SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Parks Service will survey San Diego's Chicano Park and its murals as part of efforts to add the land to the national list.The reconnaissance survey is expected to be completed next year and will evaluate the significance of the park and its artwork.The NPS announcement comes after Rep. Juan Vargas introduced a bill in 2019, The Chicano Park Preservation Act, that would require the Department of Interior to conduct a study of the park's merits for national affiliation.RELATED: Bill pushes to add San Diego's Chicano Park to National Park SystemVargas said in a release Wednesday that the NPS is willing to conduct the study without passing a bill requiring the department to do so."I’m very pleased to learn that the National Park Service will begin their preliminary assessment of Chicano Park early next year. The National Park Service affiliation will help protect the park’s longevity and legacy," said Vargas.Being affiliated with the NPS would allow the park to be eligible for technical or financial aid. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a California Firefighter is hoping for his safe return after authorities in Mexico arrested two people linked to the case.Authorities announced on Friday that they had arrested a couple linked to the case. The couple has been identified as 32-year-old Fanny N. and 27-year-old Santos N.They say the couple had bank cards with Aguilar's name on them, and the cards were used at businesses in Ensenada, Rosarito, and Tijuana. The arrest was made Thursday.Aguilar disappeared in August when we went to his second home in Baja California.According to Mexican authorities, Aguilar had arranged to meet with one of the suspects at a Rosarito address. They believe it could have been a set up to kidnap him. Aguilar tried to escape.Authorities say neighbors heard gunshots and investigators found bloodstains in the area, but they have not been able to locate Aguilar.Aguilar's cousin in San Diego county, Nancy, says she is hopeful that her cousin will be found."I have faith that he's out there alive, and we are going to find him," she said.Authorities are questioning the suspects for leads. 1129

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The city of San Diego may turn to homeowners to help chip away at the housing crisis.On Wednesday, the San Diego Housing Commission floated the idea of offering loans to homeowners in the city to build backyard granny flats to be rented out as affordable housing. The plan could help homeowners pay their mortgage while also providing more low-income units to those who qualify. Councilmembers on the committee appeared to be in support of the idea.
