COLOMBO, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne and the visiting Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang stressed here on Friday to enhance the two friendly nations' cooperation in a wide range of areas including economy, education, culture and international affairs.Jayaratne told Zhang that Sri Lanka's economy has been greatly benefited by some mega-projects funded by China in recent years. He also expressed his gratitude to China's participation in Sri Lanka's economic rebuilding after the conclusion of a 30-year-old civil war.The Sri Lanka prime minister said Sri Lanka treasures the friendship between the two countries and unswervingly supports China on issues of her core interests.Zhang congratulated Sri Lanka for the end of the civil war, as well as the steady progress in rebuilding and social-economic development.He said China hopes to continue to increase friendly exchange between the two countries and enhance cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, industry, communication, energy, education, culture, tourism, among others.Zhang also proposed the two countries to enhance multilateral cooperation in the international arena to protect the just rights and interests of the developing nations.They also witnessed the signing of several economic and commercial cooperation agreements after their talks.Sri Lankan speaker Chamal Rajapaksa held talks with Zhang earlier on Friday.The Chinese vice premier arrived in Colombo Thursday night for a three-day visit to Sri Lanka, the second stop of his four-nation tour which will also take him to Greece and Austria. He visited Pakistan before his arrival to Colombo.

OTTAWA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday for talks on the development of China-Canada ties.The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on major global and regional issues of common concern, said Chinese diplomats.According to the schedule, Hu and Harper will attend a signing ceremony of cooperation documents following their talks.Hu flew into Ottawa on Wednesday for a state visit to Canada.This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada.

HANOI, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Wednesday urged East Asia Summit (EAS) to continue to serve as a platform for macro-level dialogue in the region.EAS, as a leaders-led forum, could be a forward-looking platform for countries in the region to explore ways to push for strong, continued and coordinated growth in the region, said Yang at the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Informal Consultations.The consultations drew foreign ministers from ten ASEAN ( Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, and New Zealand.Participants pose for group photos during the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers s'Informal Consultations in Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, July 21, 2010 0EAS has served as a dialogue platform among different countries in the region on major issues in the past year, including the effect of the international financial crisis, said Yang.Yang said the world economy is recovering, however, the momentum needs to be further sustained. Countries in the region could make better use of the platform to achieve sound and fast growth.Yang said EAS has pushed forward cooperation on finance, disaster mitigation, trade, education and climate change in the region.Yang said China would intensify education cooperation with other EAS countries. In the coming five years, China will provide 400 more government scholarship each year to developing countries in the EAS framework.Yang also illustrated China's position on region architecture development at the meeting.Yang said the development of regional architecture is conducive to the peace, development, cooperation and prosperity of East Asia. Yang reaffirmed that ASEAN should maintain centrality in regional framework.ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

  

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- China publicized regulations on natural disaster relief on Wednesday.The regulations, which make clear the responsibility of governments in disaster relief work, will take effect Sept. 1, 2010.According to the regulations, leaders of governments at all levels will be held accountable for relief work, and the nationwide relief work is to be commanded by the national disaster reduction authority.The regulations also stipulates that governments above county level are responsible for mapping out emergency response plans, providing transportation and communication facilities to disaster relief work, designating emergency shelters and training disaster relief teams.Further, the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council issued a statement Wednesday, further clarifying the regulations.The statement notes that China is a natural disaster prone country. Over the past two decades, natural disasters have killed 4,300 people each year.The central government has allocated over 5 billion yuan (737 million US dollars) of annual relief fund during the past five years.The statement goes on to say that disaster relief work is still plagued by several problems, such as slack supervision over donations and other concerns.To address this problem, the regulations stipulate that donations could only be used in relief work. Governments at all levels, including grass-roots communities, should make public all information about donors, amounts of donations, and its specific usage.The regulations also stipulates that governments at all levels must devise a supervisory system dealing with complaints and whistle blowers, to prevent abuse of disaster relief donations and materials.

  

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- They chart the highs and lows of an eventful six months, covering issues and events that brought people together across borders and divided them in debate.They are the top 10 buzzwords of the first half of 2010, compiled from 16 leading Chinese newspapers.The list was jointly released by the National Language Resource Monitoring and Research Center, Beijing Language and Culture University, the Chinese Information Processing Society and the China Association of Press Technicians.EARTHQUAKEA devastating earthquake hit Haiti in early January, leaving around 230,000 people dead.Another serious quake hit Chile shortly after.And on April 14, almost two years after the devastating south China earthquake of May 12, 2008, a 7.1-magnitude quake left at least 2,698 people dead and 270 missing in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in the northwestern Qinghai Province.Immediately after the quake, rescuers joined the race to find survivors while medical workers battled freezing temperatures and low oxygen to save lives.Millions of people donated money and materials with a total value of 8.5 billion yuan (1.25 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of last month.SHANGHAI EXPOThe 2010 World Expo in Shanghai is the first World Expo in a developing country since its debut in London in 1851.The Chinese government has invested billions of yuan in infrastructure and services for the six-month event that opened on May 1.The Shanghai Expo is the largest in Expo history with 189 countries and 57 international organizations participating.By July 29, around 34.5 million people had visited the Expo, leading to a shortage of pavilion entrance tickets and long queues.
