Calico Critters and a VTech Drill & Learn Toolbox are among several toys a Florida consumer advocacy group has deemed dangerous in its annual toy safety report ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.On Monday, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund (PIRG) released its "Trouble in Toyland," a guide to help keep children safe from dangerous toys.The report warns about several toys being sold across the U.S. are choking hazards, recalled toys being resold on eBay, magnets being swallowed, noisy toys, and in-app purchases.When it comes to toys with small parts, the report recommends parents inspecting the toys thoroughly "regardless of what the label does or doesn't say."For noisy toys, the report says they can hurt your child's hearing, so an adult should lower the volume or place tape over the speakers to "muffle the sound."Several toys mentioned in the report include:Neutronball building sets and magnets made by Zen Magnets LLC are considered choking hazards, according to PRIG."Never allow young children to play with high-powered magnets, and talk with older children about the dangers of being careless and leaving them within reach of their siblings," the report stated.Toys that have been recalled - 6" Promotional Aflac Doctor Duck, the Step2 Little Helper's Children's Grocery Shopping Cart, and the Fisher-Price Barbie Dream Camper — were recently found for sale on eBay."When shopping for toys, especially at garage sales and second-hand stores or sites, check saferproducts.gov to confirm the toy hasn't already been recalled," the report said.The report is there to inform the public as well as suggest guidelines for lawmakers. 1683

(KGTV) - Vice President Mike Pence toured the US-Mexico border in Southern California Monday, answering questions about the migrant caravan waiting to apply for asylum.Nearly 200 Border Patrol agents joined the Vice President at the Imperial station in Calexico.Pence said the migrant caravan’s attempt to seek asylum was a direct result of weak immigration laws and a “porous border.”He called on Congress to close what he described as immigration loopholes. Pence also asked for an end to the current catch-and-release policy, and a crackdown on sanctuary cities.“All of this cries out for action and thanks to the leadership to President Donald Trump, we are protecting the American people along our southern border and we are building a wall,” said Pence.Pence toured the construction site of the border fence renovation and received an update on the progress.“This new wall is roughly two or three times taller than the wall that was here today. The Wall Street Journal first reported the company's plans."It will give us a footprint to help educate consumers," he said in an interview.The announcement is a clear signal that Casper, an online startup that launched in 2014, believes a physical presence is still a crucial part of retail.Casper has recently rolled out 19 pop-up stores in markets like New York and San Francisco, and Krim said they are beating expectations, convincing the company to expand deeper."The presence of physical stores increases both offline as well as online sales," said Barbara Kahn, a marketing professor at Wharton.A permanent store footing will help Casper build loyalty with current customers, gain exposure among new shoppers, and increase impulse buys that can only come from browsing physical locations, she said.In addition, people usually want to try out mattresses and bedding before they make a final purchase, and stores will give Casper another way to appeal to them.The plan marks a new front for Casper, which broke into an industry controlled by brick-and-mortar retailers like Mattress Firm and Sleepy's.Casper distinguished itself by pricing the only mattress it sold at the time below its competitors, as well as offering free delivery and a 100-day trial period at home."Consumers have long gone into traditional mattress stores feeling uninformed and have been subject to ridiculous price points," said Bob Phibbs, CEO of the consultancy Retail Doctor.Casper offers just three varieties of mattresses, which gives it an advantage over rival mattress stores that offer a confusing array of soft, firm, foam, springy, and everything in between, Phibbs noted.Casper gained attention online with customers posting videos of themselves unboxing mattresses on social media, racking up 0 million in sales during its first full year.As it continued selling direct-to-consumer online, moving into bed frames, sheets, pillows, and dog mattresses, Casper partnered with retailers like Nordstrom, Target, and West Elm to increase distribution.Stores will help Casper stand out in a crowded mattress environment. Digital rivals such as Purple, Leesa, Tuft & Needle, and Yogabed have cropped up, while legacy retailers have taken a page from Casper, introducing delivery in a box."By opening stores, they are upping the ante to compete, and less well-funded competitors may be at a disadvantage," said Kahn.Amazon has also become a huge mattress player, increasing its sales in 2017 by 82% from the prior year, estimated research firm One Click Retail. Casper is only one of dozens of mattress brands Amazon sells.As Casper moves into brick-and-mortar territory, Mattress Firm is retrenching. Mattress Firm has closed 200 stores in 2018, according to Coresight Research, a retail think tank.Reuters reported this week that it was weighing a bankruptcy filing to close some of its 3,000 stores that were losing money.The company declined comment through a spokesperson.Casper is playing a different game than Mattress Firm, though.Online retailers like Casper and Warby Parker want stores to help it achieve scale advantages, while legacy retailers are trying to escape malls and invest in delivery and supply chains to survive online, said Jefferies analyst Randal Konik. 3489

  

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Ocean views, seafood and southern hospitality are what travelers can expect when visiting Charleston, South Carolina.“Charleston is a tourist destination," restaurant owner Eli Hyman said. "I think it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”Multiple publications, including Conde Nast Traveler, have ranked it as the number one small city to visit in the U.S. Seventh generation Charlestonian Michael Trouche is an expert on tourism in the city. He’s the owner of Charleston Footprint Walking Tours.“We are unique to America," Trouche said. "We have so many things here that are appealing. We’ve got this magnificent, beautiful, well-preserved city in this large contiguous area of about four-square miles, this wonderful climate with all kinds of blooming gardens and trees. You’ve got Charleston right on the waterfront, right on the Atlantic Ocean… and of course... a great southern hospitality. Charleston has always been known as being a very friendly city, so people just love it. People keep coming here and they keep coming back.”However, the past eight months and counting have been a nightmare for business and restaurant owners like Eli Hyman of Hyman’s Seafood.“It’s kind of spooky quiet... it’s eerie," Hyman said. "Because normally these streets would be bustling in the fall. It’s beautiful weather.”Like most places across the country, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the city hard. Robert Smith is the owner of a local marketing company called The Chart Group.“It almost was like overnight," Smith said. "First we heard about this virus overseas, and next thing you know we’re shutting our city down.”Considering the Chart Group offers video production and content creation for Charleston businesses, Smith depends on a thriving tourism industry. As everything shut down, his clients could no longer pay for his services. He too had to furlough employees.“Tourism within the last 30 or 40 years has become a major component," Trouche said. "It’s multi-millions of dollars in revenue for the city and for businesses and so it is a big player economically in Charleston.”Some businesses have closed forever and those that have survived had to let go of staff.“We had a staff of close to 200," Hyman said. "We’re down to about 130. We have a significant amount of them – about 40 or 45 – that have been with me for 15 years, so I have no choice but to keep my doors open. I’m going to do it for them.”Walking tours around the city only takes one person and Trouche says even that has been a struggle.“I typically give six day’s worth of tours and many times twice a day. I’ve gotten to the point where I may be giving two or three tours in an entire week.”Thankfully, there is hope. Business owners say tourism dollars are coming back as restrictions have been lifted and people are feeling more comfortable leaving home, especially on weekends. According to Erin Francis-Cummings, the president and CEO of Destination Analysts, research confirms that’s likely true.“Just last week when we surveyed American travelers, one in five said they felt like people in their personal networks were traveling more. They feel like they’ve observed that,” Francis-Cummings said.As we learn more about the virus and what can best protect us, Francis-Cummings says more people are feeling safe about traveling. However, if tourism businesses want to do well, she says they need to show that they care about the safety of their customers.“If they have the protocols in place and people feel safe, they will get business.”Francis-Cummings predicts there will be even more travelers once we have a vaccine. In the meantime, Robert says many are eager for another stimulus package from the government.“Helping these businesses through the pandemic and getting back on their feet in our opinion is the most important thing,” Smith said.Taking it day by day, business owners say they pray they’ll come out of this strong.“With God’s good grace we’ll get out of this soon," Hyman said. CHICAGO, Ill. – The national conversation continues to be dominated by the state of race relations in the United States. Five decades after the civil rights movement, there is still division.Naomi Davis and Sherrilynn Bevel both lived through that groundbreaking era and have insightful perspectives on how the country should move forward with a focus on racial equality.“I grew up in St. Albans Queens, where mom is the president of everything and all the lawns were cut and all the kids were college-bound and it was Martin, it was Malcolm and it was all great things were possible,” said Davis, the CEO of Blacks in Green on Chicago’s South Side.Davis says her organization has set out to fulfill a vision for self-sustaining Black communities.“We have a mission to create walk to work, walk to shop, walk to learn, walk to play villages, where African-American families own the property, own the businesses,” said Davis.Bevel is a nonviolence trainer, as well as the daughter of iconic civil rights pioneers and freedom riders Diane Nash and James Bevel. Both fought for desegregation and civil rights alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.“My father always talked about creating dramas that allow people to see themselves and have to decide who they were in the bigger picture,” said Bevel.Her father was with Dr. King in Memphis and witnessed his assassination in April 1968.“After I was born even, the civil rights workers were finding there will be small communities where Black men's bodies were found in cotton fields and that kind of thing and my mother shared that she had spent like days trying to convince somebody from one of the wire services to come down and report on a body that they had found,” said Bevel. “And it just wasn't news. It wasn’t news.”Both women point to education and more listening as the core path to resolution and coexistence.“We haven't been serious for a long time about educating our citizens,” Bevel said. “And I don't just mean Black and brown people in the inner cities. We have these pockets of rural America where young poor and working-class whites do not understand where their interests run right in line with other working people of color.”Davis says the path forward is a reckoning where the disenfranchised finally get priority at the front of the line, either through reparations or systematic redirection of resources.“That's the math of it,” said Davis. “If you're going to solve for disparity,
