SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men convicted of leading a home-invasion robbery spree with five other people were sentenced to prison terms Friday.A judge sentenced 26-year-old Thomas James Smith to 85 years plus 50 years to life in prison and 22-year-old Aaron Rico III to 35 years plus 25 years to life in prison for their roles the series of violent break-ins.Smith and Rico were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault in June. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Two U.S. Army Special Operations soldiers were killed and three others were injured during an aircraft incident, a U.S. Army official confirmed.The incident happened around 7 p.m. Thursday evening during what was described by a U.S. Army Special Operations Command public affairs officer as “routine training.”Department of Defense officials confirmed a Blackhawk helicopter crashed on or near San Clemente Island. An Army Public Affairs Officer sent ABC 10News a statement reading: “An element of U.S. Army Special Operations Command was conducting routine training in the vicinity of Coronado, California, on August 27, when an aircraft incident occurred. Two Soldiers were killed and three were injured. The area has been secured and an investigation into the incident is underway. More information will be released 24-hours following next of kin notification. Our sincere condolences go out the families and friends of the deceased. We thank you for not contacting them during this difficult time.”ABC 10News learned the soldiers were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital following the incident.Brian MacPherson saw the helicopters land at the hospital, "I knew something was really really wrong ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made an unpublicized visit to a Poway Unified School District campus on Thursday. DeVos spent about two hours at the Design 39 campus in 4S Ranch, speaking to administrators, teachers, and students. "The questions she was asking kids was, 'Really, tell me about your learning, and what do you really enjoy about learning here? How has this helped you as a learner?'" said Megan Power, a teacher at the school and former Education Department fellow who helped arrange for the visit. DeVos is a polarizing figure in the Trump administration, partially for her stance on school choice. Opponents accuse her of wanting to pull money out of public schools to pay for private education.Poway Unified Superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps posted pictures on Facebook after the visit. Some parents blasted the district for even hosting her. One woman said if she had known she would have protested outside. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While San Diego's Big Bay Boom and other popular fireworks shows are canceled this year, there are a handful of drive-in style events happening this weekend.In Vista, Poway, El Cajon, and Santee, fireworks displays are being hosted with social distancing in mind. Some of the shows require a ticket purchase to get prime viewing in a physical distancing atmosphere, or viewers can find street parking where allowed.Those who live nearby only need to look out their window!Fireworks displays have been canceled throughout much of California to limit gatherings and curb the spread of COVID-19. At any shows still being held, officials urge viewers to wear facial coverings and social distance around non-household members. Consumer fireworks are illegal in San Diego County and anyone caught using them could face fines or jail time.North CountyVista: Fireworks will be hosted at Brengle Terrace Park starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
