BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called for a stronger high-level dialogue mechanism with the United States.     "China and the United States should continue to step up their high-level dialogue mechanism for substantive cooperation and stronger bilateral relations," Hu told visiting U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. TAIPEI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The panda pair given by the Chinese mainland to Taiwan made their debut at the Taipei Zoo Saturday evening, meeting a select group of visitors including Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou and Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan.     "It's an honor for Taiwan to breed the two pandas, as there are only about 1,600 pandas in the world," said Ma, at the ceremony to inaugurate the new enclosure for the pandas.     About 500 orphans and children from poor families were invited by the city government to be the first visitors to the panda pair.     "It's a time for family reunions at Spring Festival, but some children have lost their families and others cannot afford to go to the zoo. HEFEI, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on Saturday that local government should seek every means to help migrant workers land jobs, calling it "a prominent and important task" in the current rural work agenda.     Hui made the remarks when he toured east China's Anhui Province. He urged local enterprises to guarantee job opportunities for migrant workers and asked infrastructure projects contractors to hire as many migrant workers as possible.     The vocational training for the migrant workers should be strengthened, Hui said.     Migrant workers were also encouraged to go back to their hometown to start their own business, and support should be given in bank loans, tax breaks and business registration, according to Hui.     Hui also urged local government to attach great importance to the fight against drought, which plagued more than 866,700 hectares of wheat in the province. He said rural water control facility construction should be speeded up.     He also asked local authorities to enhance the control of bird flu and foot-and-mouth disease.

YICHANG, Hubei, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Three Gorges Project has completed trial water storage operations for the year, with the water level in the reservoir exceeding 172 meters.     As of Tuesday, the water level had risen 27.3 m since Sept. 28,when this year's storage plan began, said the developer of the massive water conservancy project, the China Three Gorges Project Corp. (CTGPC) on Friday.     The water-raising measures ended on Tuesday when the water behind the dam reached 172.3 m and the reservoir held more than 19.3 billion cubic meters of water. The reservoir then began to discharge water.     Generally speaking, the trial operation, which is a test of quality, went well. The structure, generators and shipping locks were all in normal condition and the water quality was not affected, said a CTGPC statement.     The water level is expected to reach 175 m in 2009 when the Three Gorges project is completed.     At 156 m, the target level for the second phase, the reservoir could be fully functional in terms of flood control, power generation and navigation control.     Launched in 1993, construction of the gigantic concrete structure of the dam was completed and began to store water in May2006.     Previously, the reservoir's temporary cofferdams held water at a depth of 135 to 139 m.     The Three Gorges Project, with a budget equivalent to 22.5 billion U.S. dollars, is a multi-functional water control system built at the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River.     Its main works are a dam, a five-tier ship lock and 26 hydropower turbo-generators.     The dam will have 14 turbo-generators on the left bank and 12 on the right. Combined, they will produce 84.7 billion kw of electricity annually.     There are plans to add six more turbines by 2012.     As of June, 1.24 million residents had been relocated to make way for the dam construction.

They would first be transported to Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu, about 120 km from Ya'an, and then be flown to Taiwan.     Before their departure, the pandas had their breakfast – carrot and steamed corn buns.     A brief ceremony was held at the Bifeng Gorge Base in Ya'an before the pair's departure.     Zhang Hemin, director of the giant panda protection center, said at the ceremony he hoped the pair would bring happiness to Taiwan compatriots.     The 4-year-old pandas, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, have been living at a breeding base in Ya'an, Sichuan Province, since the May 12 strong earthquake which damaged their former home in Wolong.     Qu Chunmao, the pair's keeper in Ya'an, spoke in tears, "I wish them a happy life in Taiwan."     A Taiwan keeper, who would accompany the pair to the island, said the pandas were in good condition.     "They had a good breakfast to sustain them on the long journey," she said.
