China-Africa cooperation is an important part of the South-South cooperation," said He Yafei, China's ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva.Addressing a forum on Africa's peace and development, He said China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has been always supporting and participating in peacekeeping operations in Africa.Since 1990, China has participated in 12 UN peacekeeping operations in Africa, providing more than 10,000 personnel. Now there are more than 1,600 military staff and civilian police from China in Africa, he said.China supports the conflict-resolution efforts in Africa, participating actively in mediating activities in Darfur, Sudan and other parts of the continent, he added.In addition, China has actively joined the international anti- pirates task force patrolling the waters off Somalia, and made important contribution on keeping the security of the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters.On economic and social fronts, China, for over 50 years, has provided assistance to Africa to the best of its capability, according to the ambassador.China has made 7.8 billion U.S. dollars of direct investments in Africa by 2008. By the end of 2009, China had built more than 900 infrastructure and public welfare projects, sent 17,000 medical personnel to 47 African countries, where they had treated 200 million patients, provided over 20,000 government scholarships.In order to further strengthen the friendly cooperation between China and Africa, to jointly meet the challenge of economic globalization and to promote common development, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was established by China and friendly African countries in 2000, the ambassador said.Since its establishment, the Forum has held one summit and four ministerial conferences, with Chinese leaders announcing a lot of measures to strengthen cooperation with Africa and support African development."This year marks the 10th anniversary of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. NINGBO, Zhejiang, May 16 (Xinhua) -- European customers benefit from Chinese exports and all parties should work to build a fair, level playing field in international trade, said a senior official of the European Commission in an exclusive interview with Xinhua here on Sunday."We are working to create a level playing field which gives opportunity, diversified choices and good prices to our customers," said Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, in a forum on the sidelines of the Expo 2010 in Shanghai.Kroes said international trade was a bit comparable to road traffic. "Most of us respect the rules of the game, but if one or two are not respecting the rules and the red lights, there will be an accident," she said.In the case of China-EU trade relations, "most of the parties in the games are respecting the rules, and only one percent is not taking the rules into account, and that is the subject that we called anti-dumping," she said.Recently, China-EU trade relations were marred by a dispute over imports of certain Chinese-made shoes with EU ministers voting last December to extend import duties on Chinese shoes for another 15 months.Earlier last month, the European Commission rejected a complaint by China to the World Trade Organization that EU's anti-dumping tariffs on imports of Chinese shoes breached WTO rules."Making shoes is a traditional skill of my village and we are good at making shoes. BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said Saturday it would assemble more than 1,100 engineers and workers from across the country to dig over 1,600 wells in the country's southwest, where a severe drought is likely to continue.All of those professionals would be arriving at the droughty areas by April 1 and the first batch set off on Saturday, said the MLR in a statement on its website.More than 1,600 wells would be drilled, providing 200,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day for 2 million people and 1 million head of livestock, said the ministry, hoping to finish digging 1,400 of the wells by May 10.So far, the MLR has already dug over 100 wells, which can produce drinking water for more than 100,000 people.The drought, which has left southwest China suffering since last Autumn, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological agencies.It has left 18 million residents and 11.7 million heads of livestock in the region with drinking water shortages and caused direct economic losses of 23.7 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars), data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.
