TROY, Mich. — A man from Warren who spent months fighting COVID-19 was finally released from the hospital.Zahid Raza was released Friday from Beaumont Hospital, where he'd been fighting COVID-19 since March.He said he still has lasting effects like wheezing, and because of the virus, he's also having problems with his kidneys.Zahid went into Beaumont Hospital in Troy on March 30 because he couldn't breathe. He said one of his last memories was hearing medical staff say they were using the last available ventilator on him.He spent the next several weeks in a coma — even his 65th birthday. URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – As colleges and universities are tasked with safely beginning classes, researchers at one school are ramping up testing. But they're putting away the nasal swab in exchange for a test they say can be scaled to perform thousands of tests a day with turnaround in just hours.College junior Alliyah Rumbolt-Lemond is already back on campus and regularly testing for COVID-19.“I know if you have in-person classes, you're going to be on campus, you have to get tested twice a week,” she says.The college junior is one of the more than 51,000 students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign returning to school during the pandemic, posing a logistical challenge for administrators.“It was very daunting,” said U of I chemistry professor Marty Burke.He was part of the team of university researchers who developed a two-step saliva-based COVID-19 test to tackle the problem.“We called this our ‘target, test and tell’ initiative, overall collectively described as a ‘Shield.’”The Shield Initiative needed to be scalable, and unlike the four-step nasopharyngeal swab tests, not vulnerable to supply chain bottlenecks.“It's a very powerful concept that if we can get to that fast, frequent testing, we really could get control of the situation,” said Burke.A quick stop on route to class or work, integrated with local health care agencies, students receive results on an app within hours, not days.“It takes about five to ten minutes to submit your saliva sample and then the results are typically back on your phone within three to six hours,” said Burke.The university’s veterinary school diagnostic lab has been converted into a full-scale human COVID-19 testing facility. It’s capable of processing some 10 to 20,0000 saliva tests per day.“I want to hang out with friends and do it the right way, like following CDC guidelines,” said Alliyah. “But I feel more comfortable saying ‘hey when's the last time you got tested?’”A total of 20 testing sites with 40 stations are set up across campus. Users can even get exposure notifications if they’ve been in contact with someone who tests positive.“If someone tests positive then same day that person is isolated,” said Burke. “Which we think is critical for ultimately the efficacy of the testing program.”They’ve published a pre-print paper on their COVID-19 saliva test, which is undergoing peer review and are seeking FDA approval.For students like Alliyah, it’s one-stop piece of mind.“It makes you feel like I'm safer on campus because even though we only have to get tested twice a week you can get tested every day the testing site is open if you wanted to.” 2653

(KGTV) -- The avocado boom in Mexico has pulled parts of the country out of poverty in just 10 years, but the prosperity there turns deadly as money-hungry cartels take hold of the market. While there's brutality below the border, there's a history in the homegrown in San Diego. "San Diego is the biggest producer of avocados in the state of California," said farmer Noel Stehly. 10News took a trip to Stehly Farms in North County where you'll find more than 250 acres of the flourishing fruit. The land has been in Stehly's farm for decades. "Those that buy California, great, but if you want it in November, you want a Haas avocado, its not going to come from California," said Stehly. They're competing with American growers in production and now threatening their workers. "I have a lot of my employees that work here right now in Michoacan," said Stehly. "They’re home for the holiday, they’ll come back over the next couple of weeks and my last words to them are, ‘Just be careful. Just really be careful".Michocan is the heart of the violence, where gangs robbed USDA food inspectors at gunpoint in August. "You hear the stories of what goes on down there," said Stehly. "They live in these pueblos that are in the growing regions that are dangerous. They’re absolutely dangerous."The cartels are at war with themselves while threatening growers and police departments with kidnapping, extortion, and murder. "I just worry about them they’re part of my family." said Stehly. "Most of them were at my wedding and have been here long enough to know every one of my kids. Stehly said the water that feeds his farm is not what it used to be. The water now comes from the Colorado River instead of Northern California. "I don’t have enough well water to irrigate everything on my farm," said Stehly. "The price of water has gone up exponentially. Our water system in the state of California is broken and nobody's gonna fix it."The composition of the water has also changed with high levels of salt killing off his crop. The water issue is causing production on the farm to go down. "I do sell a lot less, I grow a lot less," said Stehly. "It's sad. It’s sad to have drying trees on your property."For this second-generation farmer, it's personal. "This property is special. It’s a labor of love now. It paid a lot of bills," said Stehly. "It's an important part of us.
