NEW YORK (AP) — Keith Raniere, a self-improvement guru whose organization NXIVM attracted millionaires and actresses among its adherents, was sentenced Tuesday to 120 years in prison.The 60-year-old was convicted of charges accusing him of turning some of his followers into sex slaves branded with his initials.The court proceeding in Brooklyn culminates several years of revelations about the organization, which charged people thousands of dollars for self improvement courses.Those people included Hollywood celebrities and others willing to endure humiliation and pledge obedience for Raniere’s vision of how to pursue perfection.Prosecutors said Raniere led what amounted to a criminal enterprise. Co-conspirators helped recruit and groom sexual partners for him.Raniere’s sentencing comes about a month after Clare Bronfman, a wealthy benefactor of his, was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case.The Seagram’s liquor fortune heir was taken into custody to begin her 81-month sentence immediately after her appearance in federal court in Brooklyn on Sept. 30.Bronfman admitted in a guilty plea last year that she committed credit card fraud on behalf of Raniere. 1185

NORFOLK, Va. — With members of Breonna Taylor's family on hand, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam signed a bill into law Monday that banned the use of no-knock warrants, a controversial police tactic that has been the subject of criticism across the country since Taylor's death in March and amid the monthslong protests against police brutality."We are taking a step forward to make sure other families don't suffer the same loss," Northam said.In March, Taylor, a health care worker in Louisville, Kentucky, was fatally shot by police in her home while a "no-knock" warrant was being served at her apartment. While no officers have faced charges in connection with her death, city lawmakers have already outlawed the use of such warrants in Lousiville."We can't have this continue to happen to African American women and men," State Senator Mamie Locke, D-District 2, said.Two of Taylor's aunts from Louisville were on hand for Monday's ceremony as Delegate Lashrecse Aird, D-63rd District and Locke joined Northam to sign the legislation they had sponsored.In Virginia, judges and magistrates can no longer issue a no-knock warrant. According to Northam's office, the Commonwealth is the third state to ban this practice and the first state to do so since Taylor's death."There have been a couple of cases years ago where sometimes the officers make the mistake and go to the wrong house and they don't announce [themselves], and the residents return fire and it's a bad situation," Richard James said.James spent almost 30 years as an officer and detective with the Norfolk Police Department, and he is the former department head for criminal justice and forensic science at Tidewater Community College.James says the new law protects citizens."It also lets a person know who is woken up in a slumber that it is not someone breaking into the house," he said.It also protects officers as well, but James says it can be a challenge for police now when they are trying to protect themselves from an actual threat."[They are going to need to ]make sure they have additional steps to make sure they are safe, and it's going to take some practice and training," James said.Gaylene Kanoyton is the political action chair for the Virginia state conference NAACP. New plans for student loan debt forgiveness are being proposed as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office in just a few weeks. Many of those with student loans, as well as many economists, are hopeful some form of student loan debt forgiveness will pass.“I think it is one of the most accessible ways President-elect Joe Biden has to stimulate the economy,” said Suzanne Kahn, director of education, jobs, and worker power at the Roosevelt Institute in New York.In an interview covering the possible benefits of student loan debt forgiveness, Kahn explained the two ways in which the Biden can get the debt forgiven. One, he can push for Congress to include this debt relief in the next stimulus package, or two, he can take executive action. Either option could eliminate student loan debt for roughly 15 million borrowers and reduce the debt of another 30 million Americans.The president-elect is currently focused on pushing for ,000 to be forgiven in the next stimulus bill and has not said if he would actually consider executive action. However, he has also not refuted that option either.The latter option is certainly the more controversial way to get this debt forgiven, although many Democrats argue it is still legal and fully within a president’s power to do so. Many high-ranking Democrats in Congress explain Biden would have the authority to do this through the Higher Education Act.Experts like Kahn believe it is more likely that Congress will not agree on any amount of student loan debt forgiveness and Biden will take executive action.“I think that it is through executive action, or at least the first movement we see around it will be executive action,” said Kahn. “That really is because the federal government owes 95 percent of student debt, and the Secretary of Education has the ability to cancel it.”“My stance is that it is not inevitable,” said Neal McClusky, director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the Cato Institute.McClusky believes a third option is that no form of student loan debt forgiveness is passed, while he concedes there is a chance that Biden could issue an executive order forgiving student loan forgiveness. However, he also points out that option could be challenged in the courts with some questioning his authority through the Higher Education Act.“There seems to be straws that he can grab and say, ‘Look, this gives me the authority to just write off this debt.’ Other people say it is not clear in the law that he can do that,” said McClusky. “So, what would be the most likely outcome is that he would try. If he were to try and cancel student loan debt through executive action, it would end up in court and would be a pretty long court battle.”So, at the end of the day, where do we really stand with student loan debt forgiveness? The consensus is that it is more likely than ever before that some form of student loan debt will be forgiven, but we’re still nowhere close to a guarantee that will actually happen anytime soon.“I don’t think it is inevitable, but I do think it is important that it is on the table,” said Kahn. 3115
