The COVID-19 pandemic is teaching us important lessons about the next potential infectious disease threat.“That includes things like dealing with the problems that are before us now, things like antibiotic resistance that kills too many Americans every day and preparing for things we don't know about by having good surveillance programs and public health infrastructure,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Infectious Diseases Chief at Tufts Medical Center. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says antibiotic-resistant infections impact nearly 3 million people a year and are responsible for 35,000 deaths. That's less than COVID-19, but there is new evidence the two are colliding.A new CDC report points to an outbreak of a multiple drug-resistant bacteria at a New Jersey hospital already dealing with a surge of COVID-19 patients. From February through July, there were 34 of the bacteria cases. Half were in COVID-19 patients and 10 of them died.At the time, the hospital wasn't able to use the same standard of infection control practices due to capacity, shortages in PPE, medical equipment and staff.“Certainly, having health care workers healthy so they can take care of patients is very important,” said Boucher. “You might have seen that there had been some outbreaks, places across the country that have really impacted the ability to have adequate health care workers take care of patients, and that is the worst thing that could happen. And we know leads to unnecessary deaths.”COVID-19 hospitalizations are higher now than the previous two peaks in April and July.Recruiting additional medical staff is also more difficult now as more hospitals are seeing surges. In the spring, some medical facilities were laying staff off due to fewer patients. The CDC says drug-resistant infections decreased when COVID cases dropped. Basic hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of both. 1908

The FBI issued a warning on Wednesday alerting Americans to scammers using the coronavirus to solicit donations for fraudulent charities.Federal law enforcement officials say they have received reports that scammers are using the pandemic to steal money, personal information or both. The FBI says that often, the fraudsters will use the name of a real charity to conduct their scam. The FBI adds that criminals may spoof their caller ID number to make it appear the call originated from a legitimate charity.“Be careful,” the FBI said. The FBI offered the following advice to Americans:The best way to protect yourself is by doing your research. Here are some tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of a charity fraud:Do your homework when it comes to donations, whether you’re donating through charities, social media, or crowdfunding websites.Look for online reviews of charity organizations or use information from your state’s regulator of charities or from websites like the Better Business Bureau, give.org, charitynavigator.org, or charitywatch.org to check on the legitimacy of charitable organizations. Before donating, ask how much of the donation will go toward the program or cause you want to support. Every organization has administrative costs, and it’s important to understand those structures.Never pay by gift card or wire transfer. Credit cards are safer. After making a donation, be sure to review your financial accounts to ensure additional funds are not deducted or charged.Always do your research before clicking on links purporting to provide information on the virus, purchasing COVID-related products online, or providing your personal information in order to receive money or other benefits. 1724

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult and stressful time for families, but we're seeing one silver lining when it comes to fathers and their kids.Nearly 70% of dads in a recent study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education say they're feeling closer to their kids right now.The dads have had to be home more than usual, but one of the people involved with the study also believes it's helping that dads may be less distracted with work than they usually are. Also, parents' social lives have changed, so they're doing things with their kids they may have done with their friends previously.Dads in the study say they're also getting to know their kids better. More than half say they're spending more time talking to their children about things that are important to them.“I think we're all better parents when we know our kids better,” said Richard Weissbourd, who directs the Making Caring Common Project at Harvard. “I mean it's respectful to enable our kids to really speak, but we also learn a lot about them and it deepens our relationships with them and it also helps us I think in being mentors and guides to them when they make key decisions in their lives.”The Making Caring Common Project is a national effort to make moral and social development priorities in raising kids.Weissbourd is worried there will be a strong pull to return to our normal lives and dads' relationships won't continue in the same way.But you can take steps now to keep those bonds.“I really encourage fathers to establish rituals and routines with their kids now, like if you're going for a walk every weekend with your kid, continue doing that even when the pandemic is over,” said Weissbourd. “If you're playing games with your kid, develop a ritual around playing games with your kids or activities.”He says more fathers are also watching TV with their kids and talking with them about what's going on in the world surrounding the pandemic and the protests. He's hopeful that ritual will continue too. 2008

The Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) is facing a huge undertaking as COVID-19 vaccines roll out to the general public.More than 418,000 healthcare workers and 10 million patients will eventually get the COVID-19 vaccine through the VA.The department received 73,000 doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine this week, and residents and staff at long term communities run by the department are first in line to be inoculated. There are about 17,500 veterans living in VA long-term care facilities across the country, and several thousand more work in those centers. The vaccine could not have arrived sooner for those staff members and patients."I know a lot of VA medical centers are going through COVID surges right now, alongside with their communities," said Dr. Jane Kim, the Chief Consultant for Preventive Medicine at the VA.Most vaccines are mandatory for military members. For now, the COVID-19 vaccine is still voluntary. That's likely due to the limited supply of the vaccine and because it's only under Emergency Use Authorization right now.Still, veteran doctors want to reassure their patients."I got the vaccine yesterday," Kim said. "I had a sore arm yesterday, but my arm feels good today. I feel fine today. I would recommend this vaccine to my family and also my patients when it's available for them and it's their turn."More than 5,500 veteran patients and 87 VA staff members have died of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. That doesn't include state-run veteran's homes. The VA is not responsible for providing COVID-19 vaccines to those state-run veteran's homes. 1596

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their third child Louis Arthur Charles, a choice that confounded expectations.Prince Louis (pronounced Loo-ee) is fifth in line to the British throne, after grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and his two older siblings."The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles," Kensington Palace said in a statement. "The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge. 513
