SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who ambushed a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop at knifepoint, tried to sexually assault her and stole her SUV, was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison.Christopher Merron, 28, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.The attack occurred around 4:30 a.m. last Oct. 14 as the victim was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street. Merron pushed the woman into a back room, took her car keys and threatened her with a knife, according to police and prosecutors.Following a struggle, she was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. Jason Weeden.The assailant fled in the woman's 1998 GMC Jimmy. Merron was arrested in Mission Valley the next day and the victim's SUV was recovered, Weeden said.Merron pleaded guilty in January to assault with intent to commit a sex offense, robbery and sexual battery charges and admitted a knife-use sentencing enhancement allegation. Jonathan Currier, with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego's North County, was reported overboard at 9:40 a.m. Thursday while the USS Essex was conducting routine operations in the Sulu Sea.Currier was declared dead on Aug. 17, 13th MEU Capt. Diann Rosenfield said. "Our hearts go out to the Currier family," said Col. Chandler Nelms, commanding officer, 13th MEU. "Cpl. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Among the thousands of UC San Diego students moving into campus housing for the fall quarter, 10 have tested positive for COVID-19 and been moved into temporary isolation lodging, campus officials reported Wednesday.In the same two-week round of coronavirus testing, more than 5,700 students came up negative, according to the La Jolla-area university.The resulting infection rate of 0.17%, was "less than anticipated" and below San Diego's overall rate, UCSD officials advised.During the process, UC San Diego's lab averaged 1,500 coronavirus tests daily for two weeks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - CVS Health announced Thursday it is expanding its COVID- 19 no-cost testing program by adding 35 more test sites at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thrus across California, including three locations in San Diego County, amid a surge in new coronavirus cases.The opening of additional test sites on Friday adds to the 107 locations previously opened statewide, including 14 in San Diego County.The nearly 200 additional test sites opening across the country this week are among the more than 1,400 locations CVS Health has opened since May and expand the company's testing capacity to more than 1.5 million tests per month, subject to availability of supplies and lab capacity, according to President and CEO Larry J. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Tuesday for help finding an assailant who fatally stabbed a 31-year-old man in the Ridgeview-Webster neighborhood just over three months ago.Officers responding to a report of an assault shortly before 10:30 p.m. on June 25 found Leah Capaal Worley suffering from stab wounds to his upper body at Charles Lewis III Memorial Park in the 4300 block of Home Avenue, according to San Diego police.Paramedics took Worley to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.RELATED: Man dies after being found with stab wounds in Webster areaInvestigators determined the stabbing happened in 4600 block Home Avenue and that Worley drove himself to the location where he was found by officers, police said.Investigators have not disclosed a detailed description of the assailant, who was wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket at the time of the slaying.Anyone with information about the slaying was asked to call the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
