SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego Health and UCSD School of Medicine Friday announced that the university's Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine is significantly ramping up testing for COVID-19, projecting a capacity to complete 1,000 to 1,500 tests per day within two to three weeks.The interdisciplinary team of scientists and physicians from the school and hospital partnered with five in vitro diagnostics manufacturers in the effort -- Thermo Fisher Scientific, Roche Diagnostics, GenMark Diagnostics, Luminex Corporation and Abbott Diagnostics."UC San Diego has always been a recognized national leader in developing industry partnerships for the greater good," UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A big rig tipped over in North County Tuesday afternoon, spilling debris onto the road and forcing a hazmat team into action. According to authorities, the truck tipped over near eastbound SR-78 at Vista Village Drive just before noon. The incident caused house demolition debris and diesel from the big rig to spill all over the road. In total, about 30 gallons of diesel spilled onto the road. Crews used dirt and kitten litter to clean up the fuel. Firefighters, CHP, deputies and hazmat crews all responded to the scene. The incident caused the hours-long closure of the Vista Village overpass. At this time, it's unclear what caused the truck to tip over. The driver was uninjured.  750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A dream became reality for a San Diego woman, but not in a good way. Jenna Evans says she swallowed her engagement ring in her sleep.Tuesday night, Evans dreamed that she and her fiance, Bobby, were facing off with "bad guys" on a high-speed train. During the struggle, Bobby told Evans that she had to swallow her engagement ring to protect it. So she did. Not just in her dream, but in real life. She woke to find the ring clean off her finger. "When I woke up and it was not on my hand, I knew exactly where it was," Evans said. "It was in my stomach."The next morning, Evans and her future husband went to Urgent Care, where they saw her X-rays. Her ring was clearly nestled right in her stomach.A gastroenterologist, however, suggested it would not be best to let nature run its course. Doctors recommended an upper endoscopy to remove her beloved bling."I was really happy because I don't know if I can look at it and appreciate it in the same way, if I had to search for it," Evans chuckled.At this point, Evans says she could feel the ring in her stomach and it was starting to become painful.Doctors safely removed the ring from her intestines and returned the jewelry to Evans — well, to Bobby for safe keeping, at least. Bobby eventually gave Evans her ring back."I feel very grateful that I got it back, and that this is a happy and funny story," Evans said. It was a crazy adventure that gave new meaning to "A Sparkling bride, inside and out."She says she now takes the ring off when going to sleep.The couple will get married in Evans' home state of Texas, hopefully with the ring in hand, next May. 1641

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Weather forecasters are warning of "near-critical fire weather conditions" Sunday evening through Tuesday morning in San Diego County because of developing Santa Ana winds."Areas west of the mountains will see a sharp rise in temperatures early this week," the National Weather Service said, "with coastal locations potentially experiencing their hottest conditions so far this year."Inland areas and especially deserts will remain very warm through Thursday, the NWS said, before widespread cooling takes hold late in the week.Early morning satellite images showed widespread clouds extending to the coastal slopes, but much thinner than Saturday and with less uniform coverage, forecasters said. With clouds breaking up, clearer skies Sunday afternoon will allow temperatures to rise several degrees higher than on Saturday.Santa Ana winds will strengthen on Monday, with maximum gusts of 40 to 45 mph as humidity plummets, resulting in elevated fire weather conditions, the NWS said. Highs near 80 and 90 for coastal and inland valleys are expected."Model guidance suggests coastal highs on Tuesday could be the hottest so far this year, climbing well into the 80s." forecasters said. "Depending on the timing of the return to onshore flow, it's conceivable for some coastal cities to reach the low 90s.""All in all, temperatures will be around 20 degrees above normal at the coast, and 10-15 degrees above normal for inland valleys, where temperatures may near 100 degrees in spots," they said.Off the coast of San Diego County, gusty winds and large combined seas will create hazardous boating conditions through Monday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 36-year-old man riding an electric scooter suffered severe head injuries when he collided with an SUV at an intersection near Liberty Station.According to San Diego police, the crash was reported around 10:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Byron and Rosecrans streets in Point Loma.Investigators determined the man was riding an electric scooter westbound on Byron Street when he traveled through a red light at the intersection, directly into the path of a Volvo SUV driven by a 20-year-old woman.The victim was taken to a hospital with multiple facial fractures, which Police say are life-threatening.The Volvo driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.Drugs or alcohol were not a factor for the Volvo driver, but Police say the scooter rider was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. 861
