Businesses are considering how they'll need to change up their restrooms amid the pandemic.“I do think that most people would agree in the past, even pre-COVID, public restrooms tended not to be the cleanest place in most public venues and this is a real concern given the way germs can be transmitted,” said Steven Soifer, a professor of social work at the University of Mississippi.Across the country, some businesses have been doing quick fixes like taping off sinks or urinals to encourage distancing. Others have been changing up how often the restroom gets cleaned.McDonald’s wants its franchisees to clean their restrooms every 30 minutes.Soifer, who’s also the president of the American Restroom Association, thinks having the cleanings documented would give us all better peace of mind.“A lot of these public bathrooms in the better places have these charts and they tell you the last time the bathroom was cleaned,” Soifer. “I think that should become standard practice. People know they're cleaning the bathroom every half hour, every hour, once a day.”Mcdonald’s is also asking its restaurant owners to put in foot pulls so people can open the restroom door without touching it, automatic paper towel dispensers and touchless sinks.Soifer is hoping these guidelines will set the standard for other businesses.The American Restroom Association advocates for single stall, enclosed private restrooms, like we see more of in Europe. AURORA, Colo. – Twenty-four years after he was sentenced to life in prison without parole on a murder charge, a Colorado man has gotten a second chance at life and he’s making it count.Jeff Johnson, 41, was convicted in 1994 of killing John Leonardelli in a carjacking incident. But after the man who was convicted alongside him in Leonardelli’s death confessed and the U.S. Supreme Court changed its stance on juvenile sentences, Johnson was released from prison in November 2018. Johnson was 17 years old when he and Jonathan Jordan, then 19, were arrested for stabbing to death Leonardelli – a father of six – in an Aurora parking garage. Johnson said he saw Jordan stab Leonardelli but instead of helping the dying man, he instead jumped into Leonardelli’s Jaguar along with Jordan and left the scene.Both were convicted, but Jordan at one point admitted to killing Leonardelli. Johnson himself got into drugs while in prison but decided to turn his life around.Johnson started a program in prison to help other inmates and got involved in restorative justice programs to try and help mediate between criminals and their victims.“I came up with a motto for my life,” Johnson said. “A better life is a choice of way. I joined programs like Victim Impact, Victim Awareness, Restorative Justice. For me, that’s what gives my life purpose, and meaning. Being a mirror for them so they could see what you’re able to see.”Johnson met the woman who would change his life forever.“My name is Jenny Johnson, and I’m the wife of a juvenile lifer,” Jenny said. “I worked as a counselor, that’s how we crossed paths. They crossed for a reason. As for Jeff, it’s turning trauma into triumph, on all sides.”After Jordan confessed in a letter to Johnson, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that automatic life sentences for juveniles were unconstitutional. Colorado passed a law eliminating juvenile life sentences, though they were not made retroactive.But the state looked at 48 cases involving prisoners who received such sentences as teenagers and, after hearing from one of Leonardelli’s sons and others, Johnson was resentenced on Oct. 23. And on Nov. 2, 2018, he walked out of the Fremont Correctional Facility a free man.Johnson ended up marrying Jenny, and the two of them gave birth to twins a few months ago. The couple stays in contact with Leonardelli’s family, who are close friends.“This is what they gave me,” Johnson said, holding a watch. “This is Leonardelli’s watch. I keep it and always remember what time it is, to make sure I’m living the best life I can live and make the best choices I can make.”“No words are going to express how bad I feel about everything happening. There’s absolutely nothing I can do to make it better or give back,” Johnson said. “I made several poor choices that night and I take full responsibility for those actions.”But now on the outside, Johnson is continuing the work he started in prison to try and prevent other teens from ending up in similar circumstances that he did.“When you’re involved with somebody losing their life, I feel like it’s my duty and gives my life purpose or meaning in life to come out here, take my story and help all these other kids,” he said. “We’re going to pick the best life we want over the choices that we make. However, a few years after working at Fidelity Investments, the company announced it was rolling out a new workplace perk that would give its employees extra money toward repaying their student loan debt.“Oh my gosh. It was overwhelming in a positive way,” said Badeau, “So, they asked if I could help pilot it and I was like absolutely ‘why not’ why am I not going to do that, right?”Fidelity began giving her and other employees up to 6 a month toward her student loan repayment, with a ,000 lifetime cap. For Badeau, that was almost 20 percent of her monthly student loan bill, and it will equate to paying almost 20 percent of her overall student loan debt. “In the beginning it was something for me where I didn’t see a future in buying a home, I didn’t see a future in starting a family because I couldn’t even fathom getting married or paying for a wedding or having children while battling this debt,” said Badeau, “So now it’s something where that is an option for me.”A growing number of companies are offering similar help to staff stressed and saddled with student loan debt, in part, because these employers are seeing it’s actually benefiting them too.“What we have seen is that it is actually contributing to a reduction in turnover of over 70 percent,” said Asha Shrikantiah.Shrikantiah heads Fidelity’s student loan debt program and has seen it be so successful, internally at increasing employee loyalty and productivity, that the company has taken it external.“We now have an entire benefit’s business around helping people all across the country with standing up employer sponsored benefits for student debt.”Fidelity has helped almost a hundred other companies roll out some form of monthly student loan repayment assistance. That has brought the number to a total of about 8 percent of companies across the country that now offer this new benefit. Over the next five years, that is expected to grow to 20 percent, according to the Society of Human Resources Management. Eventually, student loan repayment assistance could be as common of a workplace perk as 401ks. “Honestly I think there will be no choice. I think just seeing the wave of the generations coming in burdened by the student debt,” said Badeau. “Saving for retirement is a great benefit but right up in there is dealing with your current debt.”Not every company that offers student loan repayment offers it in the same way. Some companies, like Fidelity, will pay their contribution directly to your servicer. Others will match all or a portion of what you pay in monthly student loans to your 401k or other retirement plan. There is quite a variety of ways companies are offering this benefit. Most of the variety comes from companies trying to work this new benefit in, while navigating around tax codes that hinder the amount and way the company can offer student loan repayment assistance.H.R. 1043 is a bill that was introduced in 2019 that would let employers give tax-free student loan assistance up to ,250 a year per employee.
