As students from across the country prepare to return to classrooms in the middle of a pandemic, a nationwide school nurse shortage has health experts concerned about how well some districts will be able to handle potential outbreaks of COVID-19.Linda Mendonca oversees the National Association of School Nurses. As she thinks about empty classrooms beginning to fill back up with students, she can’t help but be filled with anxiety.“We don’t have a road map for all of this, so when you don’t have a road map, that makes it a little more challenging,” she said.School nurses will be playing a critical role in the reopening of schools. They’re being asked to monitor kids for COVID-19 symptoms and even keep track of absentee rates to spot potential trends. In some cases, school nurses will help local health departments with contact tracing if an outbreak occurs at a school.But a nationwide nurse school nurse shortage puts a lot of that in jeopardy.“In the midst of a pandemic, there should be a nurse in every school, and there’s not,” Mendonca explained.About 25 percent of the nation’s schools will start this year without a school nurse. It’s a startling statistic that has public health officials particularly concerned, in the middle of a pandemic.The average school nurse makes about ,000. There’s also a simple funding problem. School nurses are often the first to get cut when districts need to eliminate positions. The need is so great, that the National Association of School Nurses is advocating for 10,000 new nurses in the next federal stimulus bill.“The school nurse is so important that there needs to be a full-time nurse in school every day at all schools,” said Jenny Gormley, who’s served as a school nurse in Massachusetts for years.Gormley’s hope is that in the face of this pandemic, districts across the country will find ways to support nurses with both PPE and funding.“We all want students back learning, but we want to do it safely,” she added.As parents attempt to send their kids safely back to school, school nurses could be one of the best prescriptions for success. 2114

As the NFL continues to operate surrounded by an inferno of coronavirus cases throughout the US, the league told players to wear face coverings when not actively in the game, ESPN reported on Monday.The new requirements go into effect starting with Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day slate of games.According to ESPN’s report, the NFL is requiring masks to be worn unless a player has their helmet on and is in and or about to enter the game.The league is also telling coaches that face shields alone are no longer adequate, and face coverings or double-layer gaiters must be worn during games.The NFL is limiting the number of players on the travel roster to 62. The league is reducing the number of members of the media who can cover team practices.The NFL releases weekly figures of COVID-19 cases. The league tested a total of 7,856 tests to players and staff. Last week, there were 17 new COVID-19 cases reported among players, and 35 among coaches and staff. BALTIMORE — It's not just the news of a Free Little Library being vandalized that is turning heads in a Baltimore community. The narration of the crime itself is worth its weight in laughter."I thought it was hilarious when I sped it up and cut it," said Jacqui Cummings. "I said to myself, 'you don't need to fight over it, just make a joke of it.'"The initial vandalism happened on November 7th around 8 p.m. outside Notre Maison Connects. The non-profit focuses on empowering youth while supporting families and strengthening communities.Cummings is the founder of the organization. She said when she first saw the damage, she shed a tear."I did because I do a lot of work myself," she said.Cummings is no stranger to hands-on-work. Not only did she do metal-work to create the Free Little Library, she's experienced in hard labor, helping build day-care centers in other countries."I love giving back and educating," she said.In light of the vandalism Cummings launched a community book drive. Authorities say a U.S. Navy training plane traveling from Florida has crashed in an Alabama residential neighborhood near the Gulf Coast, killing both people in the plane. Navy spokesman Zach Harrell says both people in the T-6B Texan II training plane died Friday. No injuries were reported on the ground. Foley Fire Chief Joey Darby told news outlets that responders encountered and extinguished a “large volume of fire” that had engulfed a home and cars. The crash occurred near the city of Foley and the town of Magnolia Springs.
