The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments. Shane Harris, president of the People’s Alliance for Justice, and other San Diego leaders held a news conference after a meeting with UT publisher Jeff Light.San Diego Union Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen created a picture of authors James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, and actor Jussie Smollett, with the title “Famous African American Story Tellers," according to Harris' email. The image was published Friday, Harris said."It was egregious to us all," Harris said at his news conference.Smollett is accused of falsely reporting being attacked by two masked men in Chicago. He reportedly told police his attackers yelled racial and anti-gay slurs and referenced President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, according to the Associated Press.Harris demanded last week that Smollett be fired from his role in the show, "Empire."Monday, Harris said Breen apologized for the cartoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of the sea's most beautiful creatures in one of the world's largest habitats for the animal.The aquarium's new permanent exhibition "Seadragons and Seahorses" featuring Weedy and Leafy seadragons and several species of seahorses and pipefish.At the center of the exhibit will sit one of the world's largest seadragon habitats in the world, measuring 18 feet wide, 9 feet tall and containing 5,375 gallons of water, according to the aquarium.The exhibit takes guests into the lives of seadragons and seahorses, showcasing the sea life in a habitat designed to create the ideal environment for them to breed. Guests will learn how to observe the animals like scientists, catch distinguishing features, and identify courting and mating behaviors.The exhibit also gives visitors a peek into the Birch Aquariums Husbandry Team working to ensure the species thrives. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pride Month comes to a close, the San Diego Unified School District is working to make sure LGBTQ students feel supported year-round. The district's curriculum is becoming more inclusive. School can be a tough time for many students, including those who identify with the LGBTQIA community."In a 2017 report, a national study, 82% of our LGBTQ students reported hearing anti-LGBTQ remarks," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "Seven in 10 reported being called names or threatened during their school day."Gloria spearheaded Assembly Bill 493. It would mandate LGBTQ identity training for educators, grades 7-12. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law last fall.Although school is out for summer break, the San Diego Unified School District is showing its support. The Pride and Transgender flags, among others, were raised outside of the district's office.SDUSD has implemented a curriculum that will help teachers and students. Each module contains four lessons. It comes equipped with terminology and LGBTQIA history."What we found out as a district, is that these students are hearing about these issues and these people for the first time because a lot of our educators have been ill-prepared to have these discussions in classrooms," says Ebonee Weathers with the Youth Advocacy Dept.Weathers also notes that it's important for educators to build relationships and empower students, so they feel safe and comfortable in school settings. 1478
