DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - North San Diego County kids and teens had a challenging day on the beach Friday during the junior lifeguard competition in Del Mar.The Del Mar Junior Lifeguards hosted their counterparts from Solana Beach for a day of running, paddle and swim relays, and beach flag games."I definitely feel I grew as a person, I learned to be more selfless. We learned to kind of share respect to others no matter what, and I mean my teamwork just definitely got a lot better,” said 14-year-old James Goodwin, junior lifeguard of the year.Five hundred children ages 9 through 7 participated in the events."We are stressing sportsmanship and teamwork; we're stressing participation, having fun, trying your best. Only one person in each event is going to be first, so everyone needs to learn from what did they do, that they could do better to be the first person next time,” said Del Mar Junior Lifeguards director Turtle Randolph. 953

DAVIS, Calif. (AP) — A tornado touched down in a California field as weekend thunderstorms swept through the central part of the state, dropping rain and dime-sized hail, forecasters said.Cellphone video posted online showed a towering vortex spinning Saturday evening near Davis.National Weather Service forecaster Emily Heller told the San Francisco Chronicle that there was no damage. Tornadoes in the Central Valley aren't entirely unusual and are "weaker and more short-lived" than ones typically seen in the Midwest, she said.Saturday's storm blanketed some roadways with hail in and around Solano County. More stormy conditions were possible Sunday evening. To the east, forecasters issued a winter weather advisory after several inches of snow fell in the Sierra Nevada.Heller called it "the first real snow of the season."Elevations of 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) and above recorded up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of fresh powder on Saturday. More snow was forecast for Sunday into Monday and the highest mountain peaks could see up to 6 inches (15 centimeters). The severe weather is the result of a cold front over the Pacific Northwest that is spinning out waves of unstable air as it moves east, Heller told the newspaper. 1240

DeSantis’ mishandling of #COVID has made him a global laughingstock & caused so much needless suffering & death in our state. Now, beyond just deadly incompetence, it appears he has chosen to abuse Florida’s law enforcement and judicial systems to persecute Rebekah Jones, (1/4) https://t.co/pcqKXo1JZD— Rep. DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — An automated measuring system in California's Death Valley reported a temperature of 130 degrees amid a blistering heatwave on Sunday. The reading would be among the highest ever recorded globally if it is confirmed. The National Weather Service says the high was recorded at 3:41 p.m. at Furnace Creek near the park's visitor center. It's the same location where the world record high of 134 degrees was recorded in July 1913. That record, however, is disputed. The Washington Post reported that in 2016, an expert analysis determined that the 1913 reading was "essentially not possible from a meteorological perspective." The analysis found that the reading was inconsistent with temperature readings from nearby areas and that the weather observer at the time was "inexperienced."Per the climate data in xmACIS2, this is the first time since 1913 that Death Valley has reached 130F. In July 2013, it last reached 129F. If valid, it would be the hottest August temperature at the site by 3F. @NWSVegas pic.twitter.com/gZNBW4NXI4— NWS WPC (@NWSWPC) August 16, 2020The World Meteorological Organization says that if Sunday's temperature is confirmed, it would be the highest globally since 1931 when 131 degrees was reported in Tunisia. That is also disputed.California is currently in the midst of an intense heatwave that caused the state's power grid to overload over the weekend, resulting in a series of rolling blackouts. It's the first time in nearly 20 years that utility companies had to institute rolling blackouts due to an overload of the power grid.Energy usage in the state is expected to remain high as the heatwave continues. 1682
