SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council will look into creating "Bus-Only" lanes along a 2.7 mile stretch of El Cajon Boulevard.The lanes would go from Park Avenue to Fairmount Street, an area commonly known as "The Boulevard." MTS Route 1 and the 215 Rapid Route are the most frequent buses along that stretch. Route 1 runs along El Cajon Boulevard from La Mesa to Fashion Valley. The Rapid 215, which launched in 2014, goes from Downtown to San Diego State University, offering fewer stops than traditional bus lines."When it was originally designed, it did have these exclusive lanes," says MTS Spokesperson Rob Schupp. "That's really what makes Bus Rapid Transit work, is when you can zip by all the cars."Combined, the 215 and 1 carry more than 10,000 passengers per day along El Cajon Boulevard. That makes it the second busiest stretch of road in the MTS system.Schupp says dedicated bus lanes would take up to 5 minutes off the trip, which could lead to more passengers."We're hoping this pilot will show us that a dedicated lane along a long stretch of road can build ridership and get people out of cars," he says. "The buses come faster, you get another 5 minutes from the dedicated lanes, and now your trip is competitive with a car."A recent study by the city's Transportation Engineering Operations office details three options for a bus-only lane. One option would separate the right lanes of traffic from the other lanes with a solid white line and markings that say "Bus Only." Another option would paint the entire right lane red and designate it for buses. A third option would make "pass by zones" in the most congested parts of the street, painting them red and allowing buses to bypass cars at intersections.Business leaders along "The Boulevard" say adding bus-only lanes would make the area safer, providing a buffer between the sidewalk and traffic. They also feel the change would lead to more people spending more time in the area."There's definitely a sentiment of wanting to make El Cajon Blvd a safer business district," says Beryl Foreman from the Boulevard Business Improvement Association.Foreman also says it will help with parking problems in North Park and City Heights, as better bus service will lead to fewer people driving in the area.City Council President Georgette Gomez and Council Member Chris Ward both sent a letter supporting the idea. The full Council will have to approve the project if they decide on the entire red lane option. According to the tweet, the hummingbird was found at the base of a tree in the parking lot of station 9. The department says the bird was unable to fly due to its injuries. “After some firefighter TLC and lots of sugar water, it was able to fly back to its mother. A great save,” the department said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There are still many unknowns surrounding SARS-CoV-2, the official name of the new coronavirus, but almost from the beginning one thing has been clear: people with underlying health conditions are more at-risk.San Diego County Health officials released new data this month showing which underlying conditions pose the greatest risk of death from COVID-19, based on the number of times a condition was listed on death certificates and other medical records.Among the 626 COVID deaths recorded in San Diego County as of Tuesday, 96 percent of the victims had at least one underlying condition. It may have to do with the prevalence of these conditions in the population and the way SARS-CoV-2 attacks the body, according to Sharp Rees-Stealy physician Dr. Abisola Olulade.Scientists are still scrambling to understand exactly how SARS-CoV-2 attacks and kills patients, but emerging research offers some theories.It starts when virus particles enter a person’s nose or mouth. The coronavirus makes it way towards the lungs first, and the immune system tries to fight it, causing inflammation along the way that can lead to pneumonia.People with hypertension and diabetes, the top two underlying conditions in San Diego County’s data, often have existing damage to their blood vessels.Based on early studies, scientists theorize the virus may be causing more damage to the vessel through inflammation and clotting, or outright attacking the blood vessels themselves.On top of that, hypertension is common: “Almost half of all adults in the United States have hypertension,” Dr. Olulade said. “45 percent.”Patients with cardiac disease, like coronary heart disease and congestive heart failure, have existing damage to their heart.Early research shows the coronavirus can cause inflammation of the heart muscle. It might also damage the heart indirectly, as the fight with the immune system in the lungs lowers oxygen levels in the blood.“If your heart isn’t pumping enough oxygen out to the blood, that amplifies the risk and the threat of dying from COVID,” Dr. Olulade said.Patients with dementia, the fourth most common condition on the list, already have an elevated risk of dying from pneumonia, one of the calling cards of a severe COVID-19 infection. People with diabetes also have a risk of pneumonia. In fact, the risk is so high, the CDC recommends patients with diabetes get a pneumonia vaccination.For individuals with chronic kidney disease, scientists aren’t yet sure if the virus attacks the kidneys directly or the kidneys get hit with collateral damage from other body system failures.Regardless of the underlying condition, Dr. Olulade said taking steps to treat and keep it under control can greatly reduce your risk from the coronavirus.Individuals with mild or controlled asthma, for example, are not considered to be at higher risk of severe illness, she said.San Diego County’s list does not include two underlying conditions considered high risk by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: cancer and sickle cell disease.That might be because the 626 deaths are a small sample size, Dr. Olulade said. 3525
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Police Departments K9 officers and their handlers were honored at the unveiling of the new K9 Memorial Dedication Ceremony Wednesday afternoon. They don’t carry weapons. Often times, they are the weapon.“We’ve had several dogs injured, stabbed, and shot,” Lt. Tony Lessa of the San Diego Police K9 Unit said. “Fortunately, only one was killed in the line of duty.”Since 1984, ninety-two San Diego Police K9’s have served alongside their handlers. They enter themselves into dangerous situations for the good of the community. Many said their value is immeasurable. “They improve officer safety for out officers in a way that they reduce the use of force we have to use,” Lt. Lessa said. “You can’t put a number on that.”That is why a new Memorial wall was built for the specialized unit. Sitting at the helm is a bronze statue of German Shepard Bando, who was struck by a car and killed in the line of duty in 1994. Underneath his statue are the names of several K9’s and their handlers.Patsy Samson was the main donor for the San Diego Police Foundation. She worked with the organization for eight months until finally unveiling the memorial today.“They love their K9’s,” Samson said. “They take care of their K9’s. They just want to do the best you can do for the community that they protect and serve, every single day.”Whether it’s their cuteness on their time off, or their fierce abilities to bring down criminals, the K9’s officers have a special place in hearts.
