URUMQI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Diplomatic envoys from 26 countries and regions in China began a five-day visit to northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Monday, about a month after the deadly riot in the regional capital of Urumqi.     At the invitation of the autonomous regional government, they are expected to -- through the visit -- acquire a better understanding of Xinjiang's development over the past several decades in various respects, including its politics, economy, ethnic and religious policies, preservation of cultural relics and the livelihood of local residents. "Violence is not allowed in any sovereignty and law-ruled nation." 

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Holding an umber basketball in his hand, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan became the center of attention at the end of the first round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue on Tuesday. The basketball, with Barack Obama's autograph, is a gift from the U.S. president to Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan who is the co-host of the "Economic Track" of the dialogue.     The basketball is considered a symbol of the U.S. government's hospitality and gratitude to Chinese officials for their efforts in making this dialogue a success. PINGYAO, Shanxi, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition exclusively dedicated to Canadian surgeon Henry Norman Bethune opened Saturday at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in north China's Shanxi Province.     Bethune is a household name in China, a country where he saved numerous lives and sacrificed his own in 1939 during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese aggression.     "He is noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people," Chairman Mao wrote in his article In Memory of Norman Bethune.     The exhibition consists of 41 photos of Dr. Bethune living and working in China, some of which had never been shown before.     "As Canadians, we are all proud to be associated with this visionary adventurer and deeply touched by the respect and recognition shown to him here in China," said Canadian Ambassador to China, David Mulroney.     Most of the pictures were provided by Wang Yan, daughter of ShaFei, who was a forefather of China's news photography and a close friend of Bethune.     "I remember that I was touched when I first read about Bethune in my school days and now it feels like looking at the pictures of an old friend who has just passed away," said visitor Wu Jun.     "Many people love Bethune for they have learnt his deeds and spirit in Chairman Mao's article while my affection for him comes from his friendship with my father," Wang said. "Bethune was my father's mentor as he exemplified the essence of communism."     Upon his death Bethune left his Kodak Retina camera to Sha Fei.     Bethune also healed Japanese soldiers, took pictures of them, which were sent back to Japan.     "He wished the Japanese people would protest against the war when they saw how their sons were suffering on battlefield. He was a true humanist," Wang said.     Just before he died, Bethune wrote in a letter, saying that the last two years (those he spent in China) have been the most significant, the most meaningful years of his life.

HONG KONG, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China displayed a scale model of its jetliner C919,the country's first home-grown large commercial airliner, for the first time at the Asian Aerospace '09 on Tuesday. With a scale of one to ten, the model was so far "the most precise one put up for public display," said Guo Bozhi, president of the Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute, a unit of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, or COMAC.     The mockup was displayed at a prominent position at the Asian Aerospace, Asia's leading air show, side by side with industry giants like Boeing and Airbus. Together with some ten other Chinese mainland-based manufacturers, suppliers and service providers at the show, it attracted attention of media from around the world. A mockup of jumbo jet C919, the major project of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), is displayed at the Asian Aerospace '09 in Hong Kong, China, Sept. 8, 2009. It has a registered capital of 19 billion yuan (2.78 billion U.S. dollars), with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission as the biggest shareholder.     The company has said the maiden flight of C919 was planned for late 2014, with delivery expected by 2016. It was intended as a single-aisle airliner to target the short and medium haul markets in eight to ten years from now, Wang said.     If successful, COMAC plans to produce 50 C919 aircraft each year at the early stage and annual production could reach 100 or even more at a later stage, depending on how it is received by the market, Guo said. BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China appreciates India's decision to terminate a trade investigation into Chinese-made passenger car tires, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Saturday.     The decision would not only help boost the steady development of bilateral trade ties, but also benefit the downstream businesses of India, the MOC said in a statement on its website.     China hoped to increase exchanges and cooperation on trade issues with the Indian government and encouraged dialogue and cooperation among industries for mutual benefit, it said.     The Directorate General of Safeguards under India's Ministry of Finance initiated a safeguard investigation on passenger car tire imports from China in May, according to the statement.     A safeguard duty, a temporary relief, usually takes the form of increased duties to higher than bound rate or standard rates or quantitative restrictions on imports.     According to Indian government statistics, from April to December last year, India imported 20 million U.S. dollars worth of tires involved in the case from China.
