CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Four astronauts are heading to Florida's Kennedy Space Center for SpaceX's second crew launch next weekend. This time there are twice as many astronauts as the test flight earlier this year, and the mission will last for a full six months. The three Americans and one Japanese astronaut are due in Florida on Sunday. They're scheduled to rocket away Saturday night to the International Space Station. For NASA, it marks the long-awaited start of regular crew rotations, with private companies providing the lifts. The astronauts have named their capsule Resilience given all the challenges of 2020. 634

Buried at the core of "Mulan" is the concept of deception. Deceiving others for the perceived greater good, deceiving an overzealous enemy and even deceiving one's self at a steep price. All of them are at play in the long-awaited, oft-disappointing live-action remake. There are some things going for the oft-dull film.Director Niki Caro, who proved adept at inspirational tales with "Whale Rider," "North Country" and "McFarland, USA," has a pulse on the heart of the feminist fable, about a woman who masquerades as a man to protect her family and homeland. The visuals are dynamic, and the casting is note-perfect.Martial arts legends Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Gong Li play significant roles, and the cinematography and choreography often recalls exaggerated, Ang Lee-style theatrics. The core of the film -- that Mulan could convincingly trick her military comrades into thinking she's a man -- falls flat. While Liu Yifei thrives with the athletic ability and emotion needed in the lead role, the makeup department did her no favors. She looks more like a supermodel than a rough-hewn male soldier. Scenes in which men assume her gender are unintentionally funny. The new "Mulan" takes a more somber and serious tone than the original, swapping out the Eddie Murphy-voiced comic relief dragon Mushu for a CGI Phoenix, and subduing most musical moments in favor of tense, overly dry brooding. It's been a long and rough wait for superfans. Originally slated for a July 24 release, the movie was bumped to August 21, before landing September 4 on Disney+ as a early access add-on. It will be free on the app December 4, and unless you're a superfan, you're best off waiting until then.At least fans will be able to be mildly disappointed in the comfort of their own homes, and be able to hit pause if they get a little drowsy. There is impressive artistry at work. The film is every bit as gorgeous and sweeping as Disney's best live-action remakes: "The Jungle Book" and "The Lion King."Add this one to the pile of disappointing live-action remakes of Disney classics, along with "Aladdin," "Dumbo," "Alice in Wonderland," "Lady and the Tramp" and "Beauty and the Beast."The movie's legacy may well be what it does for boosting Disney's app and changing the way studios sell movies to the public. In those respects, "Mulan" is as monumental a cinematic landmark as its 1998 predecessor. It's too bad the movie itself is a snoozer.RATING: 2 stars out of 4.Phil Villarreal TwitterPhil Villarreal FacebookPhil Villarreal Amazon Author PagePhil Villarreal Rotten TomatoesThis review by Phil Villarreal originally appeared on kgun9.com. 2639

Calls are growing to defund the police. For some advocates, that means divesting from law enforcement in favor of supporting communities. Others want to dissolve departments entirely. Both ideas center on reimagining policing as we know it.“I definitely think there are partnerships to be made and there's opportunity to be had, but that reimagining really first comes with having the resources to dream,” said Isaac Bryan, Executive Director of the UCLA Black Policy Project. “Right now, we don't have that because over half of our budgets, the discretionary funds go to law enforcement and policing.”Bryan says he'd like to see more discussions about restorative or transformative justice and alternatives to incarceration.Bryan says Minneapolis has opened the door for these conversations. The city council there is actively working to disband police, despite pushback from the mayor. An advocacy organization gives us a better idea of what that might look like.MPD150 says first responders should be mental health providers, social workers and other community members. It argues law and order would be better served through education and services that low-income communities typically lack. That's something Bryan agrees with, pointing to the high arrest rates of those experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles.“We're using our resources the wrong way and that's a clear-cut example that I think folks in this city and in large municipalities can think critically about,” said Bryan. “What if we used that money to build housing, or to feed folks, or to provide other pathways to opportunity.”Former vice president and current Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden says we don't need to cut funding but increase it. His campaign argues more spending is necessary to help improve law enforcement and community policing. 1832

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Four wild mice collected during routine monitoring in the Campo area have tested positive for hantavirus, county health officials say.The mice, that were collected in open space in Campo, included two California mice, one deer mouse, and one brush mouse. The mice brought the total number of rodents that have tested positive for the virus so far this year around the county to 22.Health officials say people are unlikely to be exposed to the virus because rodents generally want to live and nest away from people. The county is also reminding residents that they should never sweep or vacuum up after rodents if they find them living in spaces like homes, sheds, or garages. Instead, people are encouraged to use “wet-cleaning” methods.People are exposed to hantavirus when the urine, feces, and saliva dries and is stirred into the air and inhaled. There is no cure or vaccine for the virus and it is potentially deadly, the county says.See tips from the county below on how to use wet-cleaning methods:Avoid Exposure to Hantavirus· Seal up all external holes in homes, garages and sheds larger than a dime to keep rodents from getting in.· Eliminate rodent infestations immediately.· Avoid rodent-infested areas and do not stir up dust or materials that may be contaminated with rodent droppings and urine.· Clean up rodent droppings and urine using the wet cleaning method described below.Use “Wet-cleaning” Methods to Prevent Inhaling the Virus· Do not sweep or vacuum infested areas.· Ventilate affected area by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes.· Use rubber gloves. Spray a 10 percent bleach solution or other disinfectants onto dead rodents, rodent droppings, nests, contaminated traps, and surrounding areas and let the disinfectant stand for at least 15 minutes before cleaning.· Clean with a sponge or a mop that has been soaked in disinfectant.· Place disinfected rodents and debris into two plastic bags, seal them and discard in the trash.· Wash gloves in a bleach solution, then soap and water, and dispose of them using the same double-bag method.· Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. 2157

CHICAGO, Ill. — Earlier this month, the March of Dimes reported that the pre-term birthrate in the U.S. increased by more than 10% for the fifth year in a row. For parents of premature babies, it’s an emotional journey filled with anxiety and helplessness. Two years ago, little Bryce Harshfield came into the world.“He is a miracle baby,” said his mother Dana Harshfield.Born at 24-weeks, Bryce weighed just 1 pound 5 ounces.“He was so tiny and, you know, in those first initial days, they have to prepare you for the worst,” she said.He was about 12 inches long and fragile.“I couldn't hold Bryce for 11 days,” said Dana. “And that was the hard part.”“The doctors and the nurses are amazing but sometimes things were just out of anybody's control,” said Bryce's father, Vancouver Harshfield. It was a precarious time. For five months, nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit had to mimic for Bryce being in the womb. Lindsay Rudy, a child life specialist at Chicago’s Rush University Children's Hospital says that meant keeping the lights down low and minimizing stimulation.“So, we tell our parents how to interact and what to do and don't touch them too much,” said Rudy. One thing the Harshfields could do was read.“It helps promote brain development, helps them get acclimated with our voices,” said Dana. “It helps you as a parent when you feel like you can do nothing.”Now, the Harshfields are collecting books, a lot of books, for their NICU. It’s a way to help other parents and premature babies. The book drop-offs have also become mini reunions. Bryce’s nurses have gotten to see the tiny baby they helped grow into a little boy. It’s a gift in Bryce’s name.“We're hoping that with the NICU families, that they'll take away having that memory that lasts a lifetime and cherishing those moments and reading those books,” said Dana.Next up is a foundation – a way to bring books to NICU’s across the country. Large donations are already coming in.It’s a holiday mission during a global pandemic that says Dana they are intent on fulfilling.“The littlest bit makes the biggest difference. And one person can make a difference.” 2142
