It’s part of a long-term effort to protect the trains and tracks running along the fragile cliffs. Some residents say it’s not a permanent solution. "Anyone that's ridden on the trains through Del Mar… knows you have a great view there but that's because the train tracks are fairly close to the Del Mar bluffs."A little too close for comfort. Heavy rainfall this winter triggered several Del Mar bluff collapses, reminding the county just how fragile they are. "What was very tragic and unfortunate in Encinitas was loss of life. Bluffs in Del Mar had a number of failures just this past winter. And we were very lucky here was nobody on top or below when those bluffs failed."But Jim Linthicum, SANDAG's Director of Mobility, says right now the train tracks are safe. “Had a number of projects since 2003 to stabilize, but public doesn't normally see because they are buried piles 65 feet deep."Now they're in phase 4, the million dollar project includes repairing seawalls, storm drains and drainage channels. “We're even doing drainage on side, drainage holes, drain water out of bluffs to reduce pressure." "This is a short-term fix, you're trying to slow down the inevitable."Geologist Pat Abbott says the problem is a hard one to solve, but believes the current plan is just a band-aid. "The easiest thing to do, what has been done, is let's do a band-aid now and pass it on to the next generation as if it will be simpler for them to solve than us."Regional planners say they are thinking long term, hoping to construct a tunnel after the year 2050. But that will be costly and complex, so SANDAG says it will do what's necessary to protect what's here now. Defense attorneys for the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre entered a plea of not guilty Thursday to federal charges and requested a jury trial.Robert Bowers, 46, walked into court in wrist and ankle restraints Thursday, his second court appearance this week, after a federal grand jury indicted him on 44 federal charges in last weekend's slaying of 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue.During the arraignment, Bowers watched prosecutors and nodded periodically. DENVER — Doctors are reporting a rare polio-like illness in children is once again spiking around the country, including in Colorado. Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a spinal disease the can leave children with permanent paralysis. Health officials report 14 cases in Colorado so far in 2018.It's believed AFM is connected to enterovirus.The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said of the 14 cases diagnosed so far, 11 people tested positive for enterovirus A71, one tested positive for enterovirus D68 and two people tested negative for any type of enterovirus."While all the patients were hospitalized, nearly all have fully recovered. There have been no deaths," CDPHE's Shannon Barbare said in a statement.Children's Hospital Colorado saw a cluster of AFM cases in 2014, which led to more research into the rare disease. In 2016, KMGH profiled Kiko Violante, a 3-year-old boy who was diagnosed with AFM. At first all he had were typical cold-like symptoms."Runny nose, cough and for about a week he was like that," said Laura Violante. She wasn't too concerned — until he started having trouble walking."He just wasn’t walking the way he used to. I had to really support him," she said. "And then he couldn’t look at me. He started doing this rigid movement in his neck, and he couldn’t really turn."Colorado has previously had outbreaks of the less-common enterovirus types. Enterovirus D68 sickened 11 people with AFM. Enterovirus A71 caused similar outbreaks to this year's in 2003 and 2005, the CDPHE said."There is no vaccination or specific treatment for enteroviruses. People with mild illness typically need treatment only for symptoms," Barbare said in a statement. "However, some illnesses caused by EV-A71 and EV-D68 can be severe enough to require hospitalization."The CDC has a web page devoted to AFM.
