HOHHOT, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police said Tuesday they had shot and killed an escaped prisoner and apprehended three others in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     The four escaped on Saturday from the No. 2 Prison in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia, after killing a prison guard, said a spokesman from the regional public security department.     Acting on information from local residents, police surrounded the men in Helin County early Tuesday, after they had hijacked a motor tricycle and taken the woman driver hostage.     Police shot dead Gao Bo, who resisted arrest and injured a police officer with knife, said the spokesman. He had tried to kill himself by cutting his throat with knife and jumping off a building before being captured, the spokesman said.     The hostage suffered minor injuries, he said.     Police began to hunt for the four, aged from 21 to 28, soon after their escape and the prison management issued an appeal through a local television station for information leading to their arrest.     Two of the men were serving suspended death sentences and two were serving life prison terms, said the spokesman without giving details of their convictions.     The public security department of Inner Mongolia said 12,300 police and armed police officers had been deployed to search for the escapees, who were regarded as dangerous. Police searched thousands of hotels, nightclubs and Internet bars, questioned 47,500 people and stopped 24,600 vehicles.     The four prisoners were on the run for only 66 hours before they were apprehended.     "We appreciate the local residents' help in hunting the prisoners," said Zhao Liping, head of the public security department of the region." It's a successful people's war against the criminals."

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday called for tightened prevention measures against A/H1N1 influenza as the country recorded an increasing number of people catching seasonal influenza upon the arrival of winter.     In a visit to a children's hospital in the Chinese capital, Wen said the country faces severe challenges in the prevention and control of A/H1N1 and some areas are likely to have a sharp increase in the number of patients infected by the epidemic.     He said the country is fully confident and capable of doing well the prevention and control work of the A/H1N1 flu and would spare no effort in helping patients, especially those with severe symptoms, to recover. Our visit is to implement the common prospects for peaceful cross-Straits development with pragmatic measures," Liang said.     The CPC and KMT reached an agreement on the common prospects for peaceful cross-Straits development in 2005.

  

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's promise on its carbon dioxide emissions cut target was "a serious and solemn one," said Premier Wen Jiabao here Friday.     Wen made the remarks in a meeting with representatives from India, South Africa, Brazil and the G77 group of developing nations, who were here for consultations with China on climate change issues. The State Council, or the Chinese cabinet, announced Thursday that China was going to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with the level of 2005. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (2nd, R) meets with representatives from India, South Africa, Brazil and the G77 group of developing nations, who are here for consultations with China on climate change issues, in Beijing, China, Nov. 27, 2009.     Wen told the foreign representatives that the Chinese government set down the task plan"based on our own national conditions and long-term interests," and "in the spirit of being responsible for the welfare of all the people in the world."     China's target was made after full scientific research and conformed to reality, the premier noted.     "We need to devote great efforts to reach the target," he said.     Wen called for global cooperation in addressing climate change issues, saying that the developing nations enjoyed common interests in this sector.     China valued the mechanism of consultation with India, Brazil and South Africa, and would increase coordination with the G77 group, he said.     "We will work with all parties concerned to help bring about reasonable and realizable outcome of the upcoming UN climate change conference in Copenhagen," said Wen, who is scheduled to attend the conference next month.     The foreign representatives applauded China's efforts and achievements in tackling climate change issues.     They agreed that developing nations should work together to safeguard common interests and make contribution to coping with this challenge and achieve sustainable development.     Indian Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh, Brazilian Presidential Advisor Marcel Fortuna Biato, and South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Buyelwa Sonjica were here for the ministerial consultations on climate change on Nov. 28.     The Chinese representative to the consultations will be Xie Zhenhua, vice minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission.     Sudan's Lumumba Stanislaus Di-Aping, a representative of the G77, had concluded his consultations with Xie earlier Friday.

  

SHANGHAI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama will start his four-day China visit Sunday in Shanghai, and the highlight of his visit in the eastern city will be broadcast live by Xinhuanet, the online news service of the Xinhua News Agency.     This is Obama's first visit to China since he took office in the White House more than a year ago.     Obama is scheduled to meet with Chinese youth on Monday in Shanghai, during which he will pick up a number of questions out of more than 3,200 put forward by China's Internet users over the past two days.     The whole event will be broadcast live online, according to the Xinhuanet.     Obama will arrive in Beijing on Monday afternoon.
