NEW YORK (AP) — The playwright behind such comedic hits such as "The Odd Couple" and "Plaza Suite," has died. Neil Simon was 91.According to Bill Evans, Simon's longtime friend and the Shubert Organization director of media relations, says the playwright died early Sunday of complications from pneumonia in a Manhattan hospital.Simon was the American theater's most successful and prolific playwright in the second half of the 20th century. He won three regular Tonys, plus one for special achievement, as well as a Pulitzer and the Mark Twain prize for humor.Simon's successes included "The Sunshine Boys," ''Plaza Suite" and "Sweet Charity." NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A company’s plan to retrieve the Titanic’s radio has sparked a debate over whether the famous shipwreck still holds human remains. Lawyers for the U.S. government have raised the question during their ongoing court battle to block the planned expedition. They cite archaeologists who say remains could still be there. The lawyers say RMS Titanic Inc. fails to consider that in its dive plan. But the company says human remains likely would’ve been noticed after roughly 200 dives to the site. The company also says remains would've dissolved in the harsh ocean environment. The luxury ocean liner sank in 1912 after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic. 686
NOGALES, Arizona — Military officials were on the U.S./Mexico border today to talk about adding security in preparation for the migrant caravan.Talking with army soldiers from the DeConcini and Mariposa port of entries, they say, they're taking Customs and Border Protection's lead. They say the Department of Defense has military units out here until December 15th. But that date is mission dependent."Engineering is engineering. Regardless of where we are in the world, whether we're training back at Ft. Hood, Texas, or whether we're in Tucson, Arizona, or Iraq or Afghanistan, we provide capability to whoever we're supporting. And in this case, we're supporting the Customs and Border Protection," said Lt. Col. Chad Caldwell, the 62nd Engineer Battalion commander.These soldiers are a part of the 5,000 troops near the country's southwest border to prepare for the expected arrival of the migrant caravan. Last week, they started placing razor wire above the border fence, a task that is not yet complete. And yesterday, the army helped close two lanes at the DeConcini port of entry."It has been a challenge. It is not a standard mission-set to be trained for back in Ft. Hood, but as Army engineers, our job is to solve difficult problems for whoever we're supporting," said Caldwell."Weld the pickets up to the fence, run the c-wire with barbed-wire underneath it, and strap it to it. Our role is to support the CBP and do whatever they ask us to do," said Sgt. Douglas Hughes, the Platoon Sgt. for the 104th Engineer Construction Company.There is no official word, yet, if they plan on keeping these reinforcements in place after the caravan has arrived, if it does. NEW YORK (AP) — Workers have installed nearly 200 glittering Waterford crystal triangles on Times Square's New Year's Eve ball in preparation for a pandemic-limited celebration. The ball is a 12-foot geodesic sphere covered with more than 2,000 crystal triangles of various sizes. Some new crystals are swapped in every year. This year's addition features a new “Gift of Happiness” design represented by a sunburst of bright cuts radiating outward. The ball blazing with more than 32,000 LED lights will be dropped at 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve to ring in 2021. 571
NEW YORK (AP) — The credit card companies Visa and Mastercard say they will no longer allow their customers to use the cards to charge for services on the pornographic website Pornhub. The website, which claimed 42 billion visits last year, has been accused of showing videos that depict rape, underage and nonconsensual sex — most prominently in an investigation published last weekend in The New York Times. Mastercard says it has terminated its relationship with Pornhub after its own investigation confirmed violations of standards. Visa says it is still investigating, but suspended use of the card on the site. In a statement to The Associated Press on December 6, Pornhub said it is "irresponsible and flagrantly untrue," but after Visa and Mastercard announced their decision to terminate its relationship with the website, Pornhub called the decisions 'exceptionally disappointing.' 899
