CANBERRA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An anti-China rant by an editor on Australia's biggest-selling national newspaper has come under fire from netizens around the world.     Greg Sheridan, an editor of The Australian, flattered Rebiya Kadeer -- leader of the separatist World Uygur Congress -- for her "courage" to confront the Chinese government in an article published Wednesday.     In his article, titled "Uygurs must fight for rights within China," Sheridan said Rebiya should leave aside her campaign for a separate state for a while and "concentrate instead on human rights, cultural autonomy and democracy," so as to win support and aid from Western nations.     He lauded Rebiya's week-long visit to Australia, saying it would "change the course of Chinese politics."     However, responding to Sheridan's instruction to the self-appointed Uygur leader, many netizens expressed their disagreement with his absurdities and scoffed at his ignorance and crankiness.     "Has anyone worked out of these facts about Kadeer? BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to strengthen international judicial cooperation with other countries, including the United States, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Justice said.     The unnamed spokesperson made the statement while commenting on the case of two former Bank of China (BOC) managers in southern Guangdong Province, who were convicted in a U.S. court last year of embezzlement and money laundering, the Legal Daily reported Friday.     "China welcomed the verdict by the U.S. court," which sentenced Xu Chaofan and Xu Guojun, two former managers of the BOC Guangdong Kaiping Branch, and their wives, to prison terms of eight to 25 years, the spokesperson said.     Xu Chaofan was sentenced to 25 years in jail and Xu Guojun to 22 years. Their wives were each sentenced to eight years in prison. All four were further sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay 482 million U.S. dollars in restitution.     The four were found guilty of a racketeering conspiracy that began in 1991 and continued until October 2004.     Prosecutors said the defendants laundered stolen money through Hong Kong, Canada and the U.S., including 3 million U.S. dollars deposited at several Las Vegas casinos.     The case was one of the biggest of its kind since the founding of New China in 1949.     It has, however, reinforced the positive development of Sino-U.S. judicial cooperation and provided experience in dealing with organized economic crime.     "Fleeing suspects are doomed to be punished by law," said the spokesperson.     International judicial cooperation, an effective way of fighting crime, would contribute to the crackdown on trans-national crimes, he said.     Professor Huang Feng of the Beijing Normal University's Criminal Law Research Institute said Xu's sentencing in the U.S. provided "an alternative to extradition" as the two countries had not signed an extradition treaty.     Fleeing suspects could still be convicted abroad, though they currently could not be repatriated, Huang said.     Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in May the two guilty couples should be repatriated or extradited to China as soon as possible.

MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR) Legislative Election General Auditing Committee announced the official results of the election of the fourth Legislative Assembly of Macao on Tuesday night.     In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 29 seats including 12 directly-elected seats, 10 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     A total of 122 candidates from 16 groups contested in the direct elections, while the indirect elections did not take place since only 10 candidates have been fielded by the four constituencies involved for the 10 seats.     Eight of the 12 candidates who won the direct elections were veteran lawmakers that have served their terms in the legislature, which includes Kwan Tsui Hang, Chan Meng Kam, Ng Kuok Cheong, Angela Leong On Kei, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, Lee Chong Cheng, Ung Choi Kun, and Au Kam San were the winners of the direct elections, while Ho Ion Sang, Mak Soi Kun, Chan Wai Chi and Melinda Chan Mei Yi become the new faces in the legislature.     For the part of indirect elections, the list of winners comprises Ho Iat Seng, Kou Hoi In, Fong Chi Keong, and Cheang Chi Keong of the industrial, commercial and financial sector; Lau Cheok Va, Lam Heong Sang of labor sector; Chui Sai Cheong and Leonel Alberto Alves of professional sector; Vitor Cheung Lup Kwan and Chan Chak Mo of social, cultural, educational and sports sector.     The election of the fourth term of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR officially started Sunday morning. The authorities delayed announcing the results of the legislative election because6,539 ballots were found to be spoiled, the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs committee said Monday.     Some 149,006 of the total 249,886 registered voters cast their ballots during the polling period, but 6,539 of these ballots were deemed as invalid, according to the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs Committee.     This year's voter turnout stood at 59.9 percent, compared with 58.39 percent in the previous legislative election in 2005.     The results of the legislative election still need to be submitted to the SAR's Court for final approval, and the confirmed results will be published on the SAR's Official Gazette on Sept. 30 at the latest.
