SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say they are taking aggressive measures to contain a flu outbreak at San Diego's migrant shelter. At least 16 migrants have shown flu-like symptoms; all were recently flown to San Diego from Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three migrants tested positive with a rapid influenza test."In order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease we've become more aggressive in treating everyone with symptoms, regardless of when those symptoms started," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County.RELATED: Flu outbreak sickens over 30 migrants at border centerBefore being admitted to the shelter, migrants undergo medical screenings.Migrants with flu-like symptoms are being isolated off-site in hotel rooms, along with their family members who are receiving preventative medicine.On Thursday, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher expressed their continued frustration with the federal government's handling of the migrant crisis. "Had we not taken these steps these migrant families would have been released by ICE at bus stops or transit centers without the medical screenings, without the treatment, without the attention, and without the help and support that we have provided. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County supervisors and health officials say the region's number of community outbreaks has exceeded its threshold prompting a pause on future business reopenings.Thursday, community outbreaks rose to eight from June 11-17. A community outbreak is considered three or more confirmed cases from the same place.The community outbreaks were linked to three businesses, two restaurants, one private residence, one campground, and one social club, according to Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten. "When people come together and are within 6 feet of each other without facial coverings it's bound to happen."As things open up and people think that they can go back to the pre-COVID-19 existence, we cannot."Three of the eight outbreaks could fall off the county's metrics on Friday and bring the county below the threshold once again.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the following actions would be taken in response:The county will pause implementing statewide guidance on additional reopenings, not including Friday's planned reopenings of nail salons and other personal care services; andThe county would begin targeted enforcement on entities that are not following health orders.The locations of the county's eight outbreaks were not detailed. Fletcher said revealing which businesses had outbreaks could jeopardize contact tracing reporting and businesses cooperating.
