Senate Republicans have reportedly drafted a new version of a potential coronavirus stimulus package — but it's unlikely that the bill will be considered for at least a few weeks.CNN and The New York Times reports that Republican Senators are discussing a stimulus package that would include extended federal unemployment benefits, cash for schools and even billion in funding for the post office.ABC News reports that the bill's total cost would be about 0 billion. In terms of unemployment benefits, Republicans' proposed legislation would reportedly offer 0 a week — about half of the 0 benefits the federal government paid out between March and July.Democrats have said they would like the 0 weekly benefits to be extended through the end of the year and expanded to self-employed workers and gig workers. When the 0 CARES Act unemployment benefits expired in July, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to resume benefits at 0 a week, with the requirement that states pay a portion of those benefits. The order will likely remain in legal limbo for some time. The New York Times reports that the Republicans' new stimulus package includes billion in funding to USPS ahead of the 2020 election. With COVID-19 still spreading throughout the country, election officials are expecting a huge increase in voting by mail. Trump, a staunch opponent of universal voting by mail, has previously said he hoped to slow funding to USPS in order to prevent expanding mail-in voting in November. On Tuesday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said that the USPS would not institute operational changes that workers said would slow mail delivery until after the election.According to CNN, Republicans are also proposing about 0 billion in funding to schools and another round of funding to the Paycheck Protection Program — a federal program that provides COVID-19 funding to small businesses.Earlier this month, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell dismissed lawmakers for their annual summer break. He has not indicated if he would call the Senate back into session prior to early September when it's scheduled to reconvene. 2158

Seven children have died as a result of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, New Jersey. The Wanaque facility has been "instructed not to admit any new patients until the outbreak ends and they are in full compliance," according to the health department. The timing of the deaths is not clear. The health department was notified of respiratory illness at the center on October 9 and Wanaque sent parents of children at the facility letters about the infection on October 19 according to Nicole Kirgan at the New Jersey Department of Health. On Tuesday the New Jersey Department of Health announced the death of six pediatric residents at the center and the infection of 12 additional residents. Wednesday the department announced an additional pediatric death. The New Jersey Department of Health said it's an ongoing outbreak investigation and workers were at the facility Tuesday. A team at the facility on Sunday found minor handwashing deficiencies. "The Department continues to work very closely with the facility to ensure that all infection control measures are being followed," the Wanaque facility said in a statement Wednesday. The exact ages of the children are not being released to protect patient privacy, Nicole Kirgan, a spokeswoman for the department of health said, adding that the age ranges for the deceased children was "from a toddler through young adults - but most are under 18."Adenoviruses can cause mild to severe illness, though serious illness is less common. People with weakened immune systems or existing respiratory or cardiac disease are at higher risk of developing severe illness from an adenovirus infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This outbreak, caused by adenovirus type 7, "is affecting medically fragile children with severely compromised immune systems. The strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living arrangements and can be more severe," according to the health department statement. In a statement Tuesday, the facility said it "promptly notified all appropriate government agencies when the virus was initially identified.""The Wanaque Center continues to fully cooperate with these agencies and has sought out their medical guidance with respect to the virus," the facility said. "As a result, facility staff have diligently implemented all available infection control and prevention measures in order to protect the health and safety of the Wanaque Center's residents."Nurses at the facility had previously reported a shortage of nursing staff and supplies, according to a statement from the union that represents the nursing staff which was posted online Tuesday. The Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) said the shortages may have led to "poor infection control practices."The union said it represents the 70 nurses that work at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. In a review by the government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services the Wanaque Center was awarded an above average ranking in overall quality but was given a below average health inspection rating. Based on an inspection conducted in August, CMS reported that "it was determined that the facility failed to provide a clean and homelike physical environment for their residents. " 3335

Since the beginning of the year, wildfires have burned over 3.2 million acres in California. Since August 15, when California’s fire activity elevated, there have been 25 fatalities and over 4,200 structures destroyed. In August, three of California’s four largest wildfires on record sparked. Currently, the largest, the August Complex fire burning east of Chico, stands at 803,489 acres.“We’re living in a world with greater wildfire risk from one-degree warming. Two degrees of warming will intensify those risks,” said Dr. Noah Diffenbaugh, professor of Earth System Science at Stanford University.Dr. Diffenbaugh says in the last 40 years there has been a tenfold increase in the amount of land burned by wildfires, and that number directly correlates to Earth’s warming from climate change. He says the science is pretty straightforward. As temperature rises fuels dry out more easily, which makes less-prone areas spark plugs for fires. Then add in the changes in humidity, wind speeds, and long-term weather patterns that are all affected by climate change and wildfires become larger, stronger, and more frequent.Seventeen of California’s 20 largest fires in history all started after the year 2000.“Very careful, objective, hypothesis-driven research has shown that about half of that increase in the area burned in the western United States is attributable to the long-term warming,” said Dr. Diffenbaugh. The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions says between 1984 and 2015, the number of large wildfires doubled in the western United States. It also estimates that for every one-degree rise in Earth’s temperature, the average area burned from a wildfire could increase by 600 percent in some places.“We have two of the three largest wildfires in California’s history burning right now so it is a simple fact,” said Dr. Diffenbaugh. The increase in fire activity also increases the strain put on resources.Recently, national fire managers raised the United State’s fire preparedness level to five, which is its highest level, making all fire-trained federal employees available for assignment. 2112
