SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said.The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl.The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As COVID-19 cases continue to surge across California, many San Diego County businesses are struggling with the latest restrictions. Richard Bailey, mayor of Coronado, is now asking California Gov. Gavin Newsom to reconsider the latest stay-at-home order.Bailey called the order inconsistent, arbitrary, and ineffective."Shutting down businesses that are not contributing to the spread of COVID will not reduce the number of cases, will not reduce the number of hospitalizations, but it will put tens of thousands of people out of work," said Bailey.Restaurants can no longer offer outdoor dining and playgrounds are closed. Personal care services, hair salons, and barbershops are just some businesses that have to shut down for three weeks. Bailey said while COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rising should be taken seriously, some of these closures don't make sense."We should all have a really firm understanding of what our risk level is based on our own demographics and our own underlying conditions. There's no data to support that outdoor dining is a significant risk for transmission," Bailey said.In the letter sent to Newsom on Monday, Bailey asked for a reconsideration of the latest health order based on data specific to San Diego County and a new public health strategy."We should treat citizens like adults and put in place recommendations that really emphasize all the best practices that will slow the spread," he said.Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state's Health and Human Services Secretary, explained Tuesday that only 10 percent of ICU capacity is currently available in the Southern California region, which San Diego County falls into."The transmission is now so widespread across our state that most all nonessential activities create a serious risk for transmission," said Ghaly.He said part of the regional stay-at-home order is based on our experiences with flattening the curve earlier this year and the success of other countries that implemented similar shutdowns."Belgium, when they imposed a nationwide closure, the positivity rate in just three weeks fell from 21 percent to 8 percent," said Ghaly.Bailey said there should be a better plan to slow the spread without causing significant harm to small businesses along the way."They're picking winners and losers, and unfortunately big businesses are the winners, and small businesses that can barely afford it are becoming the losers," said Bailey.In the meantime, Bailey is encouraging business owners to follow the state orders, so places like salons and restaurants don't lose state licensing."We're really just trying to help businesses be compliant to the state order," he said.Newsom has yet to respond to Bailey's letter. 2733

The park's attractions will be limited to outdoor animal exhibits and shows. A ticket will include food, drink, and merchandise. Passholders like Becker get a complimentary ticket but must pay for the lanyard for the food and beverages. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Americans wait for a regulatory decision on Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate, local dry ice companies are counting on the cold chain distribution to help boost sales that have significantly dried up during the pandemic.San Diego Ice Company in the Midway District said it is already fielding calls from hospitals and clinics looking to order dry ice. The family-owned business has distributed ice products for decades, but vice president Anthony Toma said the company has secured the equipment needed to begin manufacturing dry ice from liquid carbon dioxide in December.“Without this dry ice, there's no vaccine,” Toma said.Dry ice is carbon dioxide in its solid form. It’s critical to shipping and storing Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate.While Moderna’s vaccine can be stored in a standard freezer, Pfizer’s candidate needs to be kept at 94 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. That’s colder than winter in Antarctica.The company says once it gets the green light from the FDA, it will pack vials in boxes with dry ice. Each shipper box can hold up to 5,000 doses and will be fitted with sensors to constantly track location and temperature.Pfizer will ship the boxes from sites in Kalamazoo, MI and Pleasant Prairie, WI via FedEx and UPS, sending them to hospitals, clinics and pharmacies across the country.From there, vaccination providers must store the doses in a way that preserves their efficacy. Long-term storage of up to six months requires an ultra low-temperature freezer, but outside of hospitals those units are rare.The cold chain required for Pfizer’s candidate is “the most challenging issue” facing distribution, Governor Gavin Newsom said Monday.Newsom said the state plans to assist Pfizer’s efforts by purchasing 16 ultra low-temperature freezers, along with 61 smaller freezers that will be positioned in high-need areas.Another storage option is to keep doses in Pfizer’s thermal shipper box. Vials can last in the box for up to 15 days be refilling the dry ice, and Toma expects some of his dry ice will be part of that process.“We're gonna play a big part,” he said. “We're ready for that and we're honored to do it.”Toma is hoping dry ice will help thaw sales that have plummeted because of the pandemic. A lot of the ice business relies on big events and conventions that have been shut down. Restaurants have reduced volume. Airlines have cut back on food service.“There are a couple of [ice] companies that I spoke with and they said, ‘If it wasn't for dry ice, we wouldn't know what to do,’” he said. “Dry ice is keeping most of us alive.”Toma knows the implications aren’t just financial. Both he and his wife caught the virus and recovered, so they know just how important these vaccines are.Starting in December, San Diego Ice Company will start producing about 1800 pounds of dry ice an hour, he said. That’s enough to fill 36 of Pfizer’s shipper boxes, which require 50 pounds of dry ice each.The FDA has scheduled a meeting of its vaccine advisory committee on December 10.
