BALTIMORE — On a cold day in February, Evelyn Businsky was on her couch when the sliding glass door behind her spontaneously shattered."I was glad that the curtain was closed because it just burst out," Businsky said. The inside pane of the door shattered into a thousand little pieces on her living room floor. Her and her husband immediately called the remodeling company that installed the windows and doors about 20 years ago. They chose Homefix Custom Remodeling for their lifetime warranty. An estimator came out the next day but the Businskys say they were unable to get an answer on when the door would be replaced and how much it would cost. The company eventually called the couple to let them know they were going to replace the door at no cost.As for why or how the door shattered, the Businskys figured it was the combination of the polar vortex and the hot air coming from their space heater. However, Mike Geraci, director of marking and business development at Caplan Glass in Baltimore, isn't convinced that's what caused the glass to give out."I doubt very seriously because of the cold weather and heater, looks like five or six feet away, that it caused that door to explode," Gerarci said.He said it could've been stress, potentially some temperature imbalance or the materials inside the glass."One of the ingredients in float glass is nickel alloy, and if there's a large concentration of that particular ingredient in the glass, that could cause the glass to fracture or split," Geraci said.However, this is rare and uncommon."Very rare for that to happen. There's thousands and thousands of tempered glass being produced every hour," Geraci said.And yet, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission received nearly 30 reports in the last six months of shower doors, TV stands, casserole dishes and glass appliances exploding out of nowhere."There's a process called heat soaking where they take the glass, they heat it up and then they put it right into warm water and in that bath any kind of informality in the glass should make it explode in water to prevent it from happening after purchase but it's hard to say. California has become the first US state to ban the sale of animal fur products.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Friday that will make it illegal to sell, donate or manufacture new fur products in the state.The bill, authored by state assemblymaker Laura Friedman, applies to all new clothing, handbags, shoes and other items made with fur. Those who violate the law would be subject to civil penalties.Used fur and taxidermy products are exempt from the ban, along with leather, cowhide and shearling. BOSTON, Mass. – Everyone is on a journey, physically and mentally, according to 45-year-old Justice Williams. “We are like caterpillars in a cocoon becoming butterflies,” Williams said. “Everyone is in a constant battle over what our journey is with fitness and wellness.” Williams is a personal trainer, and even a life coach, who teaches his clients about fitness through the art of kettlebell training.Williams trains his clients and creates confidence with them. He also runs “Queer Gym,” one of a few workout spaces for the LGBTQ communities that’s made its wave throughout North America in recent years.Williams started the pop-up gym just outside of Boston, because of his own journey.“It’s a place people can work out in the LGBTQ community if they don’t feel comfortable in regular gyms,” Williams said. “Gym culture is so hyper-masculine. And during my journey, it was hard to be in those gyms.”Motivating people and building confidence is why Williams became a personal trainer. Williams is transgender. Ten years ago, Williams needed to lose weight before taking testosterone, but couldn’t find a personal trainer who understood the journey he was on. “I didn’t have a trainer,” Williams said. “I did things on my own, I taught myself. I learned more about how to be in my body, and how to mentally connect with my body differently. Even though I felt like it didn’t fit.”Williams said he never knew he could identify as transgender until he moved to Boston in his thirties. He said he went through some depression. But by using fitness and getting healthy, he was able to treat that.“I got used to being overweight and depressed and just being who I was,” Williams said. “There’s so many systems of oppression. The visual you get is that you’re almost digging your own grave with how oppression treats you. In my cocoon I basically had to understand loving my body regardless of what the world tells me -- it will ensure my health.”Williams hopes to bring that type of empowerment to clients like him. Not only through his training, but through Queer Gym.“I utilize this space to not only give information, but to create love,” Williams said. “I hope to create a space that is toxin free. I’m supporting these bodies to build an armor so they can go in other spaces and be their whole selves and make that normal. We are a cocoon and a community…and we make that crazy just a little bit better and that’s what I want to do. Because that helps that butterfly really fly.” 2495
