CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a deadly crash in the South Bay early Sunday morning. According to police, the single-car crash happened on the 100 block of Telegraph Canyon Road just after 3:45 a.m. Chula Vista Police say a man was driving along the road when he veered to the left and struck two trees in the center median, causing major damage to the vehicle. RELATED: Fire breaks out inside San Diego shopping centerWhen officers arrived on scene, the vehicle was reportedly on fire with the man trapped inside. The driver was taken to the hospital with major injuries where he later died. According to police, the driver didn’t display any signs of being under the influence, but speed may have been a factor. 752

(KGTV) — Surveillance video caught the moment a driver caused a fiery chain-reaction crash in a South Bay neighborhood.Chula Vista Police said five cars were involved in the crash at East Paisley Street and Monserate Avenue just after 6 p.m. Thursday. Five people were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.The crash started when a black truck hit a car, sending that vehicle into a parked car. The suspect of the black truck kept driving, hitting another car parked in a driveway that was being worked on by two people, knocking them unconscious. That car was sent into a nearby RV, injuring another person.Video from a resident's surveillance camera showed the truck send one man flying and the car into a concrete pillar, as it overturns and explodes into flames."I opened the door, and there was the car, it was on fire," said resident Priscilla Ramirez. "I'm still shaking from everything."Smoke and flames filled Ramirez's yard."I couldn't see my house, smoke and fire, smoke and fire all over my yard, couldn't see anything," Ramirez's brother, Adrian, said. "[Both men] were slurring and they were scared."The two suspects in the truck fled the scene, before later turning themselves in and receiving treatment for injuries at a hospital.The two suspects were arrested, but 10News is working to confirm what charges were filed against the pair. Chula Vista Police said they were investigating if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident. 1488

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of parents from the Sweetwater Union High School district have started a petition hoping to push the district to allow their student-athletes to return to practice.As of Tuesday night, the petition has over 1,100 signatures. The parents want their children to follow all safety and social distancing guidelines, but they say the district has told them the kids can't practice. The petition gives examples of other school districts in San Diego County that have allowed their student athletes to return to practice. The petition even suggests that district officials are keeping sports shut down to balance Sweetwater's multi-million dollar budget deficit.Parents argue that not having sports is affecting their children's mental health and that not practicing could put them at a disadvantage once the seasons starts and when it comes time to get sports scholarships. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista’s Police Chief and a city councilman hosted a public safety meeting in a community where most would think safety isn’t an issue.  Chief Roxana Kennedy and Councilman John McCann met with several residents Wednesday night at the Montevalle Community Center.“I feel the balance is like this:  Housing, people, lights, traffic, less parking and police protection and presence are here,” said Chula Vista resident Dianne Farsetta while holding one hand up and one hand down. “It is a little scary.  We want to be in a safe environment.”Community groups on Facebook and Nextdoor appear to post more instances of crimes throughout the communities of Eastlake and Otay Ranch. Farsetta said the city is growing faster than its police force.However, Councilman McCann says the crime in his district is still less than half the crime level in other Chula Vista districts.  Additionally, McCann said Chula Vista is still one of the safest cities of its size in the country.  Nevertheless, McCann and Chief Kennedy listened to the community Wednesday night.“We want to make sure that we’re working with our police and our community to continue to make it as safe as it is,” he said.Farsetta and several others want to see more police on the streets and a police substation on the city’s eastern side.  Headquarters is on the western side of the city.McCann said the city’s immediate need is more officers on patrol.  He added he wants a substation but that the estimated million price tag is too much for Chula Vista. 1598

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A family and their pets forced out of their Chula Vista home after smoke started to fill the upper floor.Fire crews responded to the home on Montcalm Street around 2 a.m.Firefighters got there and looked for flames, but only found smoke in the attic due to a possible electrical issue.The fire department rendered the home uninhabitable due to tearing apart the walls and ceilings to find the fire.Everyone made it out safely, but an 87-year-old woman was treated with oxygen. 506
