CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — Officials Friday identified the Marine killed in a rollover crash this week at Camp Pendleton.Officials identified 1st Lt. Hugh C. McDowell, 24, of Washington D.C., as the Marine killed after a light armored vehicle rolled over Thursday at Camp Pendleton. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of people packed into a classroom in Carlsbad Wednesday night, concerned about community safety in the wake of a brutal murder. More than 200 people showed up. Many were forced to listen from the hallway because the room was so crowded. “We don’t feel as safe as we used to,” said Carlsbad resident Charlie Christenson about why he came to the meeting. “I thought it was great to have the forum,” he added. It came more than a week after 64-year-old Marj Gawitt was stabbed to death in her home on Outrigger Lane, a development overlooking the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Two transients were arrested and charged in the murder. Prosecutors say Gawitt was stabbed 50 times and tortured. Still, she managed to call 911 herself and alert police about her assailants. “I’ve been a police officer in Carlsbad for over 28 years, and to my knowledge this is the firs time in that particular community a crime like that has happened,” said Carlsbad police Chief Neil Gallucci. For two hours, Gallucci and other top police officials fielded questions from residents about the murder and the lingering safety concerns it has brought about.Christenson said he came to ask the chief one question. “I asked him if there were any changes to outreach or enforcement in response to this issue and he said no,” said Christenson. “That was disappointing.” But Gallucci said the meeting itself was necessary to get a feel for the issues. “I think having this meeting was a big step forward,” he said. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Camp Pendleton issued an alert Friday for a Marine missing on a recreational backcountry ski trip. 1st Lt. Matthew Kraft left for Kearsarge Pass on the Sierra High Route Feb. 23 and was scheduled to return Mar. 4 or 5 near Bridgeport. His rental car, a gray 2016 2-door Jeep Wrangler has not been found at the trip’s starting point in Independence. 11 law enforcement, federal, and state agencies are searching for Kraft. The Fresno County Sheriff, CHP, and Air National Guard have been conducting aerial searches. Anyone with information is asked to call authorities. 608

CHANDLER, AZ — The Arizona Attorney General’s Office says Mikal Lee Smith, the son of ex-NFL coach and current head of the University of Illinois football program Lovie Smith, has been indicted after a Chandler police investigation accusing him of running a prostitution ring.According to a release, between December 2018 and September 2019, Mikal Smith and Aprel Mae Rasmussen operated and maintained an illegal prostitution enterprise.In one instance, Mikal Smith and Rasmussen allegedly induced and encouraged an adult female victim to “engage in acts of prostitution for over two months.”Mikal Smith reportedly used surveillance and threats of retaliation to keep the victim under his control.It’s unclear how many other victims, if any, were involved. CARMEL VALLEY (KGTV) - A man threatened to shoot a clerk at the Everbowl in Carmel Valley and ran away with cash on Saturday night, San Diego Police said.According to police, an armed man entered the restaurant shortly before 6 p.m. and demanded cash. The clerk gave him an unknown amount of money, and the suspect ran away.The suspect was last seen running through the parking lot. He is described as a white man, 30 to 40 years old, about 5' 11" tall with a medium build.
