DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A horse died Monday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the fourth death at the track since the start of the summer racing season in July. “We are saddened to confirm that Bri Bri, an unraced three-year-old filly, was humanely euthanized today after suffering a serious injury to her pelvis during training,” the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club read in a statement. “We are deeply sorry for her and her human connections.” Emergency personnel and track veterinarians responded to the emergency immediately, said DMTC officials. Del Mar was among the nation’s safest racetracks last year, but experienced the deaths of two horses on the second day of the season. Charge A Bunch, trained by Carla Gaines, ran headfirst into Carson Valley, trained by Bob Baffert. Another of Baffert’s horses, Bowl of Soul, had a fetlock injury and was euthanized less than two weeks later. Bri Bri was trained by Jim Cassidy. Track officials said they will meet with him to discuss the matter. “Del Mar has implemented a series of safety and welfare reforms over the last several racing seasons, including the creation of an independent five-member panel to review all entries. To date, there have been no fatal injuries during racing in the current summer meet,” said DMTC officials. 1284

Delegates at conventions typically describe convention week as one of the most memorable times of their lives. After all, it's the only opportunity in which a seemingly average American can be invited to fancy parties with governors and senators. This year, during a virtual convention, there are no parties or meetups, which made us wonder what it has been like for delegates so far.A BIT OF A DISAPPOINTMENT Shaun Sindleman spent months running to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, representing the state of Colorado. He was looking forward to being on the convention floor and, as a Bernie Sanders supporter, being persuaded to vote for Joe Biden. "I was just like let down. This is my first time running as a delegate. It’s probably my last time running as a delegate," Sindleman said. 816

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — While a hotly-debated gun show is returning to the Del Mar Fairground, its future remains clouded after a recently signed law. The Crossroads of the West gun show returned to the fairgrounds Saturday, two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning the sale of guns and ammo at the venue. That law doesn't take effect until 2021, allowing the gun show to continue until then."It's been a mainstay for 30 years in San Diego and a small group of extremists tried to get it canceled and were successful for just a few months last year, but fortunately the courts stepped in and said, 'no you can't discriminate against a group based on what they described as their culture," Michael Schwartz, executive director of San Diego County Gun Owners, told reporters Saturday. "The fight's not over."RELATED: California adopts broadest US rules for seizing gunsThat fight will continue in a year. Assembly Bill 893, introduced in February by State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-78), argues California shouldn't have a role in facilitating gun sales. Gov. Newsome signed the bill last October."People have the right to continue to buy guns at private establishments," Gloria said shortly after the bill's signing. "The state just shouldn't have a role in facilitating the flow of guns into neighborhoods where children are killed." Protesters are expected outside of the show Saturday to counter gun advocates."They are coming back to finish off our families by calling their gun shows ‘family friendly,’" Rose Ann Sharp, founder of NeverAgainCA, said. "It gives a perverse new meaning to 'women and children first.' For seven years the NRA has blocked any national laws to protect all citizens from gun violence."RELATED: Del Mar gun shows can continue for now, U.S. district court judge rulesAdvocates for the show say the event is meant to promote gun safety and curb violence."Gun shows are not the place where gun violence is created," Crossroads President Tracy Olcott says. "We're the ones who are educating about gun safety and I think when you have an environment where you can talk about it and educate people, I think that's an important part of curbing gun violence."In September 2018, the Del Mar Fairgrounds Board of Directors voted to suspend the Crossroads of the West show until the state developed new safety policies for gun shows. Crossroads appealed the suspension and was granted the right to return in June 2019.The show's contract runs through 2020.Schwartz admits they don't know what will happen to the show after the next year, but they're hopeful the court system will rule in their favor once again."We believe there is going to be some kind of court decision and there is the possibility that it will be delayed and have to move its way up through the court system," Schwartz said. "But we're very confident that the court's going to see that this type of discrimination against this group of people — that they simply consider undesirable — is not right. "The fairgrounds is a state-owned, regional asset and just because one city decides they don't like a culture, that doesn't mean that they can kick them out of town ... Del Mar doesn't get to dictate who they like and who they dislike." 3252

DEL MAR (KGTV) -- You may have heard of power yoga, hot yoga or goat yoga, but now there’s a first-of-its kind yoga studio in Del Mar offering a high-tech take on the ancient exercise regimen.VibeFlow Yoga at One Paseo is billed as the world’s first yoga studio to utilize vertical vibration plates built into the floor. The vibrations are designed to create a more efficient workout by recruiting more muscle fibers.“When the plates come on, it creates G-forces,” said founder Billy Borja. “What that does is create an unstable environment to the body. Now the body is going all-hands-on-deck and now it starts to recruit a lot more muscles that often lie dormant when we exercise.”Borja, a veteran fitness entrepreneur, opened San Diego’s first Orangetheory Fitness.RELATED: Traumatic brain injury survivors healing through yogaHe said the plates, which vibrate 20 to 60 times a second, can help alleviate joint and muscle pain. The technology was first developed by the Soviets during the space race in 1960s to preserve bone-mineral density and muscle mass in cosmonauts.“Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NHL, the UFC and the US military train athletes on these plates because it increases performance, increases their vertical leap and power training, and increases or improves recovery,” he said. One study found whole-body vibration improved vertical jumping by nearly 4 percent and power output in a vertical leg press by 7 percent. Studies in rats have suggested it can enhance muscle strength and counteract muscle loss, although some experts have warned that excessive exposure to vibration plates can upset the digestive tract.RELATED: Yoga poses bring new purpose for veteranBorja said new members begin with a low vibration setting of 20 hertz and take several classes before moving to higher settings. In the typically zen environment of a yoga studio, the plates are somewhat loud. VibeFlow participants wear noise-canceling headphones that broadcast music and the instructor’s voice.“I was skeptical in the very beginning,” said Yelena Resnick, who has been taking classes for a few months. “Having the headsets on, it’s a different experience.”“You have your headphones on. You have your music. The lights are kind of dim. You concentrate more on yourself,” she added. 2295

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ford and Volkswagen will work together to develop a small city van, a larger cargo van, a small pickup truck and an electric vehicle as part of their global alliance announced last year. The companies on Wednesday announced some details of what the venture will yield, with the city van created by VW and a 1-ton cargo van engineered by Ford to be sold by both companies. Also, VW will make a small pickup built on the underpinnings of Ford’s Ranger, and Ford will build an electric vehicle for Europe based on VW’s modular design, the companies said. The automakers announced the alliance last July amid a string of industry partnerships designed to share the costs of developing new technologies.“In light of the Covid 19 pandemic and its impacts on the global economy, more than ever it is vital to set up resilient alliances between strong companies,” said Volkswagen Group CEO Dr. Herbert Diess. “This collaboration will efficiently drive down development costs, allowing broader global distribution of electric and commercial vehicles, and enhance the positions of both companies.”“This alliance comes at a time of tremendous enthusiasm about the intersection of increasingly intelligent, connected vehicles in an ever-smarter world,” said Ford CEO Jim Hackett. “This creates a huge opportunity to innovate and solve many of the world’s transportation challenges and deliver extraordinary benefits to customers – even as companies need to be selective about how they use their cash.” 1517
