SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pride Month comes to a close, the San Diego Unified School District is working to make sure LGBTQ students feel supported year-round. The district's curriculum is becoming more inclusive. School can be a tough time for many students, including those who identify with the LGBTQIA community."In a 2017 report, a national study, 82% of our LGBTQ students reported hearing anti-LGBTQ remarks," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "Seven in 10 reported being called names or threatened during their school day."Gloria spearheaded Assembly Bill 493. It would mandate LGBTQ identity training for educators, grades 7-12. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law last fall.Although school is out for summer break, the San Diego Unified School District is showing its support. The Pride and Transgender flags, among others, were raised outside of the district's office.SDUSD has implemented a curriculum that will help teachers and students. Each module contains four lessons. It comes equipped with terminology and LGBTQIA history."What we found out as a district, is that these students are hearing about these issues and these people for the first time because a lot of our educators have been ill-prepared to have these discussions in classrooms," says Ebonee Weathers with the Youth Advocacy Dept.Weathers also notes that it's important for educators to build relationships and empower students, so they feel safe and comfortable in school settings. 1478

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California Highway Patrol is investigating after a man was shot while driving on Interstate 8 Saturday night. According to CHP, the shooting happened on I-8 near Waring Road around 8:30 p.m. CHP says an unknown vehicle began firing rounds at the victim. RELATED: Jury finds Chula Vista road rage suspect guilty of second-degree murderOnce on State Route 125, the suspect again started shooting at the man, striking him once in the arm. According to CHP, the suspect fled the scene in an unknown vehicle and has yet to be located. The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. He was later arrested after CHP determined that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California drivers will want to be aware of several new traffic laws, including stipulations around unattended kids in cars and moving over for emergency vehicles, that will be enforced in 2021.Assembly Bill 2717, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2021, will exempt a person from civil or criminal liability for trespassing or damaging a vehicle when rescuing a child 6 years old or younger who is in immediate danger from heat, cold, lack of ventilation, or another dangerous circumstance.California had already exempted good Samaritans from liability when rescuing an animal or pet in the same circumstances. Also starting Jan. 1, Assembly Bill 2285 extends penalties for not moving over or slowing down for emergency vehicles with flashing lights on freeways to local streets and roads. Emergency vehicles will also now include tow trucks and Caltrans vehicles, in addition to law enforcement and emergency vehicles.If a driver violates the "move over, slow down" law, CHP officers can issue a ticket.Assembly Bill 47, which was signed into law in 2019, will go into effect on July 1, 2021. The law makes the act of using a cell phone "in a handheld manner while driving" for a second time within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense punishable by a point being added to the driver's record. This applies to violations of talking or texting while driving, except when hands-free, and to any use of the devices while driving by a person under 18 years old. 1505

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chief Edward Gallagher has retired weeks after it was determined his rank would remain intact, an attorney confirmed. In late November, Gallagher and three other SEALs were notified that a board of peers would determine whether or not they should remain SEALs, the Associated Press reported. President Donald Trump then ordered the Navy to allow Gallagher to retire as a SEAL with his rank intact.
