UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (Xinhua) -- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first human space flight, accomplished on April 12, 1961 by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the Russian Federal Space Agency and the ITAR-TASS information agency organized an exhibition which was opened here on Thursday."The first human space flight is not one of the most significant events of the past century, but of human history in general," Vitaly Churkin, the Russian permanent representative to the UN, said at the opening ceremony."It's a symbol of courage, thirst for knowledge, and progress," Churkin said.The exhibition contained archival photos telling the story of the first human space flight and of those who made it possible, and historic pictures of Gagarin.As part of the celebration of human space flight's 50th anniversary the UN Postal Administration designed postal stamps which will be issued on April 12, to tell the story of progress that humankind has made beyond earth's boundaries, as Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information put it."Fifty years have passed since that amazing voyage, but the legend of Gagarin's courage and journey to the 'final frontier' continues to be a source of inspiration for space exploration for peoples and nations around the world," Akasaka said at the opening of the exhibition.According to Akasaka, the exhibition "sparks people's imagination about what is possible through the peaceful use and exploration of outer space."Other attendees included Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov.Gagarin, also known as the Columbus of the Cosmos, traveled into outer space on the height of the Cold War when the Berlin Wall was built, at a moment when it was hardly impossible to imagine that more than 15 nations would work together in humanity' s permanent space outpost -- the International Space Station.The Russian icon of space spoke the historic words "the earth is blue, how wonderful. It is amazing."On Thursday the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight.

CHIAYI, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, the Chinese mainland chief negotiator with Taiwan, discussed cooperation prospects on Friday with fishermen and farmers in Chiayi in southern Taiwan.Chen, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), led a 50-member delegation and spoke at a seminar attended by more than 70 business people from both the mainland and Taiwan.He said small and medium-sized enterprises on both sides "played an important role in cross-Strait economic development, employment and in maintaining social stability.""Small- and medium-sized businesses are an important part of cross-Strait economic exchanges," he said, adding that among the more than 80,000 Taiwanese enterprises investing on the mainland, over 50 percent are small and medium-sized companies.Chen said that efforts should be made to enhance cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises on the mainland and those in central and southern Taiwan.The mainland delegation arrived in Chiayi from Kaohsiung after investigating the investment environment with local business leaders. They arrived in Taipei on Wednesday at the invitation of Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). Both the SEF and the ARATS are authorized by the two sides to handle cross-Strait affairs.Chen said that since 2005, the mainland bought a large amount of farm and fishing products from Taiwan, which greatly boosted sales of Taiwanese products."Many renowned mainland distribution firms are present here at the seminar to seek cooperation opportunities with Taiwan's farmers and fishermen so that the sale of Taiwanese products on the mainland could increase steadily," he said.Chiang said the farming and fishing industries were the most important sectors in southern Taiwan.He added that the tax-reduction plan of the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement's (ECFA) "early harvest" program, which took effect on January 1, covered 13 categories for farming products and five categories for fishing goods. Chiang said the plan was an opportunity for the industry to expand its exports to the mainland.He noted that the "early harvest" program's duty exemption also covered sectors like textiles, machinery components, and "all related to small- and medium-sized enterprises."Chiang said Friday's seminar was meant to promote cooperation between smaller businesses across the Strait, to deepen the effect of the ECFA to benefit both sides.The mainland delegation will continue its trip in southern Taiwan and return to Taipei late Saturday. BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities issued an order on Friday to crack down on various election irregularities prior to the upcoming election of a new term of party committees, people's congresses, governments and political consultative conferences at provincial, city, county and township levels.The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China Central Commission jointly issued the order to guarantee an honest and orderly election.The order says election irregularities, such as winning votes through pulling strings with voters, or bribing key officials who have a say on one's promotion, or manipulating votes by means of threat or deceit, are strictly frobidden.The order also prohibits officials from favoring candidates who are family members or friends, or disclosing election-related information which might alter the results of elections.China holds local elections for party committees, people's congresses, governments and political consultative conferences every five years.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft announced on Tuesday that its Bing search engine will become the default search and mapping application on Blackberry phones.Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer announced the partnership with Research in Motion (RIM), which makes Blackberry phones, at the Blackberry World Conference in Orlando, Florida, according to a Microsoft blog post.Ballmer said Microsoft would invest uniquely in the Blackberry platform in addition to its own Windows Phone platform."Bing will be deeply integrated at the BlackBerry OS (operating system) level," Ballmer said.Central to the collaboration, Blackberry devices will use Bing as the preferred search provider in the browser, and Bing will be the default search and map application for new devices presented to mobile operators, both in the United States and internationally, said Microsoft's Bing team in the blog post.Meanwhile, Bing is also shipping as the default search experience and map application for the newly released Blackberry Playbook, a RIM tablet computer which made market debut on April 19.On Tuesday's Blackberry conference, Ballmer called Google's Android ecosystem "chaos" and the Apple iOS "limited" before he hailed Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sales revenue of Beijing's auto market in 2011 might shrink by 60 billion yuan (about 9.1 billion U.S. dollars) due to the city limiting the number of cars purchased each month, a commerce official said Saturday.Car sales revenue will drop to 100 billion yuan in 2011 from last year's 160 billion yuan, Wang Shuxia, chief for marketing section with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce, told a working meeting of the commission.A control on car purchases introduced this year limits new car license plates to 240,000 in 2011, said Wang.In 2010, more than 800,000 new cars drove onto Beijing's roads, worsening the chronic gridlock in this Chinese national capital of nearly 5 million automobiles.Wang estimated that Beijing's car sales this year will hit 580,000 units, as some cars will be sold to buyers outside of Beijing while others will be purchased by buyers who are replacing older cars.Car owners who replace their old vehicles can obtain car license plates directly without taking part in the lottery that allots 20,000 new plates each month.
