CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A newly discovered comet is streaking past Earth, providing a stunning nighttime show after buzzing the sun and expanding its tail.Comet Neowise was spotted by the NASA space telescope bearing that name in March.Since then, the comet — called comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE— has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, observatories, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The celestial snowball swept within Mercury's orbit a week ago. Its close proximity to the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris tail.NASA says the comet is about 3 miles across. "From its infrared signature, we can tell that it is about 5 kilometers [3 miles] across, and by combining the infrared data with visible-light images, we can tell that the comet's nucleus is covered with sooty, dark particles left over from its formation near the birth of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago," said Joseph Masiero, NEOWISE deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The comet will be visible across the Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it heads back toward the outer solar system.People wishing to catch a glimpse of the glowing comet can spot it as it swings through the inner solar system, but its nearness to the Sun creates some observing challenges. As it speeds away from the Sun, NASA says the comet will begin to make its appearance in the evening sky shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12, depending on local conditions.“Observers might be able to see the comet's central core, or nucleus, with the naked eye in dark skies; using binoculars will give viewers a good look at the fuzzy comet and its long, streaky tail,” said NASA. 1759

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Carlsbad is known for The Flower Fields, Legoland, golf, and its family-friendly beaches, but the Village by the Sea is also home to several hidden gems. "Most people have seen us on top of the hill, on top of the Flower Fields. Certain times of the day, you might notice a beautiful crystal piece, sparkling at the top of our building. Still, most people aren't aware they can come and visit, it's probably one of the best-kept secrets in Carlsbad," said Cathryn Ramirez, Director of Global Business Development at the Gemological Institute of America. The Institute is the global headquarters of the GIA. The non-profit is home to a museum, research lab, and school. Students come from around the world to study gems and jewelry design. "We have not only our education campus here, but we have our laboratory where we do grading of gemstones, we do research here, and it's our corporate offices as well," said Ramirez. The GIA houses more than a thousand gems and pieces of jewelry. Tours are available by reservation. Another one of Carlsbad's best-kept secrets is a short walk from the GIA. "It's off the beaten track. Everyone knows where Legoland is, Legoland is a great attraction here in Carlsbad or the Flower Fields, and then we're tucked in right between those two large attractions. We both love and are challenged by the term "hidden gem," said B.J Morgan. Morgan is the marketing manager of the Museum of Making Music. "People can expect to see all the way back to the 1890's at the turn of the century, what life was like when those instrument innovations were taking place, what music was being made on those instruments and what it was like to walk into your local retail store," said Morgan. The museum hosts several concerts a month featuring local and national artists. There's a field trip program for kids and a chance for adults to learn an instrument and join a band."I love hearing about people who are inspired to make music and to play, anybody who comes to the museum doesn't have to be a musician, I think we have an innate appreciation for music," said Morgan.Like much of San Diego County, Carlsbad is home to miles of hiking trails. The Calavera Hills Nature preserve is a 110-acre site that includes more than four miles of hiking and biking trails. It's also a habitat for several threatened or endangered species.Visitors may not realize it's also home to a volcano."Millions of years ago, there was a volcano, it's now extinct. Obviously, it's no threat to anyone, but it's a beautiful place to go visit," said Rosanne Humphrey, Coordinator for the city's Habitat Management program. Calavera Hills is home to a volcanic plug, one of only a few in Southern California. "Which means the volcanic rock that came up through the opening, solidified and over time, it just became inactive, and now all that's left is pretty much a rocky mountain," said Humphrey. 2928

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) – Police are urging residents to not take matters into their own hands in light of the death of a woman on a popular hiking trail in Carlsbad. In the days since the Nov. 23 stabbing death of Lisa Thorborg at the Hosp Grove Trail, Carlsbad police said some residents have been on the Nextdoor app encouraging others to visit encampment sites to look for the suspect. In a Facebook post, the Carlsbad Police Department asked that citizens not get involved and instead report any tips they may have to police.Police are assuring the community that they are actively investigating Thorborg’s death and searching for the suspect. So far, a tip involving a man seen in the area around the time of the incident has not panned out.RELATED STORIES:Carlsbad neighbors honor murdered woman by finishing her hikeWoman stabbed to death on Carlsbad trail identifiedWoman found dead on Carlsbad hiking trail 921

CAMDEN, N.J. – Across the river from Philadelphia sits the nearly 200-year-old city of Camden, New Jersey, at one time called “the most dangerous city in America.”“This city has been riddled with drugs,” said resident Mark Hansen.About 74,000 people live there. Seven years ago, amid a budget crisis and a spiking murder rate, the mayor and police chief, as well as local and state lawmakers and then-Governor Chris Christie, among others, joined together and disbanded the city’s police department.“We had 67 murders in 2012, which put the murder rate higher than some third world nations. So, a change had to come,” said Louis Cappelli, Jr., Camden County’s freeholder director, which is a job similar to a county commissioner. It’s a position Cappelli also held when the city police department ceased to exist and was replaced with a brand-new county police department.“We started with two main objectives,” Cappelli said. “Number one was to reduce the number of crime victims and number two is to make the residents of the city feel safe.”So, what happened to the city police officers? With the union dismantled, all of them -- from the chief on down -- had to reapply for their positions with the Camden County Police Department (CCPD).Not everyone got their job back, but Capt. Zsakhiem James did.“Couldn't see myself being a cop anywhere else,” he said. “This is my home.”However, the policing Capt. James knew then underwent a complete change. All the officers went through new training – focusing foremost on community policing and de-escalation, where the use of force becomes a last resort.“We stress interaction with people on a positive note. We reward that,” Capt. James said. “As opposed to just the traditional rewards for drug and gun arrests and solving violent crimes, we also reward officers for being integral parts of the community.”In the years since the changes, according to the CCPD, Camden’s crime rate fell. Since 2014, violent crime is down 36% and murders are down a whopping 72%.Not so fast said Camden County NAACP President Kevin Barfield.“Crime statistics throughout the state, in the United States, have went down over the years,” Barfield said. “So, can we truly contribute that to policing or a police model?”He is also concerned that the county police department lacks diversity in the ranks. Minorities make up about half the force and few are part of the higher ranks, in a city where 95% of the residents are either African American or Hispanic.“The problem is that the police department does not reflect the community that it serves,” Barfield said. That matters a lot, according to Dr. Nyeema Watson, head of civic engagement at Rutgers University’s Camden campus.“We still want to see broad swaths of diversity in all ways - because until there is a deep cultural shift, not only in policing but against systematic oppression of blacks, we're still going to have a fear and mistrust of the police,” Dr. Watson said.County officials say they are working to address that issue but add that the changes in policing in Camden shouldn’t be discounted. As for cities considering revamping their own police departments, each had some advice to offer.“Give the community the opportunity to vote,” said the NAACP’s Kevin Barfield. “When we change things, we need to make sure that those who are most vulnerable, that we still make sure that they have a voice.”For freeholder Louis Cappelli, what happened in Camden may not apply everywhere.“It's not one size fits all,” he said. “What we're doing here works well for us. So, you have to mold it and craft it to the needs and particular circumstances of your city.”Dr. Nyeema Watson cautions that change takes time and hard work.“This isn't going to happen overnight,” she said. “So, this is a long haul that communities will really have to engage in.”All are words born of experience from those who’ve been there. 3904
