BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The elderly have a difficult time with multi-tasking as a study suggests that older brains behave differently when it comes to switching between two tasks, according to media reports on Tuesday.Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) to analyze brain activity in 20 people over age 60 by asking them to contemplate outdoor photos shown briefly. Then the elderly were presented with the picture of a face and asked to determine its gender and age, before being asked to recall details from the original scene they viewed.Researchers then compared their results to a similar experiment with 20 younger adults and found the brains of older subjects were less capable of disengaging from the interruption and reestablishing the neural connections necessary to switch back to focusing on the original memory."Unlike younger individuals, older adults failed to both disengage from the interruption and re-establish functional connections associated with the disrupted memory network," write Wesley C. Clapp of the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study, published in the online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sheds new lights into a growing body of studies showing that one's ability to move from one task to another in quick succession becomes more difficult with age.

WASHINGTON, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of young adults in the United States with high blood pressure may be much higher than previously reported, according to a new study by researchers at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill.Researchers analyzed data on more than 14,000 men and women between 24 and 32 years old in 2008 from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, known as Add Health. They found 19 percent had elevated blood pressure, also referred to as hypertension. Only about half of the participants with elevated blood pressure had ever been told by a health-care provider that they had the condition."The findings are significant because they indicate that many young adults are at risk of developing heart disease, but are unaware that they have hypertension," said Quynh Nguyen, a doctoral student at UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health and the study's lead author. Hypertension is a strong risk factor for stroke and coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death for adults in the United States. The findings were published this week in the journal Epidemiology.Kathleen Mullan Harris, Add Health's principal investigator and a co-author of the paper, said the findings were noteworthy because they were from the first nationally representative, field- based study of blood pressure to focus on young adults."The message is clear," said Harris. "Young adults and the medical professionals they visit shouldn't assume they're not old enough to have high blood pressure. This is a condition that leads to chronic illness, premature death and costly medical treatment."

BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance (MOF) said Monday it had allocated 28.23 billion yuan (4.27 billion U.S. dollars) to assure retired enterprise employees receive their pensions before the arrival of the Spring Festival. The State Council, or the Cabinet, decided at an executive meeting last December to raise the retired enterprise employees' pension about 10 percent from 2010 levels, or about 140 yuan per person per month in 2011.The MOF also said local governments had issued 10.24 billion yuan of festival subsidies to 85.97 million people. The Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar New Year is a time for family reunions in China. It falls on Feb. 3 this year.

MOSCOW, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo held talks here on Monday, discussing prospects for the development of cooperation between the two countries.Medvedev and Dai Bingguo discussed the development of Russian- Chinese bilateral cooperation and interaction on the international arena. The Russian president said the Sino-Russian strategic partnership of coordination is developing further in all aspects, as the leaders of the two nations kept close contact during last year and cooperation in the economic and trade sphere has been deepened.Russia sees China as its closest partner, a position that will never be changed, Medvedev stressed.Russia is willing to work together with China to promote all- around cooperation and coordination on international and regional issues, Medvedev said.He said the strategic security talks between Russia and China, a major goal of Dai's current visit, have served as an important channel for bilateral coordination and exchanges, and played a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral strategic mutual trust.Dai Bingguo, who arrived in Moscow Sunday for a three-day visit, said that the first ten years of the 21st century had been important for Sino-Russian relations.China attaches great importance to the strategic coordination with Russia and is willing to work with Russia to develop their strategic partnership of coordination at a higher stage, the Chinese state councilor said.

BRASILIA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- A nationwide program aimed at providing internet access to 80 percent of the country's population by 2014 is forging ahead in Brazil, Communications Minister Paulo Bernardo said on Tuesday. The National Broadband Plan (PNBL), with participation of 13 ministries, is coordinated by Bernardo, who explained details about the project on Tuesday along with Joao Santana, president of Telebras, the state-owned enterprise responsible for managing the project. The authorities have criticized companies that offer internet service for failing to spread internet use in Brazil, offering an expensive service with prices amounting to about 50 U.S. dollars monthly, inaccessible to low-income families."We ended 2010 with 34 percent of Brazilian households with Internet access, and service is also very poor. Almost half of connections are of 256 mbps. We are out-of-date, with the aggravating circumstance that the connections are very expensive," Bernardo said.To speed up the process, the government started negotiating with concessionaire phone companies to improve the service quality and lower the price to about 30 reais (18 dollars), which would allow 80 percent of the population to access internet."During (former president) Lula da Silva's government, we developed a program to interconnect all schools with internet access, but we also want the private sector to do its share," he said.
