. China's first delivery of aid, worth 10 million yuan, was delivered on Aug. 4. So far, 40 million yuan worth of supplies provided by China have arrived in Pakistan.China decided to offer an additional 60 million yuan of relief supplies to Pakistan, MOC official Chong Quan announced Wednesday while meeting with Masood Khan, Pakistani ambassador to China.Masood Khan, on behalf of the Pakistani government and people, expressed his gratitude for China's assistance, saying the food, tents and medicine provided by the Chinese government were Pakistan's most urgently needed materials.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said on Wednesday that some urgently-needed materials including tents, power generators and sludge-cleaning equipment provided by the People's Liberation Army to the Pakistani armed forces will arrive in Pakistan's Islamabad on Wednesday.

BEIJING,Aug 9(Xinhuanet) -- China's high savings rate is expected to fall substantially in coming years as its workforce shrinks, the population ages and social security spending increases, a BIS report shows.In research published by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) on the “myth and reality” of China’s savings rate, Ma Guonan and Wang Yi found that the Asian giant needs its population to spend more in order to sustain rapid economic growth in coming years.The researchers, who were writing in their personal capacity, also reject claims that Chinese State firms have been benefiting from high savings thanks to exchange rate distortions and subsidies designed to drive economic growth.They point out that “less advantaged” and more efficient firms have been the ones posting the greatest gains in earnings in recent years rather than State-owned companies.China’s gross national savings soared from 39.2 percent of output in 1990 to 53.2 percent in 2008, far higher than the United States, which saved only 12.2 percent in 2008.Even compared to other Asian giants — Japan with 27 percent in 2007 and India with 33.6 percent in 2008 — China’s share of savings as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) is significantly larger.Nonetheless, the population and social trends that have underpinned China’s growth and savings rates are likely tail off significantly over the next decade, the two Chinese researchers argued.In the wake of the global slump, world leaders and economists have been asking China to spend more, rather than pin its economic growth on exports to the West, in order to help address world trade imbalances.Ma, a BIS economist and Wang, who is from the Chinese central bank, said however that the current savings trend by Chinese households will not last.The swelling working population in recent years has boosted savings in recent years, they said.In addition, large-scale corporate restructuring between 1995 and 2005 increased job uncertainty, forcing workers to set aside more money in case they were fired. YICHANG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam was tested for the second time this month when the swiftest water flow of the year hurtled down the swollen Yangtze River on Wednesday morning.Flow rates as high as 56,000 cubic meters per second were recorded at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, dam engineers said.The dam withstood the flow with a water discharge rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, meaning 16,000 cubic meters of water per second accumulated in the reservoir behind the dam.The safety monitoring results of the dam during the second flood peak have met engineers' predictions to prove its ability to contain flood waters, said Cao Guangjing, chairman of the China Three Gorges Corporation.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 158 meters at 8 a.m.Wednesday, about 17 meters below its maximum capacity of 175 meters.Officials expect the water level to rise to 161.5 meters Friday, a spokesman with the Yangtze River hydrology bureau said Wednesday.Continuous downpours in recent weeks have raised water levels in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.Water flows on the river's upper reaches reached 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20 -- the highest level since the dam was completed last year and 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.Ship traffic through the dam resumed last Thursday after the first peak flow passed. But shipping was halted again at 10 p.m. Tuesday as the second round of floodwaters approached.After shipping service was suspended, a road near the dam was opened for vehicles to transport goods and people across the dam. 

BEIJING/YICHUN Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday started the official probe into the Yichun plane crash which killed 42 people and injured 54 others while domestic airlines were ordered to overhaul safety measures.The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has set up a special work group to probe the cause of the crash. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao ordered a thorough investigation and beefed-up efforts to ensure air travel safety.Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, who led an investigation team to the lush forested city of Yichun overnight after the crash, headed the work group.Zhang called upon the work-group's first meeting Wednesday but details of the meeting were not made public.Li Jian, vice director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), told Xinhua that the work group has started to gather evidence for the probe, but the process would take some time.A Brazil-made ERJ-190 turbine jet of Henan Airlines crashed during the landing at the forests-surrounded Lindu Airport of Yichun City late Tuesday night, killing 42 and injuring 54 passengers and the crew on board.Fifteen severely injured, including children and a vice minister, were transferred to four key hospitals in Harbin, the provincial capital on Wednesday night.Initial probes and survivors' accounts indicate the plane missed the runway and crashed on the ground, cracking the cabin and triggering a mild explosion.No signs of sabotage have been found so far, investigators said.The black boxes of the jet have been retrieved.The Lindu airport of Yichun was closed down shortly while operations of the Henan Airlines were suspended.The board of directors of Henan Airlines on Wednesday sacked the airline's general manager Li Qiang and appointed an acting manager to replace him.Cao Bo, Li's replacement, served as the chief pilot of Shenzhen Airlines, the parent company of Henan Airliens.Major Chinese carriers, including the China Eastern and China Southern, on Wednesday called upon emergency meetings to review the companies' safety measures.

BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Many Chinese parents do not like their children using the Internet and a majority of them worry that surfing Internet could negatively affect children's school work, according to a blue paper on Internet use by minors in China released Friday.The blue paper says 42.6 percent of the parents surveyed "strongly oppose their children's use of Internet" or "relatively oppose", while as high as 78.4 percent say they worry that surfing Internet could adversely affect children's study. Another 44.9 percent worry about their children's exposure to pornography online.The blue paper was jointly published by the career development center for Chinese Young Pioneers, the Center for Humanities and Social Sciences Studies by Young Scholars at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Science Academic Press.This was the first blue paper on Chinese youngsters, and the figures in the report were based on a survey conducted from 2006 to 2009, Li Wenge, director of the career development center for the Chinese Young Pioneers, said at a press conference for the release of the blue paper here Friday.Li said the respondents surveyed were elementary and middle school students as well as their parents and teachers in both urban and rural areas, developed and less-developed areas in 11 provincial-level regions in China.According to the blue paper, 46.9 percent of the online community users are under 25 years old.However, there are very few websites designed especially for minors, and children did not know
