SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ahead of the Halloween weekend, San Diego State University is issuing a stay-at-home advisory for all students.The college said following the CDC's discouragement from participating in Halloween or social events where physical distancing cannot be done, as well as San Diego County's recommendation to avoid similar gatherings, a temporary advisory for students will go into effect from Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 a.m.Under the advisory, students are encouraged to stay home unless for an essential need.The university says it will continue to enforce the campus' COVID-19 policies against large gatherings off-campus, including recent reports of social events in the College Area that have drawn dozens of students together without physical distancing or mask wearing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After losing her husband and her son to a rare form of cancer, a local mom is doing her part to bring awareness to the disease. She teamed up with her family’s medical care team to come up with a step challenge.“I’m a mother on a mission to find and fund a cure for this disease,” says Debra Melikian.She lost her son Merak in February. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, also known as GIST.“He was so strong, he was so brave and determined to live life on his own terms,” says Melikian. “Merak never let cancer define him.”Melikian says the cancer is hereditary. She lost her husband to the cancer months prior.“I have lost my entire immediate family in a mere two-plus years. I do not want any other family to have to go through the despair and destruction that this cancer brings.”When not tending to patients, the care team at UCSD, who treated Merak and his father, would often participate in fun challenges, like Tough Mudder. Nurse Maura Caffrey says after Merak’s death, they wanted to do something to honor him and bring awareness to GIST.The team came up with a step challenge.“Whether you do Zumba, yoga, or hiking, you can do any type of activity,” says Caffrey. “It’s sort of a movement challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman says her ,000 custom road bike was stolen from her driveway last weekend while she was getting ready to go for a ride.Josie Fouts is a cyclist who recently competed with Team USA at the Para Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru.Due to the amputation of her left hand at birth, her bike requires custom elements including a modified handle and special braking mechanism.The frame is black and blue Fuji Supreme.Fouts said she had left the bike on her driveway on Saturday, Sept. 14 while she was getting ready to go on a ride. She had gone inside to put on her shoes but when she came back the bike was gone.“I heard the back wheel click.” Fouts remembered thinking, “I thought it was my friends coming to see me.”It wasn’t.Anyone with information about the bike is urged to call the Adams Avenue Bike Shop at 619-295-8500. 855

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A water main break Monday forced San Diego firefighters to evacuate Point Loma neighbors due to a potential hillside collapse.The break happened about 2:30 p.m. on Larga Circle near Leland St. The residential area is just west of the Vons shopping center on Midway Drive.According to SDFD, 10 homes were evacuated due to the break. The broken water main is on a slope between homes at the top and bottom of the slope. At least one home had flooding to the garage.City engineers are being called to the scene. 545

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Scripps Ranch woman who contacted Team 10 about problems with her Samsung refrigerator is now receiving a full refund after Team 10’s story aired.Stephanie Nivinskus bought her Samsung french door refrigerator in December 2014. It cost her nearly ,000. She said she had issues roughly six months after she bought it. "It's been a headache since the beginning," Nivinskus told Team 10 in September.The first problem was the ice maker does not function properly, according to Nivinskus."The ice just gathers and collects up there. It makes it so it doesn't work," Nivinskus said.She also has issues with the temperature of the refrigerator. The FDA says a safe temperature inside a refrigerator is 40 degrees or below. During the initial interview with Team 10, the thermometer inside of Nivinskus' refrigerator read about 56 degrees."Having spoiled food is a real problem," she said.
