As millions of Americans have been without work amid the pandemic, nearly 12 million people will lose unemployment benefits on December 26, according to the Century Foundation.The Century Foundation estimates that 7.3 million Americans will exhaust benefits from the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. The federal program extended unemployment benefits for millions of Americans who otherwise would not have received state unemployment benefits.According to the Century Foundation, 4.6 million Americans will lose benefits through the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program on December 26. The 4.6 million Americans is in addition to the 3.5 million workers who will have lost PEUC benefits by then.“Congress has stared down major expirations of jobless benefits multiple times during the Great Recession and previous economic cycles,” the Century Foundation said. “Policy makers have been more comfortable with enacting temporary extended benefits programs with more predictable costs rather than improving the automatic stabilizers in (extended benefits) EB."While millions of Americans are set to lose benefits, there remains ongoing debate on Capitol Hill to provide some form of economic stimulus. BAKERFIELD, Calif. - An Oildale, Calif. 11-year-old tried to kill himself after his tablet was taken away, according to court documents obtained by Scripps affiliate KERO-TV.The documents show Kern County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Woodrow Avenue Sunday evening for reports of an attempted suicide.The boy's mother told deputies she found her son hanging in his bedroom closet by a sweater.The mother said she pulled him from the makeshift noose and called 911. Deputies performed CPR when they got there and the boy was then taken to the hospital for further treatment. Authorities say a resident who suspected a man was drunk and got behind the wheel flagged down an officer, who was later shot and killed during the traffic stop.Stanislaus County sheriff's Sgt. Tom Letras told the Modesto Bee newspaper Friday night that the resident didn't see Cpl. Ronil Singh pull over the vehicle but heard the gunshots minutes later.Gustavo Perez Arriaga was captured Friday after a manhunt following Singh's killing Wednesday. Authorities say he was in the country illegally and was fleeing back to his native Mexico.Seven other people have been arrested on suspicion of helping Perez Arriaga, including his girlfriend and two of his brothers.Letras says Arriaga is expected to be arraigned on charges Wednesday. 742
