DENVER, Colo. -- A man quit his job after he says he was told he couldn't work from home amid the coronavirus outbreak. Now, the company is making changes.On Thursday, Charter Communications made changes to its policies to help employees during crisis. The company says it will now let employees they believe "can remain productive outside the office without endangering our obligation to provide critical services" work remotely. Charter says employees will receive an additional three weeks of paid time off to be used for "any COVID-19-related personal need."The company also said in a statement, it is working on "increased social distancing" plans in its call centers and operations facilities.Last week, Denver-based systems engineer Nick Wheeler resigned from Charter over the company not letting him work remotely. "The science of social distancing is real. We have the complete ability to our jobs from home,” he wrote in an email to hundreds of people at Charter. Wheeler says Charter wouldn't let employees work from home. He says much of his work was done on a laptop.“What I do is literally interfaced with systems that are in data centers in other states,” Wheeler said. Wheeler says he and co-workers recently raised concerns as the outbreak grew. Then, he sent the email last week. It went to 460 people at Charter, including his senior vice president. "Coming into the office now is pointlessly reckless it’s also socially irresponsible. Charter, like the rest of us, should do what’s necessary to stop the spread of coronavirus,” Wheeler wrote. “I included everybody because everybody was involved. It’s a pretty serious crisis,” he said. Wheeler says not long after that email, he was called to his boss' office. He was given the option of using his vacation time. DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - All it takes is a swipe, and the information from your credit card’s magnetic stripe could be on its way to the "dark net." Thieves plant skimming devices at gas stations and ATMs to steal your card info, but according to Delray Beach Police Detective Kimberly Mead, that is only half the battle scammers face.Next, they need to find a card with a magnetic stripe to hold the information."Anything that has a magnetic stripe on the back can be turned into a credit card,” Mead told WPTV. “Hotel keys, gift cards, gas station cards, anything that has a magnetic stripe."This includes lost, stolen and seemingly useless cards thrown away in the trash.“They are just going to be a piece of plastic to someone, but if [scammers] have a credit card number, which they obtained through the internet or from a skimming device, they can input that information onto the magnetic stripe [using a card reader],” Mead said. “Now that card is useful to them again.”Recently, Mead busted a Florida man for reprogramming credit cards with stolen information. “We see this quite frequently,” Mead said.In her most recent case, Mead says she was tipped off when the credit card number on the receipt didn't match the numbers written on the front of the card.Then, using the same type of card reader thieves use to re-encode magnetic stripes, Mead checked the internal data on the man’s credit cards. “When we swiped the magnetic stripe, the number that showed up on the screen did not match the number that was embossed on the front [of the cards],” she said.So what can you do? “This kind of activity goes hand-in-hand with skimming,” the Florida detective said. “Pay attention to the ATMs you’re using, the gas pumps you’re using.”Actively monitor your charges through online and mobile banking apps, and think twice before tossing any card with a magnetic stripe.“Cut it up or shred it,” Mead said. “Don’t just toss it in the trash.”Anyone can purchase a credit card reader. CLEARWATER, Fla. — An 11-foot alligator made an unwanted overnight visit into a Florida home.The Clearwater Police Department said the massive gator smashed a ground-level kitchen window to get inside the home located in the Eagles Landing neighborhood.After finding the alligator, the homeowner called police.Officers said a trapper helped them capture the unwanted visitor.Thankfully, no one was injured; however, the homeowner will need to replace their broken windows. 484
